Welding fumes in the shipbuilding industry severely threaten workers' health. This study systematically investigated welding fume exposure in a Chinese shipyard, analyzing mass concentration, particle size distribution, and harmful metal content using data from 2015. Differences were observed across welding sites and processes. Confined spaces and gas metal arc welding (GMAW) were associated with significantly higher exposure levels. Welding fumes were dominated by particles smaller than 1.00 μm, a distribution influenced by welding site, distance from the welding spot, and process. Iron (Fe)

High-strength steels often require surface pretreatment before welding to remove contaminants and ensure weld quality. Compared with conventional mechanical grinding, which is time-consuming, labor-intensive, environmentally unfriendly, and potentially damaging to the substrate, laser cleaning offers a contact-free alternative to conventional surface-treatment methods and may reduce the use of abrasive or chemical cleaning agents. In this study, nanosecond laser cleaning of oxide films on 10CrNi2Mo3Cu2V steel was investigated in air and argon to determine the optimal process window. A 1064 nm,

Microscale cold welding is an efficient method for achieving high-quality joints, particularly in electronic components, as its low-temperature process preserves the mechanical and electrical properties of the base metals. However, the limited fundamental understanding of successful bonding mechanisms for dissimilar metal joining has significantly restricted its industrial adoption. This is especially true at the microscale, where heat-assisted methods are still generally preferred. Therefore, this work presents a test bed procedure for cold welding of dissimilar metals at the microscale. A Fo

The success rate of the electrosurgical high-frequency electric field welding technique lies in reasonable control of the welding time. However, the final impedance value used to control the welding time varies due to differences in tissue size and the welding method during the welding process. This study aims to introduce a new reference indicator not limited by impedance size from dynamic impedance to achieve an adequate weld strength with minimal thermal damage, providing feedback on the tissue welding effect in medical power supplies. End-to-end anastomosis experiments were conducted with

Welders or metal workers not being an exception are exposed to metals ions or oxides (fumes) at trace concentrations either through direct contact supplementation at occupational sites or indirectly through uptake from contaminated food, water or contaminated soil, dust, or air. The study aims to determine the effects of welding fumes exposure on haematological parameters in blood of experimental animals. The fumes were collected from welding sites during the activity by a skilled welder. 130 male experimental animals were utilized and made into 13 groups. 12 groups were given dosages calculat

Epidemiological studies in chromate production have established hexavalent chromium as a potent lung carcinogen. Inhalation of chromium(VI) most often occurs in mixtures with other metals as among stainless steel welders, which is the largest occupational group with Cr(VI) exposure. Surprisingly, carcinogenicity of Cr(VI)-containing welding fumes is moderate and not consistently higher than that of Cr-free welding. Here, we investigated interactions between chromate and three other metal ions [Fe(III), Mn(II), Ni(II)] that are typically released from stainless steel welding particles. In human

Current wound sealing systems such as nanoparticle-based gluing of tissues allow almost immediate wound sealing. The assistance of a laser beam allows the wound sealing with higher controllability due to the collagen fiber melting which is defined by loss of tertiary protein structure and restoration upon cooling. Usually one employs dyes to paint onto the wound, if water absorption bands are absent. In case of strong bleeding or internal wounds such applications are not feasible due to low welding depth in case of water absorption bands, dyes washing off, or the dyes becoming diluted within t

OBJECTIVES: Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) emitted during arc welding frequently causes keratoconjunctivitis and erythema in the workplace. The degree of hazard from UVR exposure depends on the welding method and conditions. Therefore, it is important to identify the UVR levels present under various conditions.
METHODS: We experimentally evaluated the UVR levels emitted in gas metal arc welding (GMAW) of mild steel. We used both a pulsed welding current and a non-pulsed welding current. The shielding gases were 80% Ar + 20% CO2 and 100% CO2. The effective irradiance defined in the American Confe

Effects of gravitational acceleration were investigated on the weld pool shape and microstructural evolution for 304 stainless steel and Al-4wt% Cu alloy. Effects of welding heat source were investigated by using laser beam welding (LBW) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). As the gravitational level was increased from low gravity (LG approximately 1.2 g) to high gravity (HG approximately 1.8 g) using a NASA KC-135 aircraft, the weld pool shape for 304 stainless steel was influenced considerably during GTAW. However, insignificant change in the microstructure and solute distribution was observ

The explosive welding (EXW) ofγ-TiAl to Al offers a promising route to fabricate lightweight, high-strength hybrid structures, yet the atomic-scale bonding mechanisms remain unclear. In this work, large-scale molecular dynamics simulations were performed to investigate the effects of flyer velocity (1.5-2.9 km s-1) and collision angle (10°-40°) on the thermal response, diffusion behavior, phase evolution, and mechanical performance ofγ-TiAl/Al EXW. Increasing flyer velocity drives a transition from solid-solid contact to solid-liquid and ultimately liquid-liquid mixing, accompanied by elevated

The connection between flexible textiles and stiff electronic components has always been structurally weak and a limiting factor in the establishment of smart textiles in our everyday life. This paper focuses on the formation of reliable connections between conductive textiles and conventional litz wires using ultrasonic welding. The paper offers a promising approach to solving this problem. The electrical and mechanical performance of the samples were investigated after 15 and 30 wash-and-dry cycles in a laundry machine. Here the contact resistances and their peeling strength were measured. F

It is estimated that greater than 1 million workers are exposed to welding fume (WF) by inhalation daily. The potentially toxic metals found in WF are known to cause multiple adverse pulmonary and systemic effects, including cardiovascular disease, and these metals have also been shown to translocate to the liver. This occupational exposure combined with a high fat (HF) Western diet, which has been shown to cause hyperlipidemia and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), has the potential to cause significant mixed exposure metabolic changes in the liver. The goal of this study was to use m

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) transection injuries may occur during thyroidectomy and other surgical procedures. Laser nerve welding has been shown to cause less technique-related axonal damage than the traditional suture method. We compared functional adductor results using these two methods of RLN repair.
STUDY DESIGN: Animal model.
METHODS: Canine hemilarynges underwent pretreatment testing of laryngeal adductor function, followed by RLN transection and repair using potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) laser welding (n = 8) or microneural suture (n = 16) techniques.

Welding fume contains manganese (Mn) which is known to be bio-available to and neurotoxic for the central nervous system. Although an essential metal, Mn overexposure may cause manganism, a parkinsonian syndrome. The present welder study sought to improve the clinical portrait of manganism and to determine dose-effect relationships. The welders were employed in the construction of the new Bay Bridge (San Francisco) and welded in confined spaces for up to 2 years with minimal protection and poor ventilation. Neurological, neuropsychological, neurophysiological, and pulmonary examinations were g

The left atrial appendage is one source of thromboemobolus. Complete occlusion of this appendage is required to sever communication with the left atrium; however, current ligation techniques can potentially leave residual communication. A novel technique of occluding the appendage has been developed using a bipolar device and radiofrequency energy. Twelve patients underwent an off-pump, epicardial Maze procedure using radiofrequency ablation. As an adjunct to the procedure, ligation of the left atrial appendage was completed using the LigaSure Xtd (Valleylab, Tyco Healthcare, Boulder, CO) with
