Caffeine improves supramaximal cycling but not the rate of anaerobic energy release.

The purpose of this study was to determine if improved supramaximal exercise performance in trained cyclists following caffeine ingestion was associated with enhanced O(2) uptake (VO2 kinetics), increased anaerobic energy provision (accumulated O(2)-AO(2)-deficit), or a reduction in the accumulation of metabolites (for example, K(+)) associated with muscular fatigue. Six highly trained male cyclists (VO2peak 68 +/- 8 mL kg(-1) min(-1)) performed supramaximal (120% VO2peak) exercise bouts to exhaustion on an electronically braked cycle ergometer, following double-blind and randomized ingestion

Effect of temperament on cortisol response to a single exercise bout in Thoroughbred racehorses - short communication.

Temperament has not been taken into account in previous studies evaluating the stress response to exercise in horses. The aim of the present study was to investigate the cortisol response in Thoroughbred racehorses to a single exercise bout, and to analyse the results based on the basic personality of the horse examined. Twenty healthy Thoroughbred horses were selected for the study based on a 25-item rating questionnaire survey used for characterising equine temperament. Eight temperamental and twelve calm horses took part in the experiment. The horses trotted as a warm-up activity, and then

Relationship between infrared thermography and muscle damage markers in physically active men after plyometric exercise.

Plyometric training has been used in several sports and fitness programs to improve jumping ability and explosive strength, both in individual and team sports. Eccentric muscle actions, such as those performed during plyometric jumps, induce muscle damage and consequently a rise in skin temperature (Tsk). Thus, the purpose of this study is to assess the response of infrared thermography measurement as an indirect marker of muscle damage after a protocol of plyometric jumps in physically active subjects. Therefore, for the aim of this study ten male subjects with no previous experience in plyom

Comparison of telehealth and supervised phase III cardiac rehabilitation in regional Australia: protocol for a non-inferiority trial.

INTRODUCTION: Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation programmes (ExCRP) promote recovery and secondary prevention for individuals with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Despite this, enrolment and adherence to ExCRP in rural locations is low. Telehealth programmes provide a convenient, home-based intervention, but concerns remain about compliance to exercise prescription. This paper presents the rationale and protocol design to determine if telehealth delivered ExCRP is not inferior to supervised ExCRP for improving cardiovascular function and exercise fidelity. METHOD AND ANALYSIS: A non-inferior

Acute effects of massage or active exercise in relieving muscle soreness: randomized controlled trial.

Massage is commonly believed to be the best modality for relieving muscle soreness. However, actively warming up the muscles with exercise may be an effective alternative. The purpose of this study was to compare the acute effect of massage with active exercise for relieving muscle soreness. Twenty healthy female volunteers (mean age 32 years) participated in this examiner-blind randomized controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01478451). The participants performed eccentric contractions for the upper trapezius muscle on a Biodex dynamometer. Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) presented 48

Isokinetic dynamometry: implications for muscle testing and rehabilitation.

Isokinetic exercise has become an increasingly popular modality in rehabilitative medicine during the past decade. The facility by which isokinetic dynamometers provide information about dynamic muscle contractions has, no doubt, been a major factor in this popularity. Isokinetic dynamometers are passive devices which resist applied forces and control the speed of exercise at a predetermined rate. Such dynamometers generally provide a record of applied force throughout a joint range of motion. Some of the postulated advantages of isokinetic exercise include safety, accommodating resistance and

Rehabilitation in Older Coronary Patients.

Modern medicine dictates a more active therapeutic approach in the geriatric population. This review summarizes relevant data on cardiac rehabilitation in patients aged 65 years or older. The cardiovascular risk factors in the elderly are similar to those in younger people; thus, treating hypertension or hypercholesterolemia, cessation of smoking, and changing of life style and proper diet are recommended regardless of age. Cardiovascular function gradually declines with age, and the incidence of atherosclerotic heart disease increases. Rehabilitation programs for elderly patients with postmyo

Effects of exercise mode in knee cartilage thickness.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear how cycling and running would differ in terms of changes in cartilage thickness. Also, given squats are a popular type of exercise used to strengthen lower limbs, it is critical to assess if loads used during resisted training could lead to changes in cartilage cushioning properties. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the effects of exercise mode in knee cartilage thickness. METHODS: This study utilized a randomized cross-over design with repeated measures. All sessions were completed between 48hrs and seven days, at the same time of the day. Fourtee
