[Historical Development of the Wool and Colour Plate Tests for Screening for Colour Vision Deficiencies in German Speaking Countries].

Colour vision is a complex visual function that can be affected by congenital and/or acquired disorders. The frequency of congenital colour vision deficiencies has been investigated in rail and navy staff since the 1870s. Various test methods have been developed. Wool tests, flor contrast tests and colour plate tests have been used. A published colour plate test, based on Stilling's pseudo-isochromatic plates in combination with a flor contrast test, has been a common screening method for colour vision testing in German-speaking countries. This test is intended to detect congenital and acquire

Retarded and excessive development of skin appendages in fetal lambs in response to thyroidectomy before wool follicle appearance.

The impact on wool follicles of development in an athyroid environment was studied in a series of twin fetal lambs by surgically thyroidectomizing one of each pair before the appearance of follicle buds and comparing development of epidermal appendages in it with their development in the normal co-twin. Thyroidectomy was undertaken at 51 to 54 days' gestation, i.e. after approximately one-third of the gestation period. Each treated fetus was then replaced in the uterus, allowing pregnancy to continue. Eight pairs of twins were removed at intervals from 67 to 122 days' gestation and skin sample

Alkaline earth silicate (AES) wools: Evaluation of potential cyto-genotoxic and inflammatory effects on human respiratory cells.

Biosoluble AES wools are increasingly used since considered not hazardous, however, few toxicity studies are available. We evaluated cytotoxic, genotoxic-oxidative and inflammatory effects of two differently soluble AES wools, AES1 (high MgO percentage) and AES2 (high CaO percentage), on alveolar (A549) and bronchial (BEAS-2B) cells. Fiber dimensions and dissolution in cell media were evaluated by SEM analysis. Cell viability, LDH release, direct/oxidative DNA damage (fpg-comet assay) and IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α release (ELISA), were analysed after 24 h exposure to 2-200 μg/ml. On A549 cells AES1

Increased control of the sheep biting louse Bovicola (Damalinia) ovis with deltamethrin formulated in a fractionated wool grease carrier.

The synthetic pyrethroid deltamethrin (DM) containing a trace of [(14)C]-DM was formulated with non-oxidised sterol and wax ester fractions (F1) of wool grease and as the commercial preparation 'Clout-S'. These were applied as a 'backline' strip to sheep immediately after shearing and the concentration of [(14)C]-DM at meridians adjacent to the application strip and at 1/4 and 3/4 of the dorsal-ventral distance was determined. The F1 formulation resulted in significantly greater lateral spread of DM with less remaining at the application site (66+/-8% of dose) 98 days after treatment compared

Investigation of Toxoplasma gondii Infection in Yunnan Semi-fine Wool Sheep (Ovis aries) and wild Rodents in Yunnan, China.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii, a globally distributed zoonotic obligate intracellular parasite, infects a wide array of mammals, including humans, sheep, and birds. As a unique sheep breed in southwestern China, Yunnan semi-fine wool sheep occupies an important position in animal husbandry in Zhaotong due to its strong adaptability, high reproductive rate, and excellent wool quality. Lambs infected with T. gondii are prone to neurological symptoms and growth retardation, while T. gondii infection in ewes can cause abortions, stillbirths, and deformities, thus affecting sheep reproduction and s

Genome-Wide SNP Characterisation of Three Kazakh Sheep Breeds: Kazakh Fat-Tailed Coarse-Wool, Degeres, and Etti Merino.

Kazakhstan's sheep portfolio underpins much of the country's mutton and wool production, yet several of its principal breeds remain genomically uncharacterised. The aim of this study was to characterise the genomic diversity, population structure, and global phylogenetic placement of three economically important Kazakh breeds and to determine whether they constitute separate gene pools requiring independent management. We present the first genome-wide SNP characterisation to include the Degeres (DE), the Etti Merino (EM), and the Kazakh fat-tailed coarse-wool (KKG) breeds simultaneously. A tot

Rapid Glass Wool Enrichment of Glycopeptides for MALDI-MS Analysis of Immunoglobulin G Glycosylation in COVID-19 Samples.

Glycosylation is the most common protein post-translational modification, affecting protein properties and functions. Abnormal variations in glycosylation are associated with diseases, e.g., coronavirus disease COVID-19. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry has been widely utilized for studying protein glycosylation, after proper purification of glycopeptides or glycans using hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) or laboratory-synthesized hydrophilic materials. Here, glass wool tips were developed to enrich immunoglobulin G glycopeptides and applied in

Development and evaluation of a gelatin-integrated wool hydrogel dressing for enhanced wound healing using in vitro and in vivo models.

Hydrogel-based advanced wound dressings promote rapid healing by creating a moist environment and protecting against contamination. However, pure hydrogel often lacks strength, flexibility, and wearer comfort for practical clinical use. To address these limitations, this study developed a gelatin hydrogel reinforced with wool fibrous nonwoven. The addition of wool fibers improved thermal comfort, structural integrity, and overall performance of the hydrogel system. Using a sol-gel technique, wool nonwovens with different areal densities (100-300 g/m2) were incorporated into gelatin matrices at

Hair and wool of ruminants and canines as environmental vectors of Bacillus anthracis and potential human exposure in anthrax-endemic regions.

Anthrax is an endemic and persistent zoonotic disease in Pakistan. This fact emphasizes the need for surveillance in high-risk endemic regions. The aim of this study was to assess the role of wool and hair of ruminants and canines in the transmission of Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax, and to evaluate the exposure to anthrax in asymptomatic animals and humans. Samples from five districts were analyzed using microscopic methods, culture methods (on both PLET and blood agars) and PCR. Additionally, to check the exposure, ELISA was performed on animals and human samples. Intere

Liquid phase microextraction using knitting wool as the extractant phase holder before chromatographic analysis: a new approach for trace analysis.

In this paper, a novel liquid phase microextraction (LPME) approach was developed in which a piece of knitting wool was used as the extractant solvent holder. Owing to the absorbability of the wool, the extractant could be easily held within the material. When the wool containing the organic solvent was exposed to the sample solution, analytes could directly diffuse from the sample solution to the solvent. Ultraviolet (UV) filters ([2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone (BP-1), benzophenone (BP) and 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone (BP-3)]) were used as model analytes to evaluate the procedure. Parameters

Mild Acid-Assisted Separation and Closed-Loop Monomer-Level Regeneration of Polyamide 6 from Waste Wool/PA6 Carpet Blends.

Efficient component separation is a prerequisite for high-value recycling of blended textile waste. Herein, a two-stage metal-free recycling process for wool/polyamide 6 (PA6) carpet waste is developed, combining mild acid-assisted selective separation with monomer-level PA6 regeneration. Acetic acid pretreatment at 80 °C removes surface dyes, followed by formic acid treatment for selective PA6 dissolution. Both acids are efficiently recyclable via low-temperature rotary evaporation, with an average PA6 recovery yield over 75% across five consecutive cycles. Recovered wool preserves its origin
