New efficient meta-fermentation process for lactic acid production from municipal solid waste.

BACKGROUND: The global market for lactic acid is witnessing growth on the back of increasing applications of lactic acid for manufacturing polylactic acid. Indeed, the lactic acid market is expected to reach 9.8 billion US dollars by 2025. The new concept of meta-fermentation has been proposed in recent years as an alternative to fermentation with pure cultures, due to multiple advantages such as lower susceptibility to contamination, no need for sterilization of culture media or lower raw material costs. However, there are still challenges to overcome to increase the conversion efficiency, de

Production of value-added aromatics from wasted COVID-19 mask via catalytic pyrolysis.

In this study, wasted mask is chosen as a pyrolysis feedstock whose generation has incredibly increased these days due to COVID-19. We suggest a way to produce value-added chemicals (e.g., aromatic compounds) from the mask with high amounts through catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP). To this end, the effects of zeolite catalyst properties on the upgradation efficiency of pyrolytic products produced from pyrolysis of wasted mask were investigated. The compositions and yields of pyrolytic gases and oils were characterized as functions of pyrolysis temperature and the type of zeolite catalyst (HBeta,

Effect of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate on hydrogen production from dark fermentation of waste activated sludge.

Sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), a typical surfactant being widely used in various applications, was highly accumulated in waste activated sludge. To date, however, its effect on hydrogen production from dark fermentation of sludge has not been documented. The work therefore aimed to explore whether and how SDBS affects hydrogen production. Experimental results showed that with an increase of SDBS from 0 to 30 mg/g TSS, the maximal hydrogen yield increased from 2.47 to 10.73 mL/g VSS (without any treatment) and from 13.05 to 23.51 mL/g VSS (under free ammonia pretreatment). Biocrude oil production via hydrothermal liquefaction of food waste in a simplified high-throughput reactor.

In this study, the hydrothermal liquefaction of food waste was investigated for generating bio-oils or biocrudes using a simplified high-throughput reactor. Different operating conditions were parametrically tested for obtaining maximum yield of biocrudes at temperatures from 280 to 340 °C and sample-to-water mixture ratios from 1:3 to 1:7, with 30 min residence time. The biocrude yields were found to increase significantly with increasing temperature and mixture ratio. A maximum biocrude yield of approximately 40% w/w dry basis (from a total liquid product yield of over 56% w/w) and energy re

Pure cultures for synthetic culture development: Next level municipal waste treatment for polyhydroxyalkanoates production.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), as bio-based plastics, promise a transition from petroleum products to green and sustainable alternatives. However, their commercial production is yet impeded by high production costs. In this study, we assessed synthetic culture in mono and co-culture modes for bacterial PHA production. It was demonstrated that volatile fatty acids (VFAs) derived from food waste and primary sludge are cheap carbon sources for maintaining high production yields in the synthetic cultures. The maximum obtained PHA was 77.54 ± 5.67% of cell dried weight (CDW) (1.723 g/L) from Cupriav

Enhanced biotreatability of petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated mining waste coupled with the attenuation of acid drainage production.

A biostimulation study was conducted on mining waste residue with nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) and/or liming agent (ash or CaCO3 ) amendment to assess petroleum hydrocarbon (PHC) biodegradation efficiency by indigenous microorganisms. Compounds accumulated and/or released by treated samples were also monitored to determine the potential for acid mine drainage production during biostimulation. The potential for natural attenuation (i.e., the biodegradation of PHC contamination) was initially low but increased significantly upon nutrient addition. The best results were obtained when nutrie

Soil flushing pilot test in a landfill polluted with liquid organic wastes from lindane production.

Sites contaminated by Dense Non-Aqueous Liquid Phases (DNAPLs) containing chlorinated compounds are a ubiquitous problem caused by spills or the dumping of wastes with no concern for the environment. Their migration by gravity through the subsurface and their accumulation far below ground level make in-situ treatments the most appropriate remediation technologies. In this work, an aqueous solution containing a non-ionic and biodegradable surfactant was injected in the Sardas alluvial layer contaminated at some points with DNAPL (formed by a mixture of more than 28 chlorinated compounds) from l

From waste product to blood, brains and narratives: developing a pluralist sociology of contributions to health research.

The aim of this paper is to examine the meaning of the concept of donation in health research. Drawing on a set of narrative interviews with people invited to donate biosamples for research and a range of other studies, we identify several conceptual themes that speak to the complexity of the current landscape of critical thinking about donation. These conceptual themes are: the language of 'donation'; a hierarchy of biosamples; alternative informational value; narratives as donation; coincidental donation, convenience and degree of invasiveness; and rights, consent and benefits of research pa

A batch assay to measure microbial hydrogen sulfide production from sulfur-containing solid wastes.

Large volumes of sulfur-containing wastes enter municipal solid waste landfills each year. Under the anaerobic conditions that prevail in landfills, oxidized forms of sulfur, primarily sulfate, are converted to sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is corrosive to landfill gas collection and treatment systems, and its presence in landfill gas often necessitates the installation of expensive removal systems. For landfill operators to understand the cost of managing sulfur-containing wastes, an estimate of the H2S production potential is needed. The objective of this study was to develop and demonstra

Continuous volatile fatty acid production from waste activated sludge hydrolyzed at pH 12.

This study adopted rapid alkaline treatment at pH 12 to hydrolyze 66% of total chemical oxygen demands. Then the hydrolyzed liquor was fermented in a continuous-flow stirred reactor to produce volatile fatty acids (VFAs) at 8-h hydraulic retention time and at 35 °C. The maximum VFA productivity reached 365 mg VFAs g(-1) volatile suspended solids in a 45-d operation, with most produced VFAs being acetate and propionate, principally produced by protein degradation. The Bacteroidia, ε-proteobacteria and the Clostridia were identified to be the classes correlating with the fermentation processes.

Solid-state fermentation of green waste for the production of biostimulants to enhance lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) cultivation under water stress: Closing the organic waste cycle.

Food production faces important challenges such as water scarcity and the overall need of novel sustainable strategies. This study assesses the effect of the biostimulant produced through solid-state fermentation (SSF) of green waste (wood chips and grass residues) inoculated with Trichoderma harzianum with and without l-tryptophan as a precursor for indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production, a well-known plant hormone. The fermented solid demonstrated significant positive effects on the growth of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) under different irrigation conditions. Substantial enhancements were obse

Bridging waste-derived carbon catalyst innovation and machine learning for sustainable biodiesel production: a comprehensive review.

Biodiesel is a promising sustainable alternative to fossil diesel, but its deployment is limited by challenges in catalyst efficiency, stability, reusability, and process optimization. Metal-doped activated carbon (AC) and biochar-based catalysts have attracted considerable attention owing to their high surface area, tunable porosity, and low-cost production from waste biomass. In parallel, machine learning (ML) has emerged as a powerful tool for biodiesel yield prediction, process modeling, and optimization. However, these research areas have largely progressed separately. This review combine

Waste salt-assisted pyrolysis of antibiotic fermentation residue for biochar production and hexavalent chromium reduction mechanism.

The accumulation of antibiotic fermentation residue (AFR) and pharmaceutical waste salt (WS) poses a severe disposal challenge. Herein, a WS-assisted co-pyrolysis strategy is proposed to convert these hazardous waste streams into an active material for hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) reduction. During pretreatment, the intrinsic osmotic stress of WS disrupts microbial cells in AFR, thereby promoting deep dehydration. The subsequent thermal process effectively degrades residual antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes. During co-pyrolysis, the inherent NaCl in WS acts as a mineral-phase regulat

Fermentation-based oxalic acid production aimed at sustainable critical metal recovery from electronic waste.

This study systematically investigates the biogenic production of oxalic acid (OA, H2C2O4) via submerged fermentation to establish a sustainable reagent for critical metal recovery applications. Preliminary shake-flask experiments evaluated Aspergillus niger strains (ATCC 1015 and CECT 2807), optimal carbon sources, and the influence of pH adjustment. Despite inherent biological variance across replicates, A. niger ATCC 1015 demonstrated a superior production trajectory, yielding 71.0 ± 27.7 mM OA in 5 days. Intermittent pH adjustment above 4.0 significantly enhanced secretion to 90.4 ± 5.8 mM

Effect of iron-loaded biochar on medium-chain fatty acid production from waste activated sludge.

Conductive materials can enhance medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA) production from waste activated sludge (WAS), but the influence of their addition timing remains unclear. Here, a biochar-supported zero-valent iron composite (ZVI/BC) was added either before acidification (the AC group) or before chain elongation (CE; the CE group) in a two-stage anaerobic fermentation system. Adding ZVI/BC before acidification yielded the highest caproate production of 10.0  g/L as chemical oxygen demand, 64.5 % and 119.5 % higher than those in the control and CE groups, respectively. This advantage was accompan

Increasing long-chain dicarboxylic acid production by pretreating grease trap waste using ceramic ultrafiltration.

Grease trap waste (GTW) is a lipid-rich, low-value waste stream that is a promising feedstock for the production of long-chain dicarboxylic acids (LCDAs) by Candida viswanathii. However, the presence of anionic surfactants and trace metals hinders this bioconversion process. This study evaluated the use of ceramic ultrafiltration as a pretreatment technology. A 3 nm ZrO2 ceramic membrane removed approximately 90% of anionic surfactants and over 90% of Ni, Zn and Fe. Using a C1-grafted variant increased the flux sevenfold, to 2.3 L/(m2.h), while retaining the same level of removal. Pretreating

Magnesium chelation of low molecular weight peptides from protein-rich industrial wastes: Production and properties.

Magnesium chelating is considered a promising method to increase Mg uptake, thus fight against the prevalent case of Mg deficiency. In this study, hydrolysates and peptide fractions from spent brewer's yeast (SBY) and soybean meal (SBM) were evaluated for the magnesium chelating ability. Despite the similar amino acid profile and protein concentration, SBY hydrolysate showed superior chelating yield than that of SBM. Cross flow filtration was shown to have facilitated the chelating process, with the specific chelating yield peaked at 94.44 mg/g protein for the 3 kDa peptide fraction of SBY hyd

Enhanced methane production from waste activated sludge by potassium ferrate combined with thermal hydrolysis pretreatment.

Anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS) was one of the directions of sludge treatment, but how to effectively improve the production of methane as a resource product of anaerobic digestion of sludge still needs further research. The study examined how the combination of potassium ferrate (PF) and thermal hydrolysis (TH) pretreatment affected methane production from sludge. The results demonstrated a positive synergistic effect on methane production with PF-TH pretreatment. Specifically, by employing a 0.05 g/g TSS (total suspended solids) PF in conjunction with TH at 80 °C for 30 m
