Community acquired staphylococcal skin infections in rural areas of Zimbabwe.

Swabs from superficial skin or wound infection in 254 outpatients at rural clinics and hospitals in the Eastern Districts of Zimbabwe were examined for microorganisms. The most common site of infection was on the limbs, with infected wounds or abscesses being the most common complaint. Staphylococcus aureus was by far the most common pathogen being isolated from almost half the specimens. Coliforms were obtained from 36pc and streptococci from 18pc of swabs. Over two-thirds of the staphylococcal isolates showed in-vitro resistance to penicillin and there was an indication that penicillin resis

Early experience with reconstructive surgery at Mpilo Central Hospital, Zimbabwe.

A total of 46 patients were admitted to Mpilo Central Hospital for various reconstructive procedures between August 1988 and February 1989. The majority of patients had postburn contractures, i.e. 18 cases (39%). The rest of the patients were admitted for treatment of bed sores (nine cases, 20%), keloids (nine cases, 20%), post-traumatic complex soft tissue defects (five cases, 11%), lower lip defects following a human bite (three cases, 6%) and complex lesions on the face (two cases, 4%). Although a few complications were encountered the results overall were very good. There was no mortality

Climate change, disaster management and primary health care in Zimbabwe.

The health crises related to climate change in African countries are predicted to get worse and more prevalent. The response to catastrophic events such as cyclones, flooding and landslides must be rapid and well-coordinated. Slower adverse events such as droughts, heat stress and food insecurity must similarly be anticipated, planned for and resourced. There are lessons to be learnt by the health system following the crisis created by Cyclone Idai in Zimbabwe during March 2019, which required a massive humanitarian response to mitigate the impact of torrential rainfall on lives and livelihood

Anthrax outbreak investigation in Tengwe, Mashonaland West Province, Zimbabwe, 2022.

BACKGROUND: Anthrax continues to be a disease of public health concern in Zimbabwe. Between December 2021 and February 2022, Tengwe reported 36 cases of human anthrax. Gastrointestinal anthrax has the potential to cause serious outbreaks leading to loss of human life. We investigated the outbreak, identified the risk factors using one health approach to inform outbreak control. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted descriptive analysis of the outbreak and a 1:2 unmatched case control study to identify risk factors for anthrax. A case was any Tengwe resident who developed an ulcer and/or abdomin

Systemic Sclerosis in Zimbabwe: Autoantibody Biomarkers, Clinical, and Laboratory Correlates.

INTRODUCTION: Systemic sclerosis (SScl) is an autoimmune disease whose prevalence is rarely reported in Africa. Autoantibodies are the biomarkers of the condition, precede overt disease and determine disease phenotypes. SSc specific autoantibodies also vary between racial groupings. Objective: To investigate the clinical and laboratory characteristics of Zimbabwean patients who were reactive SSc specific autoantibodies. MATERIALS AND METHOD: 240 patients, 173 of them female with SSc specific autoantibodies were included. Autoantibodies were detected by indirect immunofluorescence microscopy a

Community-based self-collected human papillomavirus screening in rural Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: In low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), women have limited access to and uptake of cervical cancer screening. Delayed diagnosis leads to poorer outcomes and early mortality, and continues to impede cancer control disproportionately in LMIC. Integrating self-collected, community-based screening for High Risk-Human Papilloma Virus (HR-HPV) into existent HIV programs is a potential screening method to identify women at high risk for developing high-risk cervical lesions. METHODS: We implemented community-based cross-sectional study on self-collection HR-HPV screening in conjuncti

Neurological complications of human immunodeficiency virus infection in Zimbabwe-2005.

Zimbabwe is a high prevalence area for HIV infection, and provides opportunities for studying complications of AIDS in both antiretroviral naive and treated groups of patients. Figures for HIV prevalence are among the highest in the world, but the number of people receiving treatment is very small. Economic and political factors contribute to this important health crisis. Opportunistic diseases as a whole and their relative frequencies of presentation in southern Africa are discussed, emphasizing the lead role of tuberculosis. The limited data that do exist regarding neurological complications

Capsular serogroups of Pasteurella multocida isolated from animals in Zimbabwe.

Pasteurella multocida is isolated from a variety of disease conditions from different animal species in our diagnostic laboratory. In order to determine serogroup distribution among the isolates, an indirect haemagglutination test using glutaraldehyde-fixed sheep red blood cells was employed. A serological examination of 79 isolates revealed that 47/79 were of capsular serogroup A, 11/79 capsular serogroup D, 4/79 capsular serogroup B and 17/79 were untypable strains. None of the isolates belonged to either serogroup E or F. All those from cases of classical pasteurellosis could be grouped, bu

Trial of labour after previous caesarean section in rural Zimbabwe.

OBJECTIVE: Vaginal delivery after previous caesarean section is widely accepted in Western countries. Is a trial of labour in rural Africa also safe for mother and child? STUDY DESIGN: In a case control study in rural Zimbabwe the outcome of labour of 281 women who had one or more previous caesarean sections was compared with 4501 women who had no previous caesarean section. Maternal and perinatal mortality, the percentage of vaginal birth and factors related to the achievement of vaginal delivery were studied. Data were tested for statistical significance with a Mantel-Haenszel equation for

Mycoplasma-associated polyarthritis in farmed crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) in Zimbabwe.

Outbreaks of polyarthritis in farmed crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) on five farms in Zimbabwe are described. Cases were reported only among the rearing stock aged 1-3 years. No breeding stock suffered. Morbidity was about 10% and the mortality even lower. All the sick animals consistently displayed swollen limb joints as well as progressive lameness and paresis. The synovial structures in subacute cases contained mycoplasmas and excess turbid mucus which, at a later stage of the disease, became yellowish, inspissated and sterile. Cellular changes in the joint capsule included oedema, necros

Changing men's attitudes and behavior: the Zimbabwe Male Motivation Project.

A multimedia communication campaign was conducted between 1988 and 1989 to promote family planning among men in Zimbabwe. The campaign consisted of a 52-episode semiweekly radio soap opera, about 60 motivational talks, and two pamphlets about contraceptive methods. Changes over time were measured by comparing a subset of a follow-up survey conducted from October to December 1989 to a baseline survey conducted from April to June 1988. Men exposed to the campaign were also compared to men who were not exposed. The follow-up survey revealed that the campaign reached 52 percent of men aged 18 to 5

The prevalence and management of central post-stroke pain at a hospital in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Central post-stroke pain (CPSP) is a poorly diagnosed chronic pain. It is under-treated and usually mismanaged. OBJECTIVE: To establish the prevalence of CPSP and its management in stroke clinics at a tertiary hospital. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional design with stroke patients and health professionals from the stroke clinic at the tertiary hospital in Zimbabwe. RESULTS: Out of 166 stroke survivors, 8% had CPSP. Younger age (<60 years) was significantly associated with CPSP (P<0.003). Pain characteristics of CPSP were hyperaesthesia (10, 71%), electric shocks (9, 64%), temp

The rollout of Community ART Refill Groups in Zimbabwe: a qualitative evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Community ART Refill Groups (CARGs) are an antiretroviral therapy (ART) delivery model where clients voluntarily form into groups, and a group member visits the clinic to collect ART for all group members. In late 2016, Zimbabwe began a nationwide rollout of the CARG model. We conducted a qualitative evaluation to assess the perceived effects of this new national service delivery model. METHODS: In March-June 2018, we visited ten clinics implementing the CARG model across five provinces of Zimbabwe and conducted a focus group discussion with healthcare workers and in-depth inter

Assessment of quality of obstetric care in Zimbabwe using the standard primipara.

BACKGROUND: To improve maternity services in any country, there is need to monitor the quality of obstetric care. There is usually disparity of obstetric care and outcomes in most countries among women giving birth in different obstetric units. However, comparing the quality of obstetric care is difficult because of heterogeneous population characteristics and the difference in prevalence of complications. The concept of the standard primipara was introduced as a tool to control for these various confounding factors. This concept was used to compare the quality of obstetric care among district

A call to establish a child-centred disaster management framework in Zimbabwe.

Disasters have increased in intensity and frequency in recent times. However, disasters do not affect all groups in a society in a similar manner. This article, based mainly on qualitative desk research and document analysis, aims to illuminate the specific vulnerability of children to hazards and disasters. The research showed that owing to their special physiological, psychological, emotional and economic stature, children are an inherently vulnerable group. The paper advocates for existing disaster management structures and systems in Zimbabwe to elevate reduction of disaster risk amongst c

A review of the epidemiology and control of gastrointestinal nematode infections in cattle in Zimbabwe.

In this review, the main gastrointestinal nematodes infecting cattle in Zimbabwe and the epidemiological factors influencing their occurrence are reviewed and discussed. Nineteen gastrointestinal nematode species that belong to seven families have been found to occur in cattle in Zimbabwe. The main genera reported to date are Cooperia, Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus and Oesophagostomum and the dominant species are Cooperia pectinata, Cooperia punctata, Haemonchus placei and Trichostrongylus axei. The mixed infection by several species from the genera is the cause of parasitic gastroenteritis in

The impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on kinship resources for orphans in Zimbabwe.

The extended family has been recognized as a major safety net for orphans in sub-Saharan Africa. However, the mortality crisis associated with HIV/AIDS may drastically reduce the availability of relatives and thus undermine traditional forms of mutual support. In this article, the microsimulator SOCSIM is used to estimate and project quantities such as the number of living uncles, aunts, siblings, and grandparents available to orphans. The model is calibrated to the setting of Zimbabwe, using data from demographic and Health Surveys and estimates and projections of demographic rates from the U
