Neurotological findings after electrical injury at the workplace.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Neurotological findings secondary to electrical injuries have rarely been reported in the world literature. We attempt to characterize the neurotological findings following electrical injury and to determine the role head injury and loss of consciousness play in this population's clinical presentation. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: A database containing 3,438 patients with work-related injuries was scanned for individuals who sustained and survived electrical injuries at work. Detailed analysis of the frequencies of presenting features and test res

The "Big C"-stigma, cancer, and workplace discrimination.

PURPOSE: Stigma and workplace discrimination have been identified as prominent challenges to employment following cancer. However, there has been limited examination of how stigma develops in work contexts and how it influences cancer survivors' return to work process and their disclosure decisions. METHODS: In the broader study from which this paper emerges, we used an exploratory qualitative design to examine the return to work process (including workplace supports and accommodations) of cancer survivors. We conducted 40 semi-structured interviews with (i) cancer survivors (n = 16), (ii) he

Patch testing custom isocyanate materials from the workplace.

BACKGROUND: Patch testing with standard trays of commercially available allergens is the current practice for investigating suspected cases of isocyanate-induced allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). In some facilities, these standard trays are further supplemented with custom preparations of isocyanate-containing materials. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to determine whether added value exists in patch testing patients to custom isocyanate preparations in suspected cases of ACD. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 11 patients referred to our specialty clinic between January 2003 and Marc

Measuring workplace social support for workers with disability.

INTRODUCTION: Social support in the workplace has been has been demonstrated to serve as a contributor to a worker's ability to manage work demands and to manage stress. Research in the area of disability management indicates that interpersonal factors play an important role in the success of return-to-work interventions. The role of workplace support has received limited attention in rehabilitation, despite the salience of support to the disability management process. Prior to this study, there existed no validated quantitative measure of social support for workers who re-enter the workplace

Running on empty: families, time, and workplace injuries.

Over the past 5 decades, more women have entered the labor force, and more households have been headed by single parents. Both trends have substantially reduced parents' free time, creating added strain in the event of family health problems, including work-related injuries and illnesses. This commentary presents evidence about the impact of occupational injuries on today's families. In addition to losing considerable income, injured parents are less able to do household work, and other family members are often called on to care for them. Family members cut back on their paid, school, and hous

Social support in the workplace: nurse leader implications.

The state of the science as it relates to the stress-mediating role of social support in the health care work environment is explored. The ability to build a nursing leadership workforce is dependent upon a type of social support mechanism that mediates the inherent stress that comes along with managerial positions. Independent of the inevitable work-related stress associated with the nurse manager role, social support provided to current and aspiring nurse leaders is assumed to assist with coping and thriving in the work environment.

[Lipoid pneumonia related to workplace exposure to paint].

A 49-year-old man with no known history of pulmonary disease was treated at our hospital after observation of an interstitial pattern on a chest film. The patient was a smoker and professional painter. Computed tomography of the chest showed a diffuse bilateral ground-glass pattern. The lung biopsy showed intra-alveolar lipid accumulation in the form of vacuoles of varying sizes surrounded by numerous focally multinucleated macrophages, establishing a definitive diagnosis of exogenous lipoid pneumonia. Given the patient's profession, he was recommended to avoid workplace exposure to paraffins

Workplace-related chronic cough on a mushroom farm.

BACKGROUND: Mushroom spores have frequently been associated with respiratory allergy. The aims of this study were to elucidate the incidence and causes of chronic cough in a mushroom farm. We excluded six workers because they had had asthma or allergic rhinitis before working. Participants completed a cross-sectional health survey 2 years after starting work at the mushroom farm. RESULTS: The mean airborne endotoxin levels in the harvesting and packing rooms were approximate

Supporting the elderly: workplace programs for employed caregivers.

An aging population and extended longevity are increasing the number of older people needing informal and family support. At the same time, women, the traditional caregivers, have entered the work force in record numbers. Consequently, concerns about how to care for dependent family members have become workplace issues. In response to the needs of employees who care for family members, employers have produced an array of policies, benefits, and programs, including flexible work schedules and information and referral services. Although these programs are a valuable complement to community servi

Diagnosing employability: neurodiversity and the expansion of diagnosis into the workplace.

This paper analyses the workplace as a critical site where overdiagnosis is institutionally reconfigured. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in three workspaces hosting technology startups and creative agencies in Lisbon, Portugal, including participant observation and in-depth interviews with twelve neurodivergent employees and three HR managers, the paper traces how the neurodiversity movement's ethos of "difference, not deficit" is absorbed into organisational governance. It explores how initiatives framed as inclusive often intensify institutional demands for formal diagnosis as a prerequis

Surveillance of noise exposure levels in workplaces in Beijing.

Occupational noise-induced deafness is the second most prevalent occupational disease in China after pneumoconiosis. This study aims to estimate overall noise exposure levels and trends in industrial enterprises in Beijing. A total of 286 enterprises were monitored, and the median and interquartile range (IQR) of noise exposure levels were calculated. The distribution of noise exposure level was analyzed, revealing that 116 enterprises exceeded permissible noise limits. In terms of industry, noise exceedance was observed in 28 enterprises engaged in metal product manufacturing (24.13%) and 27

Workplace violence in radiology: results of a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence (WPV) is a growing issue in health care with far-reaching consequences for health workers' physical and psychological well-being. While some medical specialities like emergency medicine have always been considered at higher risk for WPV, several studies have also reported its occurrence in radiology. AIMS: This systematic review aimed to comprehensively synthesize the types of WPV in radiology, its psychological impact, and the underlying risk and protective factors. METHODS: We searched five electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus,

Workplace violence and intention to quit in the English NHS.

NHS job vacancies remain at record levels and an increasing number of staff are leaving the NHS. Work-related violence is an aspect that has received little attention as a possible driving force in dropout rates among NHS workforce. Recent figures indicate that approximately 15% of NHS staff had experienced physical violence while at work (NHS Staff Survey, 2022). Given the prevalence of abuse and the consequences it may have on staff wellbeing, we examine the impact of workplace violence on intention to quit the organisation. We employ data from the NHS Staff Survey, a rich dataset that recor
