Retrograde Training: Effects on Lower Body Strength and Power.

Backward walking and running on positive grades (retrograde training) represents a closed kinetic chain exercise used by rehabilitation specialists for patellofemoral-related injuries. To date, no longitudinal studies exist to support it use. This investigation examined the effects of retrograde training on lower body strength and power in recreational athletes aged 18-50 years over 6 weeks. Thirty-seven subjects were divided into two groups. Group 1 performed retrograde training 3 days∙wk-1 using treadmill speeds, grades and bout durations ranging from 1.6-4.9 m∙sec-1, 2.5-27.5% and 10-30 sec

No pain no gain: tender nodules in a competitive bodybuilder.

The subculture of bodybuilding is rife with people willing to do whatever is necessary to achieve the perfect physique. One particularly concerning behavior is the injection of site-enhancing-oils (SEO) into lagging muscle groups to achieve instant size and symmetry. The typical SEO is a combination of lidocaine, alcohol, and oil; it is rarely, if ever, administered by a qualified professional. As a result, there are a variety of potential complications that can manifest in the skin and other organ systems. In our case, a 41-year-old former competitive bodybuilder was referred to our clinic fo

C6 Spinous Process Fracture in a Young Adult.

A 21-year-old male military academy cadet developed acute posterior neck pain after performing multiple sets of overhead shoulder presses and resting the bar on his lower neck and shoulders. He presented to a direct-access physical therapy clinic. Due to the acute onset and focal nature of pain in the setting of repetitive weightlifting, the physical therapist ordered radiographs of the cervical spine, which revealed a C6 spinous process fracture. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2017;47(8):578. doi:10.2519/jospt.2017.7277.

Muscle strengthening in a post-polio subject through a high-resistance weight-training program.

A 48-year-old woman started experiencing increased muscle weakness and fatigue at age 44, 40 years after the onset of acute poliomyelitis. The acute poliomyelitis resulted in severely weak lower limb muscles and as a result, she had used crutches for more than 40 years. Computer-aided force transducer systems were used to determine isometric muscle strength. Both quadriceps and left ankle dorsiflexors were severely weak and could not generate any measurable force. Isometric muscle strength of her right ankle dorsiflexors was 77 Newtons (N) (approximately 1/3 normal); isometric muscle strength

Exercise and arthritis. Exercise and the back.

Some of the positive benefits from participating in aerobic activity have already been addressed. However, an individual's ability to participate in many aerobic activities may be contingent on the ability to maintain a neutral or a stabilized spine. For example, the individual for whom jogging has been painful may be able to jog after he or she has learned trunk stabilization and is able to keep the spine in his or her pain-free position. Although Williams contended that jogging was an inappropriate activity for the individual with a low-back problem, contrary to this notion, White believes t

Effects of exoskeleton use on movement kinematics during performance of common work tasks: A case study.

BACKGROUND: An exoskeleton may assist performance of basic work-related tasks. Its application should not alter user kinematics, which compromise user safety. OBJECTIVE: This case study was used to assess whether people wearing a lower-body K-SRDTM exoskeleton could complete common work tasks without altering kinematics that may increase injury risk. METHODS: Three males performed three tasks: kneeling and standing (kneel), lifting and lowering a weighted box floor-to-waist (lift), and stair-climbing with a weighted box (climb), all repeated with and without exoskeleton use (EXO, NONE). The timing of prehensile movements in subjects with cerebral palsy.

In this study, a paradigm is presented for the assessment of manual dexterity in subjects with cerebral palsy (CP) that divides the prehensile action into a 'time-to-contact' phase and a 'time-in-contact' phase. Two experiments were performed that determined the effect of object weight on the timing of both phases for the impaired hand and non-impaired hand of subjects with spastic hemiparesis (N = 14). In the first experiment, subjects had to reach for and lift a tube at their own preferred speed. The results showed that the prehensile deficit of the impaired limb is to a large degree manifes

Self-efficacy and social support enable women to protect their pelvic floor health: A nonrandomized controlled trial in rural Nepal.

Carrying heavy loads increases the risk of pelvic organ disorders, particularly in low-income countries. Low self-efficacy hampers adoption of pelvic-floor-protective behaviors. The enabling hypothesis suggests that social support may strengthen women's behavioral self-efficacy. A three-arm parallel non-randomized controlled trial with 300 women and their social partners experimentally examined whether self-efficacy and social support can enable women's pelvic-floor-protective behaviors in rural Nepal. Three villages received (1) self-efficacy (2) self-efficacy and social support promotion, or

The highs and lows of lifting loads: SPM analysis of multi-segmental spine angles in healthy adults during manual handling with increased load.

Introduction: Manual handling personnel and those performing manual handling tasks in non-traditional manual handling industries continue to suffer debilitating and costly workplace injuries. Smart assistive devices are one solution to reducing musculoskeletal back injuries. Devices that provide targeted assistance need to be able to predict when and where to provide augmentation via predictive algorithms trained on functional datasets. The aim of this study was to describe how an increase in load impacts spine kinematics during a ground-to-platform manual handling task. Methods: Twenty-nine p

Perception of Bar Velocity Loss in Resistance Exercises: Accuracy Across Loads and Velocity Loss Thresholds in the Bench Press.

PURPOSE: Velocity-based training is used to prescribe and monitor resistance training based on velocity outputs measured with tracking devices. When tracking devices are unavailable or impractical to use, perceived velocity loss (PVL) can be used as a substitute, assuming sufficient accuracy. Here, we investigated the accuracy of PVL equal to 20% and 40% relative to the first repetition in the bench-press exercise. METHODS: Following a familiarization session, 26 resistance-trained men performed 4 sets of the bench-press exercise using 4 different loads based on their individual load-velocity

The Predictive Validity of Individualised Load-Velocity Relationships for Predicting 1RM: A Systematic Review and Individual Participant Data Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Load-velocity relationships are commonly used to estimate one-repetition maximums (1RMs). Proponents suggest these estimates can be obtained at high frequencies and assist with manipulating loads according to session-by-session fluctuations. Given their increasing popularity and development of associated technologies, a range of load-velocity approaches have been investigated. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis sought to quantify the predictive validity of individualised load-velocity relationships for the purposes of 1RM predicti

Sacral stress fracture in a young healthy athlete.

A healthy 25-yr-old male weightlifter presented with a 1-yr history of atraumatic right buttock pain. His pain had increased over time and was limiting his ability to exercise. At the time of presentation, he could not bear weight on the right buttock in the sitting or supine position. His gait was antalgic, favoring the right. There was increased fullness of the right gluteal muscles compared with the left, with tenderness in the region of the right sacroiliac joint. Active right hip flexion was painful. Strength, sensation, and reflexes were normal in the bilateral lower limbs. Fabere test w

Bilateral stress fracture of the ulna in an adult weightlifter: a case report.

Bilateral stress fractures of the ulna are extremely rare and have only been described in non-adults. In this case report we present a young adult weightlifter who reported bilateral stress fractures of both ulnae after increasing his training frequency and load. Stress fractures of the ulnae are examples of bone stress injuries due to repetitive muscle pull. The diagnosis can be made by radiography, isotope bone scan, CT or MRI. Thorough training analysis and adaptation is essential to treat this rare injury. Return to full activity can take up to three months.

Potential benefits of resistance exercise training on nutritional status in renal failure.

Resistance or strength exercise training may help reverse the malnutrition common among patients in chronic renal failure and delay the progression of renal disease. Resistance training is characterized by resisting, lifting, and lowering weights. It results in muscle mass accretion, improved physical function, and slowed progression of muscle wasting. Resistance exercise training for a period of 8 to 12 weeks results in significant increases in muscle mass, muscle strength, and muscle function in frail "Работает" elderly individuals as well as in specific patient populations. Peliosis hepatis in a young adult bodybuilder.

Peliosis hepatis, an unusual condition characterized by blood-filled spaces within the hepatic parenchyma, usually occurs in a variety of chronic wasting diseases such as tuberculosis or malignancy. It has been described in patients undergoing therapy with anabolic steroids in pharmacologic doses over extended periods of time. To our knowledge it has not been described in athletes who utilize them for performance enhancement. This report concerns a 27-yr-old bodybuilder with peliosis hepatis, which developed after chronic intermittent use of anabolic steroids.
