Winter feeding of elk in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and its effects on disease dynamics.

Providing food to wildlife during periods when natural food is limited results in aggregations that may facilitate disease transmission. This is exemplified in western Wyoming where institutional feeding over the past century has aimed to mitigate wildlife-livestock conflict and minimize winter mortality of elk (Cervus canadensis). Here we review research across 23 winter feedgrounds where the most studied disease is brucellosis, caused by the bacterium Brucella abortus Traditional veterinary practices (vaccination, test-and-slaughter) have thus far been unable to control this disease in elk, …

Prolonged Exposure Dermatosis: Reporting High Incidence of an Undiagnosed Facial Dermatosis on a Winter Wilderness Expedition.

OBJECTIVE: Previously unclassified inflammatory skin lesions referred to as sun bumps have been observed throughout the year on participants … occurring while in the wilderness. Seventy-four participants in a wilderness ski touring course in Wyoming fully completed a 44-question written survey concerning occurrence and risk factors for these lesions. Weather information and photographs were collected. RESULTS: Twenty-six percent of participants had similar lesions. The lesions were described a …

Abortion and premature birth in cattle following vaccination with Brucella abortus strain RB51.

Brucella abortus RB51 is the vaccine strain currently licensed for immunizing cattle against brucellosis in the United States. Most cattle are vaccinated as heifer calves at 4-12 months of age. Adult cattle may be vaccinated in selected high-risk situations. Two herds of pregnant adult cattle in the brucellosis-endemic area of Wyoming were vaccinated with a standard label dose (1.0-3.4 × 10(10) organisms) of RB51. Reproductive losses in the vaccinated herds were 5.3% (herd A) and 0.6% (herd B) and included abortions, stillbirths, premature calves, and unbred cows (presumed early abortion). Bru…

DNA genotyping suggests that recent brucellosis outbreaks in the Greater Yellowstone Area originated from elk.

Identifying the source of infectious disease outbreaks is difficult, especially for pathogens that infect multiple wildlife species. Brucella spp. are among the most problematic zoonotic agents worldwide, and they are notoriously difficult to detect and identify. We genotyped 10 variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) DNA loci in 56 Brucella abortus isolates from bison (Bos bison), elk (Cervus elaphus), and cattle (Bos taurus) to test the wildlife species most likely to be the origin of recent outbreaks of brucellosis in cattle in the Greater Yellowstone Area. Isolates from cattle and elk were

Evaluating nephrotoxicity of high-molecular-weight organic compounds in drinking water from lignite aquifers.

High-molecular-weight organic compounds such as humic acids and/or fulvic acids that are naturally mobilized from lignite beds into untreated drinking-water supplies were suggested as one possible cause of Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) and cancer of the renal pelvis. A lab investigation was undertaken in order to assess the nephrotoxic potential of such organic compounds using an in vitro tissue culture model. Because of the infeasibility of exposing kidney tissue to low concentrations of organics for years in the lab, tangential flow ultrafiltration was employed to hyperconcentrate samples

Ski injury statistics, 1982 to 1993, Jackson Hole Ski Resort.

A retrospective analysis was conducted on injury statistics compiled over 12 seasons, from 1982 to 1993 (2.55 million skier-days), at a Wyoming ski resort. The population at risk was determined by ticket sales per year. A total of 9749 skiing injuries was indexed by anatomic region and severity according to diagnosis on initial evaluation. Injury rates were then analyzed as a function of time. The injury rate remained constant at 3.7 injuries per 1000 skier-days during the 12 seasons. The rate of lower extremity to upper extremity injury decreased from 4:1 to 2:1 during the study period (P < 0…

The case for value-based care in kidney transplantation: insights into geography, growth, and financial models.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Kidney transplantation (KT) is the preferred treatment for end-stage renal disease (ESRD), yet systemic challenges, inclu … e states like Texas, California, and New York have the largest number of centers, while states like Wyoming and Vermont lack operational centers, creating access barriers. Growth in KT rates following the 2014 Kidney Allocation System (KAS) reforms has stabilized at 3-5% since 2023. Geographic disparities persist, with regions like the South Atlantic and …

A case-control study of risk factors for death from 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1): is American Indian racial status an independent risk factor?

Historically, American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations have suffered excess morbidity and mortality from influenza. We investigated the risk factors for death from 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1) in persons residing in five states with substantial AI/AN populations. We conducted a case-control investigation using pandemic influenza fatalities from 2009 in Alaska, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Wyoming. Controls were outpatients with influenza. We reviewed medical records and interviewed case proxies and controls. We used multiple imputation to predict missing data and multivariable…

An outbreak of salmonellosis associated with a fatality in a healthy child: a large dose and severe illness.

In June 1982, an outbreak of Salmonella gastroenteritis occurred on a farm in Wyoming. All eight affected persons became severely ill 8-18 hours after they had eaten homemade ice cream. A previously healthy 13-year-old boy died 37 hours after exposure; his mother and four younger siblings were transferred to intensive care units in hospitals in adjoining states, and the remaining two adult males were hospitalized locally. Salmonella typhimurium was isolated from all eight ill persons, from the remaining ice cream, and from the family's hens whose eggs were used in the preparation of the ice cr…

Comparing the effectiveness of different DNA extraction methods in MX-80 bentonite.

Approaches to DNA extraction play a crucial role in determining the variability of results obtained through 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Particularly, clay-rich samples can impede the efficiency of various standard cultivation-independent techniques. We conducted an inter-laboratory comparison study to thoroughly assess the efficacy of two published DNA extraction methods (kit-based and phenol-chloroform-based) specifically designed for bentonite samples. To this end, we spiked Wyoming MX 80 bentonite with two different mock communities and compared the obtained DNA yield and purity, the pres…

Neuropathology and craniofacial lesions of osteopetrotic Red Angus calves.

Inherited osteopetrosis was identified in cattle herds in Wyoming, Nebraska, and Missouri in 2008 to 2010. Ten affected Red Angus calves were examined to characterize lesions in brain, teeth, and skull. Six affected aborted or stillborn calves were homozygous for the recently characterized deletion mutation in SLC4A2. Four affected calves were heterozygous for the SLC4A2 mutation and survived 1 to 7 days after birth. Gross lesions were similar in all 10 calves. Brains were rectangular and dorsoventrally compressed, with concave depressions in the parietal cortex owing to thickened parietal bon…

The effect of disaster on the health and well-being of older women.

Relatively little attention has been paid to the post-disaster health status and well-being of older persons. The data discussed in this article were gathered through use of a retrospective cohort survey five years following a major flood in the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania. The subsample of women sixty-five years and older used in this analysis is composed of 122 female victims and forty-five controls from the same communities. The instruments used to measure mental status included Langner's 22-Item Scale, Zung's Self-rating Depression Scale, and a modified Self-Report Symptom Inventory (SC…

The serologic prevalence of Q fever (Coxiella burnetii) complement-fixing antibodies in the Peninsular bighorn sheep of Southern California.

Q fever is a rare illness in the Southern California desert. During the past 34 years only 6 patients have been diagnosed with the disease at the Eisenhower Medical Center, a referral center for much of the desert and surrounding mountains. In all but 2 instances, Q fever was identified in patients who have been in contact with imported domestic sheep who are brought to the desert to graze and lamb in the fall and winter. The sheep are sent back to Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana in the spring. With frequent infection by Coxiella burnetii established in domestic sheep, we elected to study the prev…
