Longitudinal changes in working conditions and quality of life before and after implementation of work style reform among orthopedic surgeons.

BACKGROUND: In Japan, a nationwide physician work style reform was implemented in April 2024 to regulate overtime hours and improve physicians' working conditions. Orthopedic surgeons represent a high-risk group for occupational burnout due to physically demanding procedures and frequent emergency duties; however, longitudinal evidence on the reform's real-world impact in this population remains limited. METHODS: This longitudinal observational study included 79 full-time orthopedic surgeons affiliated with a university-affiliated hospital network who completed paired surveys in 2023 (pre-ref

How "Conditions of Confinement" Impact "Conditions of Employment": The Work-Related Well-Being of Provincial Correctional Officers in Atlantic Canada.

Internationally, researchers studying correctional officer (CO) work have examined CO self-presentation, staff-prisoner relationships, and emotional labor. We build on this research by drawing on occupational literature to examine officer mental health outcomes that result from correctional work. We examine the impact of working in prison on COs' well-being, paying particular attention to aspects of the work content (operational stressors) and context (organizational stressors). In conducting semi-structured interviews with COs in Atlantic Canada, we found that COs identified a number of opera

Vulnerability profiles of workers and the relation with burnout symptoms: results from the Netherlands working conditions survey.

INTRODUCTION: Unfavorable working conditions may place workers in a vulnerable position in the labour market, but studies on the clustering of these factors and their relation to burnout symptoms are lacking. This study aims to identify subgroups of workers in potentially vulnerable positions in the labour market and examine whether burnout symptoms differ across the established subgroups. METHODS: This study utilizes cross-sectional data from 2019 of the Netherlands Working Conditions Survey (n = 55,283). Working conditions included employment contracts, working hours, multiple jobs, tenure,

Handler training improves decontamination of working canines with oil-based exposure in field conditions using disposable kits.

Exposure to contaminants in the field is a reality for deployed canines. To date, there is no data evaluating the benefits of training for handlers associated with canine decontamination efforts. The objective of our work was to investigate the impact of handler training on the reduction of oil-based contaminants in working canines. Canine teams (n = 10) were randomly assigned to either TRAINED or UNTRAINED groups. Each team (handler and dog) in the TRAINED group received 30-minutes of interactive training using an illustrated guide on proper utilization of equipment provided. Teams in the UNT

Measurement of protection factors of chemical cartridge, half-mask respirators under working conditions in a copper smelter.

The performance of three commonly used chemical cartridge respirators for SO2 was measured under working conditions in a copper smelter. An effective SO2 protection factor for each man-respirator trial was calculated as the ratio between average SO2 concentrations sampled outside the respirator mask and that simultaneously sampled from inside the mask. The in-use SO2 protection afforded by the three respirators proved to be highly variable with mean protection factors of 22, 18, and 13. The distributions of the protection factors and the effects of mask type, facial size, and mask comfort are

Association between educational attainment and mental health conditions among Africans working and studying in selected African countries.

Mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and stress, are a growing global public health concern, with their prevalence influenced by various sociodemographic and contextual factors. Among these, the role of educational attainment in shaping mental health outcomes has received limited attention, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Given the potential impact of education on psychological well-being, this study examines the prevalence of mental health conditions. It explores how different levels of education influence depression, anxiety, and stress among university students

A team without a name: emergency medicine recognition and its impact on working conditions and well-being.

Emergency medicine (EM) has evolved significantly over the past 50 years, transitioning from a focus on acute injuries and illnesses to include primary and specialty care, disaster response, and social issues. To date, nearly 60 countries have officially recognized EM as a medical specialty. However, growing patient demands, healthcare staff shortages, and an aging population have strained emergency departments, worsening working conditions for EM professionals and compromising patient care. To address these challenges, formal recognition of EM as a specialty is crucial. As a specialty, EM offe

Working Conditions and Wellbeing among Prison Nurses during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Comparison to Community Nurses.

The psychological health and work challenges of nurses working in prisons during the COVID-19 pandemic are understudied. We evaluated the work and wellbeing characteristics of a California prison nurse group, with a comparison to those of a community nurse group. From May to November 2020, an online survey measured psychosocial and organizational work factors, sleep habits, psychological characteristics, COVID-19 impacts, and pre-pandemic recall among 62 prison nurses and 47 community nurses. Prison nurses had significantly longer work hours (54.73 ± 14.52, p < 0.0001), higher pandemic-related

Precarious employment and self-reported experiences of unwanted sexual attention and sexual harassment at work. An analysis of the European Working Conditions Survey.

Unwanted sexual attention (UWSA) and sexual harassment (SH) are prevalent experiences for women in working life and often accompanied by poor health. Despite increasing numbers especially of young people working in insecure and irregular employment settings, there is little empirical evidence if such precarious arrangements are associated with UWSA or SH. To investigate this, we used a representative sample of the European working population consisting of 63,966 employees in 33 countries who participated in the European Working Conditions Survey in 2010 or 2015. Precarious employment (PE) was
