Case of cerebellar ataxia successfully treated by virtual reality-guided rehabilitation.

A male patient in his 40s was transferred to our hospital for rehabilitation of ataxia after right cerebellar and brainstem infarction. After 3 weeks of conventional physical therapy, his activities of daily life successfully improved with an increase in the functional impedance measure from 101 to 124. However, he still fell short of gaining a higher level of balance function, which was necessary for his job as a standup forklift driver. We introduced virtual reality-guided balance training. The training was performed for approximately 40 min on weekdays for 2 weeks. As a result, the Scale fo

Experiences of Being Significant Others to Older Adults with Frailty Living Alone in Rural Arctic Norway: A Qualitative Study.

PURPOSE: Our aim in this study was to explore how significant others experience being "significant" to older adults living alone with frailty in rural Arctic areas in northern Norway. The proportion of older adults in the population is larger and growing faster in rural- than in urban areas. Due to out-migration of the younger generations, many significant others live far from the older adults. METHODS: Our results are based on a thematic analysis of semistructured interviews with ten persons identified as significant others by older adults in rural Arctic Norway. RESULTS: The analysis resul

Supporting Police Well-Being Through an Adaptive Shift Management System: Co-Design Study.

BACKGROUND: Police personnel work under challenging conditions commonly associated with complex shift patterns, unpredictable last-minute changes, and high stress levels, with shift work identified as the major contributor to police personnel health and well-being challenges. These challenges negatively impact their mental well-being, physical health, and job performance, leading to potential health concerns such as fatigue, poor sleep, long-term physical disabilities, anxiety, and poor work-life balance. Existing digital interventions fail to address the needs of shift workers due to focusing

The causal effect of workplace violence on mental health and work-related outcomes: a cross-sectional study using propensity score matching.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of workplace violence in healthcare is 50-60%. While it has been linked to decreased job satisfaction, diminished quality of care, and economic burdens on healthcare systems, there are still major gaps. Previous studies ignored the Latin American perspective. Moreover, they neither offered causal evidence nor measured its impact on psychological outcomes. The objective was to evaluate the impact of workplace violence on psychological and work-related outcomes. METHODS: A secondary analysis of Peru's 2016 National Healthcare Satisfaction Survey was conducted. This

Perturbation training to promote safe independent mobility post-stroke: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Falls are one of the most common medical complications post-stroke. Physical exercise, particularly exercise that challenges balance, reduces the risk of falls among healthy and frail older adults. However, exercise has not proven effective for preventing falls post-stroke. Falls ultimately occur when an individual fails to recover from a loss of balance. Thus, training to specifically improve reactive balance control could prevent falls. Perturbation training aims to improve reactive balance control by repeatedly exposing participants to postural perturbations. There is emerging e

Challenges and barriers to women's leadership in medical research and how to prevent and overcome them.

Despite increasing participation of women in medical research, their representation in senior leadership positions remains limited. This study aimed to describe career experiences, perceived barriers, and institutional challenges reported by senior women scientists working in academic medical research in Italy. A national cross-sectional survey was conducted using a structured 33-item questionnaire administered to a selected cohort of senior medical researchers with an h-index greater than or equal to 60 working in universities and research institutes (TIWS-Top Italian Women Scientists). What type of worker are you? Work-related Inventory (WI-10): A comprehensive instrument for the measurement of workaholism.

BACKGROUND: In literature, there are many instruments for evaluating workaholism; however, they do not have convergent validity, because of the lack of a shared definition of workaholism. OBJECTIVE: We propose a new instrument for evaluating workaholism and work engagement, namely the Work-related Inventory (WI-10), which is based on Loscalzo and Giannini's (2017) comprehensive definition of workaholism. METHODS: We developed a pool of 36 items, covering: 1) addiction symptoms; 2) obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and 3) work engagement. Then, we conducted Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor an

Occupational burnout during war: The role of stress, disruptions in routine, sleep, work-family conflict, and organizational support as a moderator.

BACKGROUND: Occupational burnout, resulting from long-term exposure to work-related stressors, is a significant risk factor for both physical and mental health of employees. Most research on burnout focuses on routine situations, with less attention given to its causes and manifestations during prolonged national crises such as war. According to the Conservation of Resources theory, wartime conditions are associated with a loss of resources, leading to accelerated burnout. This study aimed to examine burnout among employees during the war in Israel that broke out in October 2023, placing the p
