Blood alcohol concentration is negatively associated with gambling money won on the Iowa gambling task in naturalistic settings after controlling for trait impulsivity and alcohol tolerance.

INTRODUCTION: Acute alcohol intoxication has been found to increase perseverative errors on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, a well known neuropsychological index of prefrontal cortical functioning, in both laboratory and naturalistic settings. METHOD: The present study examined the relationship between levels of alcohol consumption at campus drinking venues and performance of the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), another neuropsychological test designed to assess prefrontal cortex dysfunction, after controlling for potential confounding variables including habitual alcohol intake (as a proxy for alc

Increased frontoparietal activity related to lower performance in neuropsychological assessment of working memory.

Executive functions, including working memory, are typically assessed clinically with neuropsychological instruments. In contrast, computerized tasks are used to test these cognitive functions in laboratory human and animal studies. Little is known of how neural activity captured by laboratory tasks relates to ability measured by clinical instruments and, by extension, clinical diagnoses of pathological conditions. We therefore sought to determine what aspects of neural activity elicited in laboratory tasks are predictive of performance in neuropsychological instruments. We recorded neural act

A Comparison of Rapid Rule-Learning Strategies in Humans and Monkeys.

Interspecies comparisons are key to deriving an understanding of the behavioral and neural correlates of human cognition from animal models. We perform a detailed comparison of the strategies of female macaque monkeys to male and female humans on a variant of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), a widely studied and applied task that provides a multiattribute measure of cognitive function and depends on the frontal lobe. WCST performance requires the inference of a rule change given ambiguous feedback. We found that well-trained monkeys infer new rules three times more slowly than minimally

Response Inhibition, Cognitive Flexibility and Working Memory in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder.

This study analyzed response inhibition, cognitive flexibility and working memory in three groups of patients diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder and generalized anxiety disorder, considering some variables that may influence results (nonverbal reasoning, comorbidity, use of pharmacotherapy). Neuropsychological measures were completed using a computerized Wisconsin card sorting test, Stroop color word test, go/no-go task, digits and Corsi. Significant differences were obtained among groups in cognitive flexibility and working memory variables. The obsessive-co

Cognitive control deficits in pediatric frontal lobe epilepsy.

Executive dysfunction and behavioral problems are common in children with epilepsy. Inhibition and shifting, both aspects of cognitive control, seem related to behavior problems and are thought to be driven mainly by the frontal lobes. We investigated if inhibition and shifting deficits are present in children with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE). Secondly, we studied the relationship between these deficits and behavior problems. Thirty-one children were administered the Stroop Color Word Test and a digital version of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). Parents completed the Behavioral Rating

Cognitive impairment of executive function as a core symptom of schizophrenia.

Cognitive dysfunction is a common finding in schizophrenia. Nevertheless the specific pattern of neuropsychological impairment in schizophrenia compared to other severe mental illnesses has not been intensively studied. Twenty-four patients with schizophrenia belonging to different stages of the disease (11 first-episode patients, 13 patients with multiple episodes), 18 patients with bipolar disorder and 23 healthy control subjects underwent standardized neuropsychological assessment. Statistical analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) demonstrated that, compared to control subjects, patients with sch

Neuropsychological functioning in kleptomania.

Kleptomania is characterized by the failure to resist impulses to steal objects not needed for personal use or their monetary value. The objective of this study was to examine cognitive and executive functioning in subjects with kleptomania. Fifteen women with a primary DSM-IV diagnosis of kleptomania underwent a detailed psychiatric examination, including measures of kleptomania severity, and a battery of neuropsychological tests that emphasized executive functions. Correlational analyses were computed between measures of kleptomania severity and tests of executive functioning. Kleptomania su

Which factors predict cognitive decline in Parkinson's disease?

The study assessed cognitive decline in non-demented, non-depressed patients with well defined Parkinson's disease and determined the predictive value for cognitive decline of different motor symptoms. Motor disability was measured with the Unified Parkinson's disease rating scale, impairment in activities of daily living, levodopa test, and long term clinical follow up. Neuropsychological evaluations included modified mini mental state, fluency, Wechsler logical memory, Wisconsin card sorting test, and the Montgomery and Asberg depression rating scale. Fifty three patients fulfilling clinical

Assessment of Cognitive Functioning after Pallidotomy in Patients with Primary Dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic pallidotomy in the treatment of primary dystonia results in permanent damage to the posteroventral region of the internal globus pallidus. Lesions within the basal ganglia may change cognitive functioning. Subcortical structures interact with the frontal cortex, which plays an important role in cognition. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of stereotactic pallidotomy on cognitive function in patients with primary dystonia. METHODS: Thirty patients with primary dystonia who qualified for pallidotomy were tested 1-2 days before surgery, 2 days

Impaired cognitive functions in adult-onset primary cranial cervical dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Adult-onset primary dystonia is thought to be a purely motor disorder. Nevertheless, several studies provided evidence that sensory and psychiatric disturbances may contribute to the clinical spectrum of of dystonia, whereas evidence supporting cognitive impairment is still limited. METHODS: A set of neuropsychological tests was administered to non depressed, non demented patients with cranial-cervical dystonia and healthy control subjects. The test battery included n-Back Task, Wechsler Memory Scale, Trail Making Test version A and B, and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. RESULTS: As
