First detection of Onchocerca lupi infection in dogs in southern Spain.

BACKGROUND: Onchocerca lupi causes ocular pathology of varying severity in dogs from south-western United States, western Europe and northern Asia. This filarioid has also been recognized as a zoonotic agent in Tunisia, Turkey, Iran and the USA, though the information about the biology and epidemiology of this infection is largely unknown. In Europe, O. lupi has been reported in dogs from Germany, Greece, Hungary, Portugal and Romania and in a cat from Portugal. The present study was designed to establish the occurrence of O. lupi in dogs in southwestern Spain. In the present study a total of

Serological reactivity to Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in dogs and horses from distinct areas in Romania.

Lyme disease is a perfect model of the complex relationship between host, vector, and the vector-borne bacteria. Both dogs and horses in Romania are exposed to infection. The aim of the present study was to assess the seroreactivity against Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in dogs and horses from different regions of Romania. 276 samples from dogs and 260 samples from horses located in different regions of Romania were analyzed by ELISA and IFA, respectively. The effect of several factors potentially affecting seroreactivity (location, age, gender, occupation, and vector exposition risk) was ev

Molecular and serological detection of Ehrlichia canis and Babesia vogeli in dogs in Colombia.

Ehrlichiosis and babesiosis are tick-borne diseases, caused mainly by Ehrlichia canis and Babesia canis, respectively, with a worldwide occurrence in dogs, whose main vector is the brown-dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus. The present work aimed to detect the presence of E. canis and Babesia sp. in 91 dog blood samples in Colombia, by molecular and serological techniques. We also performed sequence alignment to indicate the identity of the parasite species infecting these animals. The present work shows the first molecular detection of E. canis and B. vogeli in dogs from Colombia. Immunoglobul

Aujeszky's disease in hunting dogs after the ingestion of wild boar raw meat in Sicily (Italy): clinical, diagnostic and phylogenetic features.

BACKGROUND: Aujeszky's disease is caused by Suid Herpes Virus-1 and species belonging to the genus Sus scrofa are the main reservoir hosts. This virus, however, is capable of infecting and causing severe disease, with an almost constant fatal outcome in other species, both domestic and wild (carnivores, monogastric herbivores and ruminants). Moreover, the possibility of transmission to humans has been demonstrated. This study reports and describes the clinical, diagnostic, pathological and phylogenetic aspects of two cases of Aujeszky's disease in two hunting dogs following the ingestion of in

Comparative physiological responses to exercise stress.

We determined the effect of exhaustive exercise on the acid-base balance, O2 consumption, and cardiac output in dogs and pigs to examine which species was comparable with humans in its physiological response to exercise. We ran 11 dogs and 11 pigs on a motor-driven treadmill at steady-state (heart rate 75% maximum) and exhaustive (maximum heart rate) exercise levels. Measuring heart rate, cardiac output, and aortic pressure via implanted probes we obtained arterial and venous blood samples before, during, and after exercise to determine hematocrit, blood gas tensions, pH, and lactic acid level

Lymphocyte 5'-nucleotidase activities in normal dogs and in dogs with malignant lymphoma.

Plasma membrane 5'-nucleotidase (5'NT) activity was assayed in lymph node lymphocytes from seven normal control dogs and in malignant lymphocytes from 25 dogs with lymphoma. The lymphoid tumors were classified according to the NCI Working Formulation into five histologic subtypes. When compared with normal controls significantly lower 5'NT activities were found in the lymphoblastic, small lymphocytic and diffuse large (noncleaved) subtypes while no significant differences were observed in the immunoblastic or small noncleaved groups. In addition, dogs with hypercalcemia or paraproteinemia had

Signalment changes in canine leptospirosis between 1970 and 2009.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have identified large breed, male, outdoor dogs of herding or working groups to be at increased risk for Leptospira infection. Exposure risk factors may change over time, altering the signalment of dogs most commonly diagnosed with leptospirosis. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to evaluate possible signalment changes by decade in canine leptospirosis cases diagnosed at university veterinary hospitals in the United States and Canada using reports to the Veterinary Medical DataBase (VMDB) over a 40-year period (1970-2009). ANIMALS: One thousand and ni

Head-mounted mobile eye-tracking in the domestic dog: A new method.

Humans rely on dogs for countless tasks, ranging from companionship to highly specialized detection work. In their daily lives, dogs must navigate a human-built visual world, yet comparatively little is known about what dogs visually attend to as they move through their environment. Real-world eye-tracking, or head-mounted eye-tracking, allows participants to freely move through their environment, providing more naturalistic results about visual attention while interacting with objects and agents. In dogs, real-world eye-tracking has the potential to inform our understanding of cross-species c

Anaplasma phagocytophilum in dogs in Germany.

A total number of 111 dogs were included in the present prospective study investigating the prevalence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum in dogs in Germany. Dogs were divided into two groups. Dogs of group 1 (n = 49) showed clinical and/or haematological signs seen in infections with A. phagocytophilum, whereas those of group 2 (n = 62) did not have any evidence of anaplasmosis. For each dog, an A. phagocytophilum 16S rRNA-nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-anticoagulated whole blood analysis, a microscopic evaluation of a buffy coat and a serum indirec

Contribution of the dog to the science of nutrition.

In the 19th century when the basic principles of nutrition were established, the main work was done first in France and then in Germany. In each country dogs were the overwhelming choice as the model experimental animal. In France the complexity of nutritional requirements first came to be appreciated and the inadequacy of gelatin as a substitute for muscle protein was identified. In Germany quantitative balance procedures for nutrients were developed and it was shown that balance could be achieved at many levels after a period of adaptation. In the U.S.A. at the beginning of this century, Rus

Efficacy of ivermectin to control Strongyloides stercoralis infection in sheltered dogs.

In dogs, information on treatments against S. stercoralis infection is rare and anecdotal. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the treatment outcome of S. stercoralis natural infection in sheltered dogs. Furthermore, based on the potential risk of infection, people working in the infected shelter were also tested. Seventeen sheltered dogs positive to S. stercoralis using the Baermann test were treated with ivermectin 200 μg/kg/sid/os for two consecutive days. Only two dogs showed clinical signs suggestive of strongyloidiasis (diarrhea, weigh loss) at diagnosis. All dogs showed consiste

PTSD assistance dogs: concerns for animal well-being, rights, and justice.

PTSD assistance dogs are service dogs trained to assist individuals living with PTSD. A growing body of research links the use of PTSD assistance dogs with substantial benefits for their human partners, including significant reductions in PTSD symptoms, and improvements in family functioning, social integration, and quality of life. However, research on the effect of assistance work on PTSD assistance dogs themselves is notably lacking. This paper aims to address this gap by mapping potential animal welfare and ethical concerns associated with PTSD assistance dog interventions. Moreover, a rig

Dogs Entering the United States from Rabies-Endemic Countries, 2011-2012.

International dog imports pose a risk because of the potential movement of disease agents, including the canine rabies virus variant which has been eliminated from the United States since 2007. US regulations require a rabies vaccination certificate for dogs arriving from rabies-endemic countries, but permit the importation of dogs that have not been adequately immunized against rabies, provided that the dogs are confined under conditions that restrict their contact with humans and other animals until they have been immunized. CDC Form 75.37, 'Notice to Owners and Importers of Dogs', explains

Physiological Assessment of Muscle, Heart, and Whole Body Function in the Canine Model of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a lethal muscle disease caused by dystrophin deficiency. Patients gradually lose motor function, become wheelchair-bound, and die from respiratory and/or cardiac muscle failure. Dystrophin-null dogs have been used as a large animal model for DMD since 1988 and are considered an excellent bridge between rodent models and human patients. While numerous protocols have been published for studying muscle and heart physiology in mice, few such protocols exist for studying skeletal muscle contractility, heart function, and whole-body activity in dogs. Frequency of DEA 1 antigen in 1037 mongrel and PUREBREED dogs in ITALY.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of dog erythrocyte antigen (DEA 1) in canine population is approximately 40-60%. Often data are limited to a small number of breeds and/or dogs. The aims of this study were to evaluate frequency of DEA 1 in a large population of purebred and mongrel dogs including Italian native breeds and to recognize a possible association between DEA 1 and breed, sex, and genetic and phenotypical/functional classifications of breeds. Frequencies of DEA 1 blood group collected from screened/enrolled blood donors and from healthy and sick dogs were retrospectively evaluated. The bre
