Regeneration of surfactant-modified zeolite after saturation with chromate and perchloroethylene.

Surfactant-modified zeolites (SMZ) have drawn recent attention as sorbents due to their removal of multiple types of contaminants and low material cost. However, like most sorbents, SMZ has a finite sorption capacity for different contaminants. The potential applications, economics, and efficiency of SMZ as a sorbent are related to the ability to regenerate the material. This paper reports several methods to regenerate chromate- and perchloroethylene-saturated SMZ. Regeneration of chromate-saturated SMZ was achieved by flushing with a sodium carbonate/sodium hydroxide solution. However, this h

Malignant mesothelioma induced by asbestos and zeolite in the mouse peritoneal cavity.

The carcinogenicity of asbestos (amosite and chrysotile) and zeolite (fibrous erionite, mordenite, and synthetic zeolite 4A) were studied in the peritoneum of 586 BALB/C male mice after a single intraperitoneal or intraabdominal wall injection. As controls, 182 mice treated with and without saline solution were used. Both asbestos types and fibrous erionite frequently produced malignant peritoneal tumors after long latency; tumors developed in 93 of 394 animals (23.6%) treated with asbestos or fibrous erionite 7 months or more after administration. All of the induced peritoneal tumors were int

Dynamic Cu pairing within SSZ-13 zeolites: balancing low-temperature activity and hydrothermal stability for NH3-SCR.

Cu/SSZ-13 serves as the benchmark catalyst for ammonia selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) of NOx from diesel engine exhaust, yet its further development is constrained by the trade-off between low-temperature activity and hydrothermal stability. Recent mechanistic advances reveal that the active Cu sites are not static isolated ions, but dynamically evolving NH3-solvated species capable of migration and transient pairing within CHA cages. Under reaction conditions, NH3 solvated Cu ions become mobile and undergo transient pairing, governing efficient low-temperature redox cycling through m

Unveiling the Catalytic Pyrolysis Behavior and Kinetics of Epoxy Resin over Niobium Oxide-Tailored ZSM‑5 Zeolites.

The sustainable recycling of thermosetting epoxy resin (ER) waste remains a critical environmental challenge. While fast pyrolysis offers a viable upcycling route, the direct thermal degradation of ER predominantly yields low-value, oxygen-rich phenolic compounds. In this study, a series of hierarchical niobium oxide-tailored ZSM-5 zeolites (xNb-ZSM) were synthesized to promote the selective catalytic pyrolysis of ER into high-value aromatic hydrocarbons. Comprehensive characterizations (X-ray diffractometry (XRD), BET, TEM, and pyridine-adsorbed Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (Py-IR)

Mechanistic insights into electronic modulation of binuclear iron-based zeolites for selective oxidation of methane to methanol.

Conceptually, direct methane-to-methanol (DMTM) conversion represents an efficient approach for methane (CH4) valorization, which is thermodynamically feasible at ambient temperature. However, this process consistently faces a conversion-selectivity trade-off. Particularly, when employing dioxygen (O2) as the oxidizing agent, an additional compromise arises between O2 activation and the generation of reactive oxygen species necessary for CH4 activation. Enzyme-like iron-based zeolites are regarded as promising catalysts for DMTM. We investigated possible iron clusters in ZSM-5 based on ab init

Low Molecular Weight Biobased Aromatics from Pyrolysis Liquids Using Zeolites: Yield Improvements by Using Pyrolysis Oil Fractions.

Pyrolysis liquids from lignocellulosic biomass have the potential to be used as a feed for aromatics such as benzene, toluene, and xylenes (BTX) using catalytic upgrading with zeolites. We here report an experimental study on the conversion of various pyrolysis oil fractions to determine the most suitable one for BTX synthesis. For this purpose, the pyrolysis liquid was fractionated using several extraction/distillation steps to give four fractions with different chemical compositions. The fractions were analyzed in detail using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, elemental analysis, gas

DFT study of deNO(x) reactions in the gas phase: mimicking the reaction mechanism over BaNaY zeolites.

Neutral and ionic pathways for aci-nitromethane decomposition were studied in the gas phase, and the Gibbs free energy surfaces were constructed at 473 K. The pathways studied were based on proposed mechanisms of NO(x) reduction by acetaldehyde over BaNaY zeolites. Density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory was used, and 29 stable intermediates and 39 transition states were identified and quantified. Plausible pathways involving unimolecular decomposition or NO(2) addition were both explored. The rate constants for all elementary steps were estimated using transition

Disentangling Adjacent Location of Copper and Palladium Cations within CHA Zeolites for Efficient NOx and C3H6 Adsorption.

Pd-based zeolite passive NOx adsorbers (PNAs) can mitigate diesel cold-start emissions; however, their NOx storage capacity and stability are severely limited by hydrocarbon poisoning. Here, we engineer PdCu/SSZ-13 with Pd cations confined in six-membered rings and Cu cations located in adjacent eight-membered rings in the CHA framework. Relative to Pd/SSZ-13, PdCu/SSZ-13 achieves an NOx uptake of 145.8 μmol·g-1 under the NO+CO atmosphere and retains 113.8 μmol·g-1 in the presence of C3H6, corresponding to an NOx storage efficiency of >83% after 5 min. Cu incorporation further increases C3H6 u

Engineering adsorption selectivity in MFI zeolites through suppression of silanol-driven water competition for efficient acetone capture.

Efficient physisorption of acetone for indoor air purification critically depends on selecting a hydrophobic sorbent with relatively small pores, which not only provides optimal confinement for acetone molecules but also minimizes competitive adsorption of water. Here, we first systematically assessed, by density functional theory calculations, the adsorption behaviors of both acetone and water in pure silica and a series of metal-modified MFI type zeolites. These simulations reveal that in the pure silica MFI, acetone and water compete for adsorption at the silanol groups, and the incorporati

Size-inverse molecular sieving xenon/krypton separation through cation-tuned gating effect within Linde Type A zeolites.

Achieving highly selective xenon/krypton separation is a longstanding challenge due to the similar physicochemical properties of these noble gases. Here, we develop the cation-tuned gating sieving mechanism in Linde Type A zeolites to achieve a high xenon/krypton IAST selectivity over 1600. Through the cation exchange by Ag+ to introduce the preferential binding of xenon over krypton gas, followed by Ca²⁺ exchange to modulate cation density within the pore cavity so as to facilitate xenon uptake, the resulting Ag9Ca1.5A overcomes the kinetic limitations and achieves a dynamic xenon/krypton sel

Modulation of Al Sites in MWW Zeolites with Enhanced Catalytic Performance by Dual Organic Structure-Directing Agents.

MWW zeolites exhibit a distinctive combination of both 10-ring and 12-ring features, making them highly versatile in catalytic applications. When dealing with bulk molecules, the acid sites located on the external surface often serve as the primary active sites, and thus, the distribution of Al sites significantly impacts the active acidity and catalytic performance. In this study, a precise modulation of Al distribution within MWW zeolites was investigated using commercially available N,N,N-trimethyl-1-adamantylammonium hydroxide (TMAdaOH) and cyclohexylamine as organic structure-directing ag

SO2 Poisoning, Regeneration, and Impact on Dimer-Cu Intermediates in the NH3-SCR Reaction over Cu-Zeolites.

This study demonstrates that Al-rich, high-Cu-loaded Cu-SSZ-13 exhibits superior resistance to SO2 poisoning under actual SCR conditions. The high Cu content mitigates the risk of SO2-induced structural degradation. A key finding is that lower regeneration temperatures can lead to more severe secondary poisoning, while high temperatures induce hydrothermal aging. Thus, controlling the regeneration temperature is critical for maintaining long-term catalyst stability. Additionally, experimental results and DFT calculations show that SO2 preferentially reacts with dimer-Cu species, especially hyd

Consequences of Pore Polarity and Solvent Structure on Epoxide Ring-Opening in Lewis and Brønsted Acid Zeolites.

The structure of solvent molecules within zeolite pores influences the rates and selectivities of catalytic reactions by altering the free energies of reactive species. Here, we examine the consequences of these effects on the kinetics and thermodynamics of 1,2-epoxybutane (C4H8O) ring-opening with methanol (CH3OH) in acetonitrile (CH3CN) cosolvent over Lewis acidic (Zr-BEA) and Brønsted acidic (Al-BEA) zeolites of varying (SiOH) x density. Despite ostensibly identical reaction mechanisms across materials, turnover rates depend differently on (SiOH) x density between acid types. (SiOH) x -rich

Spectroscopic identification and catalytic relevance of NH4+ intermediates in selective NOx reduction over Cu-SSZ-13 zeolites.

Reduction of harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) from diesel engine exhausts is one of the key challenges in environmental protection, and can be achieved by NH3-assisted selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) using copper-exchanged chabazite zeolites (i.e. Cu-CHA, including Cu-SSZ-13 and Cu-SAPO-34) as catalysts. Understanding the redox chemistry of Cu-CHA in NH3-SCR catalysis is crucial for further improving the NOx reduction efficiency. Here, a series of Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts with different Cu ion exchange levels were prepared, thoroughly characterized by different techniques such as X-ray diffrac

The roles of Brønsted acidity in low-temperature catalytic oxidation of NO over acidic zeolites with H2O2.

In this study, low-temperature catalytic NO oxidation with H2O2 over Na- and H-exchanged Y and ZSM-5 zeolites was investigated at 140 °C which is the average exhaust temperature of coal-fired power plant. Fast catalytic NO oxidation rates were observed over H-zeolites, and catalytic activity was proportional to the amount of Brønsted acid sites. HZSM-5 and HY zeolites show 65% and 95% NO removal efficiency, respectively, but the catalytic stability of HY was lower than HZM-5 due to partial dealumination during the reaction. In-situ DRIFTS analysis showed that NO+ species coordinated at framewo

Well-Defined Noble Metal Single Sites in Zeolites as an Alternative to Catalysis by Insoluble Metal Salts.

Insoluble precious metal chlorides in polymeric form (i.e., PtCl2, PdCl2, AuCl, RhCl3) are commonly used as catalysts for a plethora of organic reactions in solution. Here we show that only the minor soluble fraction of these precious metal chlorides (typically 5-30%) is catalytically active for the hydroamination, hydroalkoxylation, hydrosilylation, and cycloisomerization of alkynes and alkenes, and that the resting insoluble metal is catalytically useless. To circumvent this waste of precious metal and follow a rational design, we generate here well-dispersed Pt(II) and Pd(II) single sites o

Benzene carboxylic acid derivatized graphene oxide nanosheets on natural zeolites as effective adsorbents for cationic dye removal.

Graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets were grafted to acid-treated natural clinoptilolite-rich zeolite powders followed by a coupling reaction with a diazonium salt (4-carboxybenzenediazoniumtetrafluoroborate) to the GO surface. Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed successful grafting of GO nanosheets onto the zeolite surface. The application of the adsorbents for the adsorption of rhodamine B from aqueous solutions was then demonstrated. After reaching adsorption equilibrium the maximum adsorption capacities were shown to b

Spectroscopic signatures of VOC physisorption on microporous solids. Application for trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene adsorption on MFI zeolites.

This paper presents an experimental infrared spectroscopic study of the physisorption of trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) on a self-supported high silica ZSM5 zeolite. The evolution of the shape, area, and location of vibration bands of both the adsorbent and the adsorbate is analyzed with respect to the number of sorbed molecules. The state of the adsorbed phase is characterized upon adsorption by comparing the location of the investigated vibration bands with the location of the corresponding vibration bands of the chloroalkenes in gaseous, liquid, and solid phases. Local Structures Associated with Molecular Access in an Extra-Large-Pore Zeolite.

Extra-large-pore zeolites extend molecular shape selectivity toward bulky substrates, yet crystallographic pore size alone may not determine molecular accessibility in a real crystal. Here, we use low-dose iDPC-STEM and electron ptychography to establish the effective pore architecture of ZEO-1, a fully connected aluminosilicate containing intersecting 16- and 12-membered-ring channels. While the bulk framework retains its ideal topology, imaging reveals distinct termination motifs at the crystal surfaces and defect-containing intergrowths at the crystal edges.
