Reading difficulties are a complex set of disorders. Current research indicates that these disorders are not caused by vision abnormalities. Treatment of these disorders requires a multidisciplinary approach involving educators, psychologists, and physicians. Parents, physicians, and school officials should understand that there are no quick cures for these children.

This study investigated how deficits in orthographic processing affect movement production during word writing. Children with dyslexia and dysgraphia wrote words and pseudo-words on a digitizer. The words were orthographically regular and irregular of varying frequency. The group analysis revealed that writing irregular words and pseudo-words increased movement duration and dysfluency. This indicates that the spelling processes were active while the children were writing the words. The impact of these spelling processes was stronger for the children with dyslexia and dysgraphia. The analysis o

Spatiotemporal maps of brain activity based on magnetoencephalography were used to observe sequential stages in language processing and their modification during repetition priming. Subjects performed word-stem completion and produced either novel or repeated (primed) words across trials. Activation passes from primary visual cortex (activated at approximately 100 msec after word presentation), to left anteroventral occipital ( approximately 180 msec), to cortex in and near Wernicke's ( approximately 210 msec) and then Broca's ( approximately 370 msec) areas. In addition, a posteroventral temp

BACKGROUND: Reading activity involves visual processing in nature. Compared with hearing people, visual processing may be more critical for deaf people. However, much less research has explored the impact of visual processing on the reading ability of deaf children, and the mechanism underlying this relationship is unclear.
AIMS: This study aimed to examine whether and how visual processing skills predict reading ability in elementary school deaf children in China.
METHODS AND PROCEDURES: A total of 118 Chinese deaf children (mean age = 14.60 years) from grades 4-6 were tested on the tasks o

HYPOTHESES: 1) Scores of reading efficiency (the Test of Word Reading Efficiency, second edition) obtained in adults before cochlear implant surgery will be predictive of speech recognition outcomes 6 months after surgery; and 2) Cochlear implantation will lead to improvements in language processing as measured through reading efficiency from preimplantation to postimplantation.
BACKGROUND: Adult cochlear implant (CI) users display remarkable variability in speech recognition outcomes. "Top-down" processing-the use of cognitive resources to make sense of degraded speech-contributes to speech

In most healthy adult humans, the right ventro-occipital temporal cortex (vOTC) is more involved in face perception than its left-hemisphere counterpart. Several hypotheses link this right-lateralization for face processing to left-lateralization of language and visual word form processing. In its strongest form, this account assumes an encroachment by word form processing into left vOTC territory that would otherwise be dedicated to face processing, causing face processing that would otherwise be bilateral to rely relatively more on right vOTC. By this logic, if visual word recognition came t

Individuals with dyslexia show deficits in phonological abilities, rapid automatized naming, short-term/working memory, processing speed, and some aspects of sensory and visual processing. There is currently one report in the literature that individuals with dyslexia also show impairments in linguistic prediction. The current study sought to investigate prediction in language processing in dyslexia. Forty-one adults with dyslexia and 43 typically-developing controls participated. In the experiment, participants made speeded-acceptability judgements in sentences with word final cloze manipulati

Although word recognition is a skill commonly expected to rely more on ventral rather than dorsal stream processing, there is some evidence for a magnocellular/dorsal impairment in dyslexia. The early rapid feedforward/feedback loop through the dorsal stream seen in primate has been suggested to allow an initial global analysis, and in human early activation of parietal attention mechanisms for detecting salient stimuli, facilitating more local level detailed ventral stream processing. To test this model in humans, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to probe the role of early vis

BACKGROUND: Some individuals exhibit symptoms that resemble schizophrenia, but these manifestations are less in the degree to those seen in schizophrenia. Such a latent personality construct has been called schizotypy. It is known that schizotypal personality traits have an impact on cognitive control and semantic processing. The present study aimed to examine whether visual verbal information processing is modulated by enhancement of top-down processes applied to different words within one phrase in subjects with schizotypal personality traits. The tasks employed were based on differences in

Developmental dyslexia is a severe reading disorder, which is characterized by dysfluent reading and impaired automaticity of visual word processing. Adults with dyslexia show functional deficits in several brain regions including the so-called "Visual Word Form Area" (VWFA), which is implicated in visual word processing and located within the larger left occipitotemporal VWF-System. The present study examines functional connections of the left occipitotemporal VWF-System with other major language areas in children with dyslexia. Functional connectivity MRI was used to assess connectivity of t

The finding that visual processing of a word correlates with the number of its letters has an extensive history. In healthy subjects, a variety of methods, including perceptual thresholds, naming and lexical decision times, and ocular motor parameters, show modest effects that interact with high-order effects like frequency. Whether this indicates serial processing of letters under some conditions or indexes low-level visual factors related to word length is unclear. Word-length effects are larger in pure alexia, where they probably reflect a serial letter-by-letter strategy, due to failure of

Purpose The purpose of our study was to test the hypotheses (a) that children with dyslexia have spoken word learning deficits primarily related to phonology and (b) that children with dyslexia and concomitant developmental language disorder (DLD) have word learning deficits related to both phonology and semantic processing when compared to peers with typical development (TD). Method Second-graders with dyslexia (n = 82), concomitant dyslexia and DLD (dyslexia + DLD; n = 40), and TD (n = 167) learned names and semantic features for cartoon monsters in 5 carefully controlled word learning tasks

The diagnosis of letter-by-letter (LBL) dyslexia is based on the observation of a substantial and monotonic increase of word naming latencies as the number of letters in the stimulus increases. This pattern of performance is typically interpreted as indicating that word recognition in LBL dyslexia depends on the sequential identification of individual letters. We show, in 7 LBL patients, that the word-length effect can be eliminated if words of different lengths are matched on the sum of the confusability (visual similarity between a letter and the remainder of the alphabet) of their constitue

INTRODUCTION: Chinese text does not mark word boundaries with spaces, requiring readers to rely on statistical cues within character strings for word segmentation and lexical recognition. Morpheme positional probability (MPP), defined as the likelihood that a morpheme occurs in the initial or final position of a two-character word, is one such cue. However, it remains unclear how L2 learners of Chinese use initial and final MPP and whether this use is modulated by whole-word frequency.
METHODS: Using a controlled sentence-reading eye-tracking task, this study compared native Chinese readers,

Twenty-one dyslexic children, ages 9-15, were administered a battery of tests on two occasions separated by 2 years to assess the development of word recognition and spelling. The majority of the subjects were receiving intensive small-group instruction and one-on-one tutoring in reading and writing. Correlational and regression analyses supported the assumption that phonological and orthographic processing are distinct but reciprocally related components of word recognition and spelling. However, phonological skill appeared to capture most of the unique variance in word identification for dys

Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome characterized by an insidious onset and gradual progression of deficits that can involve any aspect of language, including word finding, object naming, fluency, syntax, phonology and word comprehension. The initial symptoms occur in the absence of major deficits in other cognitive domains, including episodic memory, visuospatial abilities and visuoconstruction. According to recent diagnostic guidelines, PPA is typically divided into three variants: nonfluent variant PPA (also termed progressive nonfluent aphasia), semantic varia

Developmental dyslexia is a specific learning disorder with impairments in reading and spelling acquisition. Apart from literacy problems, dyslexics show inefficient speech encoding and deficient novel word learning, with underlying problems in phonological processing and learning. These problems have been suggested to be related to deficient specialization of the left hemisphere for language processing. To examine this possibility, we tracked with magnetoencephalography (MEG) the activation of the bilateral temporal cortices during formation of neural memory traces for new spoken word forms i

Fillers, such as uh and um in English, are reliable predictors of upcoming novelty, and listeners harness these statistics to process disfluent speech efficiently. Predictive processing begets prediction error, and therefore it is possible that fillers impact word learning when they precede unexpected referents. However, the effect of fillers on word learning is unknown, especially over different time scales. Across five experiments, we sought to investigate the impact of fillers on language processing and learning, focusing on the relationship between fillers and predictive processing. Follow

In this article, we explore the relationship between rapid automatized naming (RAN) and other cognitive processes among below-average, average, and above-average readers and spellers. Nonsense word reading, phonological awareness, RAN, automaticity of balance, speech perception, and verbal short-term and working memory were measured. Factor analysis revealed a 3-component structure. The first component included phonological processing tasks, RAN, and motor balance. The second component included verbal short-term and working memory tasks. Speech perception loaded strongly as a third component,
