A split attractor design for rapidly writing a navigational goal.

Recurrent attractor networks are widely thought to form the basis of working memory1-3, but how they can be rapidly switched on and off is unclear4-7. Here we investigate stability and switching in a recurrent circuit of the fly navigation centre8. h∆K and PFG neurons are recurrently connected in a ring structure and exhibit shared persistent bump activity that turns on with odour and terminates at the end of a goal-directed run. Using whole-cell recordings, we show that persistence in h∆K depends on recurrence, and that h∆K receives slow recurrent excitation and fast inhibition from its synap

How to write an inflammatory bowel disease surgical report.

The development of detailed surgical reports is essential for the effective management of inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis. These reports facilitate postoperative care, multidisciplinary planning, and are critical for studies on surgical outcomes and complications. A well-structured report should include information before, during, and after surgery. Preoperative factors include team identification, surgical plan, anesthesia, patient positioning, estimated blood loss, and urinary output data. During surgery, documentation should cover unexpected

How big is the medical writing industry? Why it matters.

Medical writing is a key element in pharmaceutical companies' efforts to shape the relevant medical science literature. As part of what is called 'publication planning', medical writing can influence the knowledge base on which prescribers make decisions, and can build specific claims in targeted sales efforts. Most publication planning is done by hired medical education and communication companies (MECCs), with the rest done by other commercial entities, such as units of pharmaceutical companies or of contract research organizations, that provide essentially the same services as MECCs. Here w

Writing proficiency in English as L2 in Spanish children with dyslexia.

Different studies have demonstrated that people with dyslexia have difficulties in acquiring fluent reading and writing. These problems are also evident when they learn a second language. The aim of our study was to investigate if there is a linguistic transfer effect for writing in children with dyslexia when they face tasks in English (L2), as well as the possible influence of other linguistic skills (spelling, vocabulary and reading) in English (L2) and in Spanish (L1). Participants completed a series of tasks both in Spanish and English: a picture naming task, a word reading task, a word s

Computerised analysis of writing and drawing by essential tremor phenotype.

We investigated whether computerised analysis of writing and drawing could discriminate essential tremor (ET) phenotypes according to the 2018 Consensus Statement on the Classification of Tremors. The Consensus scheme emphasises soft additional findings, mainly motor, that do not suffice to diagnose another tremor syndrome. Ten men and nine women were classified by blinded assessors according to Consensus Axis 1 definitions of ET and ET plus. Blinded scoring of tremor severity and alternating limb movement was also conducted. Twenty healthy participants acted as controls. Four writing and thre

Difficulties of Young Adults With Dyslexia in Reading and Writing Numbers.

Letters and numbers are different domains, and their differentiation increases with schooling. It has nonetheless been argued that reading alphabetic and numerical materials partly involves the same processes, even in adults. Whether individuals with dyslexia have difficulty reading and writing numbers remains to be established. This study examined this issue in a group of 30 young adults with a diagnosis of dyslexia, without any concurrent specific difficulty in processing quantities, compared with a typically developing group matched for gender, age, university attended and course of studies

Executive functions and writing skills in children with and without ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been associated with impairments in executive functioning and academic writing skills. However, our understanding of the extent to which these children's writing difficulties are related to their underdeveloped executive functions-and whether this relation is attributable to specific executive functions-is limited. METHOD: A clinically-evaluated and carefully-phenotyped sample of 91 children ages 8-13 (M = 10.60, SD = 1.25; 37 girls) were administered multiple, counterbalanced tests of the three core executive functions

Effects of assistive technology for students with reading and writing disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Assistive technology has been used to mitigate reading disabilities for almost three decades, and tablets with text-to-speech and speech-to-text apps have been introduced in recent years to scaffold reading and writing. Few scientifically rigorous studies, however, have investigated the benefits of this technology. PURPOSE: The aim was to explore the effects of assistive technology for students with severe reading disabilities. METHOD: This study included 149 participants. The intervention group received 24 sessions of assistive technology training, and the control group received

Writing Gender with Sexuality: Reflections on the Diaries of Lou Sullivan.

In contemporary psychoanalytic writing, gender tends to be disarticulated from sexuality. While this has been a theoretically useful approach, especially as regards the critical appraisal of early traditional literature (which often assumed a facile coherence between sex, sexuality, and gender), this position too often leaves gender stripped of one of the most compelling forces in psychoanalytic theorizing, namely, its relation to the sexual. Here the diaries of Lou Sullivan (1951-1991)-a transsexual man who began writing long before considering sexual transitioning-are used to present an exte

[Syphilis and Henry VIII : A disease writes world history].

Syphilis is a chronic sexually transmitted disease (STD). At the end of the 15th century, Christopher Columbus imported it as "a souvenir" from his first voyage of discovery. The disease met a weakened and not yet infected population. The disease quickly engulfed all of Europe. The course of the disease was much more dramatic than it is today. Even royal houses were not spared. Using the example of Henry VIII of England this article briefly outlines the influence of syphilis both to the house of Tudor and thus on the big political stage.

The role of learning in improving functional writing in stroke aphasia.

PURPOSE: Improving writing in people with aphasia could improve ability to communicate, reduce isolation and increase access to information. One area that has not been sufficiently explored is the effect of impairment based spelling therapies on functional writing. A multiple case study was conducted with eight participants with aphasia subsequent to stroke. This aimed to measure the effects of spelling therapy on functional writing and perception of disability. METHOD: Participants engaged in 10 sessions of copy and recall spelling therapy. Outcome measures included spelling to dictation of

Automatic interpretation and writing report of the adult waking electroencephalogram.

Automatic interpretation of the EEG has so far been faced with significant difficulties because of a large amount of spatial as well as temporal information contained in the EEG, continuous fluctuation of the background activity depending on changes in the subject's vigilance and attention level, the occurrence of paroxysmal activities such as spikes and spike-and-slow-waves, contamination of the EEG with a variety of artefacts and the use of different recording electrodes and montages. Therefore, previous attempts of automatic EEG interpretation have been focussed only on a specific EEG featu

The neural basis for writing from dictation in the temporoparietal cortex.

Cortical electrical stimulation mapping was used to study neural substrates of the function of writing in the temporoparietal cortex. We identified the sites involved in oral language (sentence reading and naming) and writing from dictation, in order to spare these areas during removal of brain tumours in 30 patients (23 in the left, and 7 in the right hemisphere). Electrostimulation of the cortex impaired writing ability in 62 restricted cortical areas (.25 cm2). These were found in left temporoparietal lobes and were mostly located along the superior temporal gyrus (Brodmann's areas 22 and 4

Writing out prescriptions: hyperrealism and the chemical regulation of mood.

Using contemporary literary sources, we explore the powerful ideological framework that normalises prescription dependency as part of everyday life, focusing upon the treatment of mood disorders. Through a literary critical methodology, we read novels by American hyperrealists such as Bret Easton Ellis, David Foster Wallace and Rick Moody as symptomatic of prescription culture. Though we argue that these writers brilliantly understand the dangers of mood medication, they do not escape its logic, rather, 'writing it out' as they write against it. Indeed, we propose that their novels bear ironic

Gout in the writings of eminent ancient Greek and Byzantine physicians.

Gout is a medical condition with typical recurrent attacks of acute inflammatory arthritis. The severity of this illness has been recognised from antiquity, and several ancient physicians studied it intensively. This paper presents the pathogenesis of the disease, approaches to therapy and preventive measures based on a number of original medical scripts from Hippocrates to the end of the Byzantine era.

Benefits of expressive writing in lowering rumination and depressive symptoms.

Depression-vulnerable college students (with both elevated prior depressive symptoms and low current depressive symptoms) wrote on 3 consecutive days in either an expressive writing or a control condition. As predicted, participants scoring above the median on the suppression scale of the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (Gross & John, 2003) showed significantly lower depression symptoms at the 6-month assessment when they wrote in the expressive writing versus the control condition. Additional analyses revealed that treatment benefits were mediated by changes in the Brooding but not the Refle

Writing errors of a Cantonese dysgraphic patient and their theoretical implications.

This paper reports a case study of a Cantonese-speaking dysgraphic patient. Among his written errors were phonologically plausible errors that were mostly homophonous or differed only in tone from their target. They occurred not only in writing-to-dictation but also in written naming. Since his lexico-semantic system is hypothesized to be largely preserved, as evidenced by normal performance on non-verbal semantic tests and word-picture matching, the presence of homophone and tonal errors strengthened previous claims about the existence of lexically mediated non-semantic pathway of writing Chi

Cooling improves the writing performance of patients with writer's cramp.

Cooling of hand and forearm muscles by immersion in 15 degrees C cold water for 5 minutes improved the writing performance of patients with writer's cramp. Since abnormal processing of muscle spindle afferent discharges contributes to the pathology of writer's cramp, this effect might result from a reduction in muscle spindle activity by lowering muscle temperature. Cooling is a simple, cheap, and safe procedure, providing temporary relief for patients with writer's cramp.
