Zinc Phthalocyanine Sensing Mechanism Quantification for Potential Application in Chemical Warfare Agent Detectors.

Rapid and accurate detection of lethal volatile compounds is an emerging requirement to ensure the security of the current and future society. Since the threats are becoming more complex, the assurance of future sensing devices' performance can be obtained solely based on a thorough fundamental approach, by utilizing physics and chemistry together. In this work, we have applied thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) to study dimethyl methylophosphate (DMMP, sarin analogue) adsorption on zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc), aiming to achieve the quantification of the sensing mechanism. Furthermore, we ut

Methyl salicylate: a reactive chemical warfare agent surrogate to detect reaction with hypochlorite.

Methyl salicylate (MeS) has a rich history as an inert physical simulant for the chemical warfare agents sulfur mustard and soman, where it is used extensively for liquid- and vapor-permeation testing. Here we demonstrate possible utility of MeS as a reactivity simulant for chlorine-based decontaminants. In these experiments MeS was reacted with sodium hypochlorite varying stoichiometry, temperature, reaction time, and pH. No colored oxidation products were observed; however, chlorination of the aromatic ring occurred ortho (methyl 3-chlorosalicylate) and para (methyl 5-chlorosalicylate) to th

Detection of warfare agents in liquid foods using the brine shrimp lethality assay.

The brine shrimp lethality assay (BSLA) was used for rapid and non-specific detection of biological and chemical warfare agents at concentrations considerably below that which will cause harm to humans. Warfare agents detected include T-2 toxin, trimethylsilyl cyanide, and commercially available pesticides such as dichlorvos, diazinon, dursban, malathion, and parathion. The assay was performed by introducing 50 μL of milk or orange juice contaminated with each analyte into vials containing 10 freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii in seawater. This was incubated at 28 °C for 24 h, after which mo

Long-term pulmonary complications of chemical warfare agent exposure in Iraqi Kurdish civilians.

The Iraqi government used a range of chemical weapons, including blistering and nerve agents, against Iraqi Kurdish civilians in the 1980s. Few data exist about the long-term respiratory consequences of this exposure. In this study, Kurdish subjects with a history of exposure to chemical weapons were invited to attend a clinical assessment, including a review of their history, physical examination, and a high-resolution computed tomography (CT) of the thorax. Blistering at the time of exposure was used to define significant exposure to mustard gas. Results were compared between two groups of b

Extremity hemorrhage control in urban warfare: A retrospective analysis of the Swords of Iron War.

BACKGROUND: Tourniquets are a life-saving intervention for controlling life-threatening extremity hemorrhage. However, prolonged tourniquet application can lead to significant morbidity. This study aimed to assess tourniquet usage among military personnel in modern urban warfare and evaluate the proportion of cases potentially suitable for tourniquet conversion. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort analysis of all Israeli military casualties hospitalized between October 27, 2023, and November 30, 2024, with war-related injuries during the Hamas-Israel War. Data were obtained from the preh

Blast and fragmentation injuries associated with cluster munitions in modern warfare: a narrative review.

Cluster munitions remain a significant source of blast and fragmentation injuries in modern armed conflicts owing to their wide-area effects, high fragment density, and the persistence of unexploded submunitions. These weapons generate complex injury patterns involving blast overpressure, high-velocity fragment penetration, thermal effects, and multi-system trauma, posing substantial clinical, forensic, and humanitarian challenges. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on injury mechanisms associated with cluster munitions, with particular emphasis on fragment-induced penetrating

Poxviruses as Agents of Biological Warfare: The Importance of Ensuring Ethical Standards for Research with Viruses.

Historically, biological agents have been used to target various populations. One of the earliest examples could be the catastrophic effect of smallpox in Australia in the eighteenth century (as alleged by some historians). Modern biological techniques can be used to both create or provide protection against various agents of biological warfare. Any microorganism (viruses, bacteria, and fungi) or its toxins can be used as biological agents. Minnesota Department of Health has listed Smallpox (variola major) as a category A bioterrorism agent, even though it has been eradicated in 1980 through a

The impact of military sexual trauma and warfare exposure on women veterans' perinatal outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: In the general population, history of trauma is associated with a range of adverse perinatal outcomes, which have long-term negative consequences for both mother and child. Research examining the impact of trauma, particularly trauma occurring during military service, on perinatal outcomes among women veterans is still in its nascence. The current study examined if warfare exposure and military sexual trauma (MST) contributed unique variance to the prediction of a broad range of adverse perinatal outcomes (i.e., preterm birth, full-term birth, infant birth weight, postpartum depress

Impregnation on activated carbon for removal of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) and radioactive content.

Nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare (NBC) agents cause an inevitable threat to defense forces and civilians. Exposure to these toxic agents causes a lot of damage to lives. One can avoid the damage of these toxic agents by taking appropriate preventive measures. Respiratory protection is obviously necessary when military personnel or civilians get bounded by such type of noxious situation as contaminant-free air is then required for breathing and it can only be provided by means of a proper gas mask and relevant canister. In purification of contaminated atmospheres, activated carbon has

[Toxicological effects of weapons of mass destruction and noxious agents in modern warfare and terrorism].

Weapons of mass destruction (WMD) best portray the twisted use of technological achievements against the human species. Despite arm control efforts, WMD threat continues to exist and even proliferate. This in turn calls for improvement in defensive measures against this threat. The modern soldier is exposed to a number of chemical, biological, and radiological agents in military and peace operations, while civilians are mainly exposed to terrorist attacks. Regardless of origin or mode of action, WMDs and other noxious agents aim for the same - to make an organism dysfunctional. Because their e

Research Progress in the Degradation of Chemical Warfare Agent Simulants Using Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Chemical warfare agents primarily comprise organophosphorus nerve agents, saliva alkaloids, cyanides, and mustard gas. Exposure to these agents can result in severe respiratory effects, including spasms, edema, and increased secretions leading to breathing difficulties and suffocation. Protecting public safety and national security from such threats has become an urgent priority. Porous metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have emerged as promising candidates for the degradation of chemical warfare agents due to their large surface area, tunable pore size distribution, and excellent catalyt

Recent Trends in Protective Textiles against Biological Threats: A Focus on Biological Warfare Agents.

The rising threats to worldwide security (affecting the military, first responders, and civilians) urge us to develop efficient and versatile technological solutions to protect human beings. Soldiers, medical personnel, firefighters, and law enforcement officers should be adequately protected, so that their exposure to biological warfare agents (BWAs) is minimized, and infectious microorganisms cannot be spread so easily. Current bioprotective military garments include multilayered fabrics integrating activated carbon as a sorptive agent and a separate filtrating layer for passive protection.

Neuroprotective effects of imidazenil against chemical warfare nerve agent soman toxicity in guinea pigs.

The chemical warfare nerve agent, soman irreversibly inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE) leading to hypercholinergy and seizures which trigger glutamate toxicity and status epilepticus ultimately resulting in neuropathology and neurobehavioral deficits. The standard emergency treatment comprising of anticholinergic, AChE reactivator and anticonvulsant does not completely protect against soman toxicity. We have evaluated imidazenil, a new anticonvulsant imidazo benzodiazepine with high affinity and intrinsic efficacy at α5-, α2-, and α3- but low intrinsic efficacy at α1-containing GABA(A) rece
