Acute osseous and soft tissue injuries to the hand and wrist are a common cause for ER visitation. Though diagnostic assessment has historically remained the province of conventional radiography, CT and MRI, sonography is gaining increasing acceptance and utilization. Offering multiple inherent advantages as an imaging modality, ultrasonic assessment has proven its utility in the evaluation of ligamentous and tendinous carpal and digital injuries as well as infection and inflammation. In this review, we will initially discuss sonographic technique and relevant normal anatomical features. Illus

BACKGROUND: In some pediatric ankle and wrist injuries, the clinical picture is suggestive of a fracture despite negative standard radiographs.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this prospective study was to determine the effectiveness of high-resolution ultrasound (US) in differentiating radiographically occult fractures from sprains.
METHODS: During a period of 3 years children aged 2 to 16 years, who sustained an acute ankle and wrist injury suggestive of being a fracture on clinical examination, but with negative radiograph, were referred for high-resolution US. Follow-up radiographs were obtained

We report the incidence of acute sporting injuries to the hand and wrist in the general population that required management in the Orthopaedic department. During a four month period, we prospectively identified all sports related injuries, which were referred for continued management in the Orthopaedic department. Eight hundred and fifty-one sports injuries were identified. Of them 400 (47%) were to the hand and wrist. There were 304 (76%) males and 96 (24%) females with an average age of 24.6 years and 26.5 years respectively. Injuries comprised of 286 (71%) fractures, 88 (22%) soft tissue in

The objective of this investigation was to determine the effect of wrist guard use on all upper-extremity injuries in snowboarders. This matched case-control study was conducted at 19 ski areas in Quebec, Canada. Cases were 1,066 injured snowboarders who reported upper-extremity injuries to the ski patrol during the 2001-2002 season. Controls were 970 snowboarders with non-upper-extremity injuries who were matched to cases on ski area and the nearest date, age, and sex, in that order. The response rate was 71.8% (73.5% for cases and 70.1% for controls). Cases were compared with controls with r

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of chronic wrist injuries among adolescent gymnasts and the consequences of repetitive stress.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Students of a Chinese opera school underwent radiography of both wrists and answered a questionnaire. They were separated into study (n = 261) and control (n = 63) groups according to participation in or abstinence from exercise training, respectively. They were further separated into fused and unfused physis subgroups. The ulnar variance was measured on posteroanterior radiographs. Abnormalities of distal radii were investigated.

Many performing artists, and especially instrumental musicians, sustain performance-compromising injuries to the wrist and hand. The majority of these are a consequence of overuse as well as of the individual hazards of playing each instrument. An understanding of the specific risk factors of each instrument and of the more general occupational risks of musicians is an invaluable asset in diagnosing, treating, and preventing these career-threatening medical problems.

Wrist arthrography was performed in 30 patients suffering from post-traumatic wrist sprain, or whom 15 sustained fractures. A longstanding soft-tissue injury was demonstrated in 70% of the whole group and in 60% of wrist sprains not associated with fracture. Findings include radiocarpal-radionulnar communications (26.6%), radiocarpal-midcarpal communications (36.6%), midcarpal-carpometacarpal communications (30%), radiocarpal-pisotriquetral communications (60%), tendon communications (20%), and lymphatic filling (43.3%).

Injury patterns of the hand and wrist can be complex and challenging for the emergency physician to diagnose and treat. The ability of the hand to perform delicate maneuvers requires a very intricate interplay of bones, ligaments, and tendons. Unfortunately, due to the omnipresence of the hand, the hand and wrist are commonly injured. These injuries can be debilitating if not treated correctly and can be both time-consuming and fraught with medicolegal risk. This article provides the necessary knowledge to diagnose and treat common hand and wrist injuries encountered in the emergency departmen

Ice hockey continues to be a popular, fast-paced, contact sport enjoyed internationally. Due to the physicality of the game, players are at a higher risk of injury. In the 2010 Winter Olympics, men's ice hockey had the highest injury rate compared to any other sport. In this review, we present a comprehensive analysis of evaluation and management strategies of common hand, wrist, and elbow injuries in ice hockey players. Future reseach focusing on the incidence and outcomes of these hand, wrist and elbow injuries in ice hockey players is warranted.

Injuries to the hand and wrist are commonly encountered in athletes. Decisions regarding the most appropriate treatment, the timing of treatment, and return to play are made while balancing desires to resume athletic activities and sound orthopedic principles. Little recognition in the literature exists regarding the need for a different approach when treating these injuries in elite athletes and the timing to return to play. This study explored the complexities of treating hand and wrist injuries in the elite athlete. Thirty-seven consultant hand surgeons for teams in the National Football Le

Fractures of the scaphoid and capitate bones are frequently nondisplaced at the initial examination. In addition, obliquity of the fracture line may result in the fracture not being profiled on routine views. Angling the radiographic tube 30 degrees off the vertical toward the elbow results in elongation of the scaphoid and capitate bones and improves visualization of the scaphoid over routine posteroanterior radiographs. Reversing the angle of the tube to 30 degrees from the vertical toward the fingertips further elongates the capitate. This is useful for delineating occult fractures of the c

Authors report on arterial injuries in a 2-year material of hand injured. The combination of injuries observed and the methods of treatment are described. Attention is called to the fact, that because of anatomical characteristics of these regions, the diagnosis of arterial injuries is not always easy. Four cases of their own are briefly described in whom the arterial injury could be stated only at the development of complications (pulsating haematoma, false aneurysm, later bleeding). The importance of the primary careful treatment and the significance of the examination of the circulation (Al
