BACKGROUND: Little attention has been paid to potential relationships between mental health, trauma, and personal exposures to Ebola virus disease (EVD) and health behaviors in post-conflict West Africa. We tested a conceptual model linking mental health and trauma to EVD risk behaviors and EVD prevention behaviors.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: Using survey data from a representative sample in the Western Urban and Western Rural districts of Sierra Leone, this study examines associations between war exposures, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, depression, anxiety, and personal EVD expo

Symptoms of Gulf War Syndrome and chronic Lyme disease are very similar. Lyme disease is a condition which can be difficult to diagnose since one of the main features of the condition, the erythema migrans rash, may be absent or overlooked and serological testing for Lyme disease may be falsely negative. Symptoms of Lyme disease may not became apparent until years after exposure to the causative organism. Military personnel during training in the field are at risk of tick bites and it may be that those who developed Gulf War Syndrome entered the conflict with latent Lyme disease. There has bee

IMPORTANCE: Russia first invaded Ukraine in 2014, annexing the Crimean Peninsula and occupying parts of eastern Ukraine. On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion that is currently ongoing. Despite the chronic nature of the armed conflict, evidence of its cumulative impact on adolescent mental health since 2014 remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of wartime traumatic stressors, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, depressive symptoms, and suicidality and to examine the differential associations of war exposure with adolescent mental health.

The outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, 2023, has presented unprecedented challenges to older adults' mental health, including increased posttraumatic stress, anxiety, and depression. The current study examined potential war- and age-related factors associated with probable posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), clinical depression (probable depression), and generalized anxiety disorder (probable anxiety) among older adults during the ongoing war. Moreover, due to the continued threat of death, we examined whether death anxiety is an additional contributing factor to older adults' pr

Exposure to war and terrorism presents a significant, global mental health challenge. Such adverse events give rise to extreme stress, resulting in widely varying psychological outcomes, from minimal impact to severe anxiety and related symptoms. Adolescence, a developmental period marked by an increased prevalence of anxiety disorders, may render individuals particularly vulnerable to the psychological consequences of war. Identifying biomarkers predicting risk is critically important for early detection and intervention efforts. Considerable research examines the role of variation in firstha

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to determine the amount of trauma impact and significant post-traumatic stress symptoms, which can indicate a possible post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in a sample of former German child soldiers of World War II.
METHODS: 103 participants were recruited through the press, then administered a modified Post-traumatic Diagnostic Scale (PDS).
RESULTS: Subjects reported a high degree of trauma exposure, with 4.9% reporting significant post-traumatic stress symptoms after WW II, and 1.9% reporting that these symptoms persist to the present.
CONCLUSION: I

INTRODUCTION: Shared traumatic reality occurs when therapists are doubly exposed to a traumatic event, both through their clients' experience, along with their own direct exposure. Studies have shown that a shared traumatic reality can lead to both positive and negative outcomes for therapists. Most studies have examined these reactions sometime after the end of the traumatic event, and less is known about reactions that occur during a traumatic event. In addition, most studies have assumed, rather than examined, indirect exposure. In this study, we extend this literature by examining direct a

Exposure to war is a severe traumatic experience with disastrous mental health effects. This study examined the mental health among 5,560 residents in 11 countries worldwide at different geographic distances from the epicenter of the Russian-Ukrainian War (RUW). An online questionnaire assessed war-related variables (e.g., personal experiences with RUW, perceived concern and threat), previous life stress experiences, and mental health (i.e., resilience, anxiety, depression, perceived stress, ICD-11 PTSD, and CPTSD). Results showed regional differences. Ukrainians had the worst mental health in

Concerns about unexplained illnesses among veterans of the 1991 Gulf War appeared soon after that conflict ended. Many environmental causes have been suggested, including possible exposure to depleted uranium munitions, vaccines and other drugs used to protect troops, deliberate or accidental exposure to chemical warfare agents and pesticides and smoke from oil-well fires. To help resolve these issues, US and UK governments have sought independent expert scientific advice from prestigious, independent scientific and public health experts, including the US National Academies of Science and the

Grim national statistics about the U.S. opioid crisis are increasingly well known to the American public. Far less well known is that U.S. servicemembers are at ground zero of the epidemic, with veterans facing an overdose death rate of up to twice that of civilians. Exploiting a quasi-experiment in overseas deployment assignment, this study estimates the causal impact of combat exposure among the deployed in the Global War on Terrorism on opioid abuse. We find that exposure to war theater substantially increased the risk of prescription painkiller abuse and illicit heroin use among active dut

Data from the National Vietnam Veteran Readjustment Study (NVVRS) revealed a prevalence of current posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in female Vietnam Theater veterans half the size of the prevalence in their male counterparts. This stands in contrast to the elevated prevalence of PTSD in women obtained in general population surveys. This study undertakes further analyses of gender differences in the NVVRS and how these differences might be specified by the amount and type of exposure to war-zone stress. The findings indicate that male elevations in PTSD are limited to men who served under

On October 7, 2023, a war erupted in Israel following a mass terror attack including mass shootings, violent events, civilian abductions, and numerous fatalities, ranking as the third most deadliest terror attack. This cross-sectional, population-based study evaluated the impact on the mental health and utilization of mental health services in the Arab and Jewish populations. Conducted through a virtual platform, the study compared demographic factors, exposure to war-related events, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress symptoms among 517 participants in a representative sample of the adult popu

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is common and can burden individuals, families and society. This exploratory study conducted in response to the full-scale war in Ukraine from February 2022 aimed to assess the impact of war-related distress on civilians living with chronic pain.
METHODS: Participants were asked to fill in an online questionnaire evaluating pain diagnoses, pain characteristics, analgesic use, screening for anxiety and depression.
RESULTS: The cohort comprised individuals receiving care in five chronic pain centres in Ukraine before February 2022. Between December 2022 and March 2023,

US Veterans are disproportionately affected by type 2 diabetes (T2D) compared with civilians. Previously, we demonstrated that serum GAS5 levels are lower in Veterans with T2D compared with non-diabetics and established GAS5 as a genetic biomarker for T2D, validated by others. Dried blood spots (DBS) are advantageous because collection is minimally invasive, and shipment can be at room temperature. Measurement of lncRNAs in DBS is not yet reported and hence we sought to measure lncRNA GAS5 levels in DBS collected from Veteran participants. Results demonstrate that older age was independently a

Shortly after the Gulf War in 1990-1991, service men and women began reporting multiple symptoms ranging from persistent headaches, widespread pain, chronic fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, mood dysregulation, gastrointestinal issues, skin abnormalities, and respiratory problems. This prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to initially classify the disorder as chronic multi-symptom illness (CMI), where it later became known as Gulf War Illness (GWI). Researchers and healthcare professionals since the early 1990s have been working extensively on alleviating the symptoms ex

BACKGROUND: Pathways through which wartime stress leads to excess mortality have not been examined so far. The current study examines wartime stress in relation to late-life mortality among 1448 World War II survivors, and potential mediating effects of mental health symptoms that were assessed in 1992.
METHODS: In 1992, a community survey was held. In 2002, vital status was checked.
RESULTS: The highest hazard rates of mortality were found among military veterans and war survivors who had been seriously wounded. Posttraumatic stress disorder, suicidal thoughts, and, particularly, depression

UNLABELLED: Recent studies show the importance of timing of an intervention in the prevention of mental health disorders followed by exposure to traumatic experiences and lend further support to the concept of the "golden hours". On the second day of the war escalation in Ukraine, a psychological first aid (PFA) digital intervention was launched aimed at promoting the well-being of the population at risk. Chatbot 'Friend' provided psychoeducation and self-help guidance on how to cope with war-related stress. About 50,000 users interacted with the chatbot from March 2022 until the end of May 20

BACKGROUND: The ongoing war in Gaza since 2023 has caused unprecedented trauma and widespread displacement, with nearly 200,000 casualties and over 90% of the population displaced into crowded shelters and makeshift tents. Evidence on the mental health effects on children during this crisis remains scarce.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in May 2025 among displaced children aged 3-12 years living in shelters and tented communities across the inhabited areas of the Gaza Strip. The study used a multistage purposive and convenience sampling strategy. Caregivers filled out question

OBJECTIVE: Engaging in war-related violence can have a devastating impact on military personnel, with research suggesting that injuring or killing others can contribute to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and moral injury. However, there is also evidence that perpetrating violence in war can become pleasurable to a substantial number of combatants and that developing this "appetitive" form of aggression can diminish PTSD severity. Secondary analyses were conducted on data from a study of moral injury in U.S., Iraq, and Afghanistan combat veterans, to examine the impact of reco
