BACKGROUND: The current global pandemic has created unprecedented challenges in the blood supply network. Given the recent shortages, there must be a civilian plan for massively bleeding patients when there are no blood products on the shelf. Recognizing that the time to death in bleeding patients is less than 2 h, timely resupply from unaffected locations is not possible. One solution is to transfuse emergency untested whole blood (EUWB), similar to the extensive military experience fine-tuned over the last 19 years. While this concept is anathema in current civilian transfusion practice, it

Residential roofers have the highest rate of falls in the construction sector with injuries and fatalities costing billions of dollars annually. The sloped roof surface is the most predominant component within the residential roof work environment. Postural stability on a sloped work environment is not well studied. Calculating inclination angles (IAs) using the lateral ankle marker could be a quality measure to determine how cross-slope roof walking will influence stability. Will cross-slope roof-walking effect anterior-posterior (AP) and medial-lateral (ML) IAs in adult males? Eleven adult m

This study aimed to clarify the psychological benefits of brief walks through forest areas. In addition, we aimed to examine the associations between psychological responses and trait anxiety levels. Five-hundred-and-eighty-five participants (mean age, 21.7 ± 1.6 years) were instructed to walk predetermined courses through forest (test) and city (control) areas for 15 min. The Profile of Mood State (POMS) questionnaire and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory were used to assess participants' psychological responses and trait anxiety levels, respectively. The results revealed that walking through for

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates biomechanical implications of walking with indigenous "Kolhapuri" footwear compared to barefoot walking among a population of South Indians.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten healthy adults from South India walked barefoot and indigenously shod at voluntary speed on an artificial substrate. The experiment was repeated outside, on a natural substrate. Data were collected from (1) a heel-mounted 3D-accelerometer recording peak impact at heel contact, (2) an ankle-mounted 3D-goniometer (plantar/dorsiflexion and inversion/eversion), and (3) sEMG electrodes at the m. t

Falls and fall-related injuries cause extremely costly and potentially fatal health problems in people post-stroke. However, there is no global indicator of walking instability for detecting which individuals will have increased risk of falls. The purposes of this study were to directly quantify walking stability in stroke survivors and neurologically intact controls and to determine which stability measures would reveal the changes in walking stability following stroke. This study thus provided an initial step to establish objective measures for identifying potential fallers. Nine post-stroke

BACKGROUND: Nurses on an adult surgical unit perceived a decrease in patients' mobility and an increase in postoperative complications, which led to an initiative to motivate patients to ambulate.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS: The questions addressed in this study refer to adult patients having surgery: Is there a relationship between ambulation and length of stay (LOS)? Did "walking the dog" affect how early and how many times they ambulated? Did "walking the dog" affect the incidence of postoperative complications?
METHODS: Photos of dogs were made available and patients were encouraged to "walk the

People with Parkinson's disease often have walking difficulty, and this is likely to be exacerbated while walking in places in the community, where people are likely to face greater and more varied challenges. This study aims to understand the facilitators and the barriers to walking in the community perceived by people with Parkinson's disease. This qualitative study involved 5 focus groups (n = 34) of people with Parkinson's disease and their partners residing in metropolitan and rural regions in Queensland, Australia. Results found that people with PD reported to use internal personal strat

To test if dreams contain remote or never-experienced motor skills, we collected during 6 weeks dream reports from 15 paraplegics and 15 healthy subjects. In 9/10 subjects with spinal cord injury and in 5/5 with congenital paraplegia, voluntary leg movements were reported during dream, including feelings of walking (46%), running (8.6%), dancing (8%), standing up (6.3%), bicycling (6.3%), and practicing sports (skiing, playing basketball, swimming). Paraplegia patients experienced walking dreams (38.2%) just as often as controls (28.7%). There was no correlation between the frequency of walkin

Gait dysfunction is an early problem identified by patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Alterations in gait may result in an increase in the energy cost of walking (i.e., walking economy). The purpose of this study was to determine whether walking economy is atypical in patients with PD when compared with healthy controls. A secondary purpose was to evaluate the associations of age, sex, and level of disease severity with walking economy in patients with PD. The rate of oxygen consumption (VO(2)) and other responses to treadmill walking were compared in 90 patients (64.4 +/- 10.3 years) and

Stroke commonly leads to reduced mobility, which leads to deconditioning and a worsening of vascular risk factors, such as diabetes. The worsened risk profile leads to further strokes and disability--a vicious cycle for the stroke survivor. Exercise (walking) therapy may break this cycle by providing adequate stimuli for improving gait through plastic adaptation in the brain and through increasing fitness. Randomized, controlled data demonstrate the efficacy for gains in fitness and walking speed, the latter being related to lasting changes in activation patterns of the brainstem and cerebellu

Neuraxial anaesthesia offers the most effective form of obstetric pain relief and is superior to other methods of analgesia, and it does not increase the risk of caesarean section. In daily practice, various techniques are used including the options of patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) and combined spinal epidural analgesia (CSEA). Risk information is one of the prerequisites for 'informed consent'. Omitting the epidural test dose and using low-dose local anaesthetics with lipophilic opioids enhances early mobilisation.

The mechanisms involved in rapidly terminating human gait were studied. Subjects were asked to walk at a comfortable speed and to stop walking as soon as they felt an electrical stimulus to the superficial peroneal nerve. This simulated hitting an obstacle with the top of the foot. Stimuli were presented repeatedly at random during a 20-min period of walking. Electromyograms and joint angular movements of the right leg and forces under both feet were recorded. The step cycle was divided into 16 parts, and the responses to stimuli in each part were analyzed separately. Subjects generally stoppe

Between 1979 and 1981, 35 patients were treated at our institution. All patients were more than 18 months of age and 50 congenitally dislocated hips were treated. The average age at operation was 7 years and 3 months. Whereas children under the age of 6 were typically operated upon by open reduction and Salter, Pemberton, or Dega osteotomy partly combined with femoral osteotomy, in the group of the patients older than 6 years with high iliac hip dislocations, a method was used to avoid femoral shortening. By means of the Wagner distractor the dislocated hips were brought opposite to the acetab

BACKGROUND: While outdoor walking exercise therapy could likely elicit multiple beneficial effects in persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS), little evidence exists.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of a 7-week group-based outdoor walking exercise therapy intervention on walking capacity and mental well-being as well as additional outcomes in pwMS.
METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, n = 62 ambulatory pwMS (49/62, 79% females; 51 years [range, 27-68 years]), patient-determined disease steps 1.7 (range, 0-4) were assigned to either a WALK group (a 'personalized' program suited to

Toe walking is observed in pathological populations including cerebral palsy, stroke, and autism spectrum disorder. To understand pathological toe walking, previous studies have analyzed non-habitual toe walking. These studies found sagittal plane deviations between heel-toe and toe walking at the hip, knee, and ankle. Further investigation is merited as toe walking may involve altered biomechanics at more distal joints, such as the midtarsal joint. The purpose of this study was to examine biomechanical differences between rearfoot strike walking (RFSW) and non-rearfoot strike walking (NRFSW)

Spatial memory enables us to locate places and objects in space, to determine our position and manage spatial relationships in our environment. Our operations are displayed in a space that sometimes is inaccessible. In this case, the impossibility of movement within the context forces individuals to rely on the information gathered from limited viewpoints. This study investigates the use of walking and non-walking spaces using two equivalent virtual reality tasks in which displacement is only permitted in one of them. One hundred and fifty participants were divided into three age groups: 50-59

Previous literature suggests that age-related deficits of dual-task walking are particularly pronounced with second tasks that require continuous visual processing. Here we evaluate whether the difficulty of the walking task matters as well. To this end, participants were asked to walk along a straight pathway of 20m length in four different walking conditions: (a) wide path and preferred pace; (b) narrow path and preferred pace, (c) wide path and fast pace, (d) obstacled wide path and preferred pace. Each condition was performed concurrently with a task requiring visual processing or fine mot
