A case of Williams' syndrome in a 22 years old man, is described. Clinical data, as well as those of laboratory and of imageneology study, are reported. An electro-anatomical comparison permitted to verify the value of electrocardiographic signs of enlargement of the four heart chambers, due to a mixed overload. It permitted also to establish the value of the signs of the interatrial block, probably due to myocardial atrial fibrosis, and those suggesting hyperkalemia. The electrocardiogram always is very useful because it furnishes certain functional aspects permitting to allow structural infe

INTRODUCTION: Williams syndrome (WS) is a rare congenital disorder involving the cardiovascular system, connective tissue, and the central nervous system, resulting in mild to moderate mental retardation, a specific cognitive profile, unique personality characteristics, distinctive facial features, and cardiovascular disease. The majority of individuals with a clinical diagnosis of WS have a contiguous gene deletion at chromosome 7 (7q11.23). Physical features include characteristic facial features with full prominent cheeks, wide mouth, long philtrum, small nose with depressed nasal bridge, h

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in an 8-year-old boy with Williams syndrome is reported. Molecular DNA analysis showed a maternal deletion at 7q11.23, the locus of elastin and several other genes, including the BCL7B gene, involved in early development. To our knowledge, this is the second reported case of a lymphoma in a Williams syndrome patient and the first in a child.

Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a genetic disorder characterized by a distinctive facial gestalt, mental retardation, mild growth deficiency, and cardiovascular disease. The occurrence of sudden death in the WBS is known from several case reports, but information about the risk of sudden death as derived from the data of a large cohort of patients is lacking. We analyzed the data of 293 WBS patients who had been treated for 43 years at the same two institutions. We thus collected 5,190 patient years without loss to follow-up. During this period ten patients died. Five of them died from: reti

Williams Syndrome (WS), a neurodevelopmental genetic disorder, is characterized by peaks and valleys in mental function: substantial impairments in cognitive domains such as reasoning, arithmetic ability, and spatial cognition, alongside relatively preserved skills in social domains, face processing, language, and music. We report the results of a comprehensive survey on musical behaviors and background administered to the largest sample of individuals with WS to date (n = 118, mean age = 20.4), and compare the results to those obtained from a control group of typically developing normal indiv

Although much research has focused on the cognitive-linguistic profile associated with Williams syndrome, studies have yet to follow up on preliminary observations suggesting increased anxiety and fears in persons with this disorder. To this aim, Study 1 compared fears in 120 participants with Williams syndrome to 70 appropriately matched persons with mental retardation of mixed etiologies. Study 2 assessed differences in parent versus child reports of fears in 36 Williams syndrome and 24 comparison group parent-child dyads. In Study 3, rates of phobia and other anxiety disorders were assessed

One commonly observed neuroanatomical abnormality in adults with Williams syndrome is an enlarged cerebellum relative to a small cerebrum. Our study is the first to examine neuroanatomy in young children with Williams syndrome. Clinical brain MRI was examined in nine young children with Williams syndrome (mean age 21 months, range 7 to 43 months) relative to nine age- and sex-matched normally developing control children (mean age 29 months, range 20 to 42 months), and two children with undiagnosed developmental disorders (6 and 41 months). Two neuroradiologists who were blinded to participant

We experienced a case of 62-year-old woman who was admitted for the evaluation of her trembling hands. She was diagnosed as Williams syndrome (WS) by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis. She was short in stature, had a characteristic face and moderate mental retardation, whereas she was talkative and gregarious. She also presented impaired visuospatial cognition, cerebellar ataxia and tremor like involuntary movement of the hands. No remarkable abnormality is noted in MRI of the brain. MRA study of the brain revealed the arteriosclerotic vascular change, such as elongation of bas

Williams' syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic condition of autosomal dominant inheritance with varying penetrance, which consists of supravalvular aortic stenosis, a characteristic dysmorphic facies named "elf face", mental retardation and other clinical manifestations including transient infantile idiopathic hypercalcemia, growth retardation, and frequent dental problems. It usually presents sporadically, and there are only a few cases of family involvement reported in the literature. Recent studies show that mutations in the elastin gene at chromosome 7q11.23, which occur approximately in 90% of

This study describes the adjustment of 70 adults with Williams syndrome, in terms of self-help skills, independence, and occupational levels. Although the overall mean IQ of the group (62.00) was within the mild mental handicap range, relatively few individuals were able to attain a high level of independence or cope with the demands of employment. Adaptive behavior scores were significantly below chronological age. Outcome measures were compared with available data on other groups of adults of similar age and level of intellectual impairment. Implications for the community care of adults with

Karyotypic examinations were carried out in 10 children suffering from Williams-Beuren's syndrome. Chromosomal aberrations were established in two of the children. In one case the mosaic pattern of Klinefelter's syndrome was recorded, evidently presenting an instance of coincidence. In the other case deletion of the long arm of chromosome 6 (q22.2q23) was demonstrated, which according to the authors' hypothesis may represent an alternative localization of the phenotypic traits of Williams-Beuren's syndrome or of its assumed underlying defect, namely derangement of the regulation of calcium met

Down syndrome (DS) and Williams syndrome (WS) are genetic neurodevelopmental disorders associated with intellectual disability, showing contrasting linguistic profiles with asymmetries in grammatical (DS weakness/WS strength) vs. pragmatic abilities (DS strength/WS weakness). The aim of the present study was to explore the linguistic profiles of 14 adolescents with DS and WS, and 14 typically developing controls (matched by chronological and verbal age) by comparing the microstructure and macrostructure of narratives and their possible dissociation. Participants watched an episode of the Tom a

Prosody, the rhythm and melody of speech, is an important component of effective communication, and it is an area of difficulty for many populations who struggle with communication. This paper is a meta-analysis of nine studies (and two sets of unpublished data) that assessed prosody using the Profiling Elements of Prosody in Speech-Communication (PEPS-C; Peppé & McCann, 2003) in autism spectrum disorder, Williams syndrome, and Down syndrome. Our original goal was to include studies involving any neurodevelopmental disorder that is commonly associated with intellectual disability, yet our syst

The nature of the spatial representations that underlie simple visually guided actions early in life was investigated in toddlers with Williams syndrome (WS), Down syndrome (DS), and healthy chronological age- and mental age-matched controls, through the use of a "double-step" saccade paradigm. The experiment tested the hypothesis that, compared to typically developing infants and toddlers, and toddlers with DS, those with WS display a deficit in using spatial representations to guide actions. Levels of sustained attention were also measured within these groups, to establish whether difference

BACKGROUND: Emotional recognition is a key aspect of mentalizing other people's minds. People with Williams syndrome (WS) are reported to be hypersocial and empathetic; however, few studies have investigated their emotion processing ability.
AIMS: This study aimed to examine emotion knowledge in people with WS and to further understand their emotion-related mentalizing ability.
METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Six basic emotions (happiness, sadness, anger, fear, disgust, and surprise) were tested by narrating scenarios targeting specific emotions. Participants with WS (n = 16, 8F/8 M, CA = 8.46, MA =

Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a rare disorder caused by hemizygous microdeletion of ∼27 contiguous genes. Despite neurodevelopmental and cognitive deficits, individuals with WBS have spared or enhanced musical and auditory abilities, potentially offering an insight into the genetic basis of auditory perception. Here, we report that the mouse models of WBS have innately enhanced frequency-discrimination acuity and improved frequency coding in the auditory cortex (ACx). Chemogenetic rescue showed frequency-discrimination hyperacuity is caused by hyperexcitable interneurons in the ACx. Haploi

AIMS: We examined the relation between spelling ability and word-reading ability in children with Williams syndrome (WS).
METHODS: Eighty 9-17-year-olds with genetically-confirmed WS completed standardized tests of spelling, word reading, and intellectual ability; 45 also completed tests of phonological awareness and vocabulary. Reading instruction method was classified as Phonics or Other.
RESULTS: Spelling ability varied widely. Although at the group level, spelling standard scores (SSs) were significantly lower than word-reading SSs, at the individual level, this difference was significan

Celiac disease (CD) screening in patients with Williams-Beuren Syndrome (WBS) is suggested, although data described in literature are discordant regarding CD prevalence in WBS. We retrospectively collected data from 101 WBS Italian patients [mean age: 13.5 years], to clarify the CD prevalence in a large cohort. All patients underwent a CD biochemical screening: IgA and anti-transglutaminase reflex antibodies (tTGA). CD-specific HLA typing was available for 42 patients. Small intestinal biopsy was performed in patients according to ESPGHAN guidelines. In 7 WBS patients an overt celiac disease w

Williams-Beuren syndrome is the clinical manifestation of a congenital genetic disorder in the elastin gene, among others. There is a history of cardiac arrest refractory to resuscitation manoeuvres in anaesthesia. The incidence of myocardial ischaemia is high during anaesthetic induction, but there are patients who do not have this condition yet also have had very serious cardiac events, and issues that are still to be resolved. Case descriptions will enable the common pathophysiological factors to be defined, and decrease morbidity and mortality. We report the case of a 3-year-old boy with c
