Underwater Computer Vision for Ecologists: A Framework for Curating Image Training Datasets for Object Detection.

As marine ecosystems experience accelerating change, there is an urgent need for efficient and scalable biodiversity monitoring tools. We present a 10-step framework for integrating computer vision (CV) tools into long-term underwater biodiversity monitoring, using a case study from coastal British Columbia. Over 9000 h of unbaited remote underwater video footage were collected from two kelp farms and reference sites between March 2022 and June 2023. The framework includes steps for creating an annotated training dataset using unsupervised and supervised CV tools, culminating in the training a

Tidal control of heavy metal loading in the nearshore of the northwestern Indian coast.

Heavy metals accumulate in the marine food chain and their excessive amounts are hazardous to aquatic and human lives. The current study presents the role of ecosystem variables especially tides in deciding the presence of ten heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Cu, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, V, Pb, and Cd) in seawater and copepods along the Indian west coast. The Indian northwestern coast is an industrial hub, where thousands of industries release enormous volumes of effluents, while the southwest coast has a far lower number of industries. Multiple surface seawater and zooplankton samples from eight selected marine

Quorum sensing-regulated chitin metabolism provides grazing resistance to Vibrio cholerae biofilms.

Association of Vibrio cholerae with chitinous surfaces of zooplankton is important for its persistence in marine environments, as it provides accessibility to nutrients and resistance to stresses. Predation by heterotrophic protists has a major impact on the survival of V. cholerae. V. cholerae forms biofilms as its main defensive strategy, and quorum sensing (QS) additionally regulates the production of antiprotozoal factors. The role of chitin and QS regulation in V. cholerae grazing resistance was investigated by exposing V. cholerae wild-type (WT) and QS mutant biofilms grown on chitin fla

An automated high-throughput platform reveals chromatic phototactic disruption in Daphnia magna exposed to the UV filters benzophenone-3 and octocrylene.

Modern imaging enables real-time observation of behavior under stress. Light is a major stressor for fish larvae and aquatic invertebrates, yet the effects of different wavelengths and intensities on behavior remain poorly understood. The freshwater zooplankton Daphnia magna, a key model species, typically displays negative vertical phototaxis to avoid predation. This study applied a high-throughput video-tracking system to assess chromatic phototactic responses in D. magna exposed to two common UV filters, octocrylene (OC) and benzophenone-3 (BP-3), at concentrations from 0.1 to 1000 μg/L. Functional Identity Drives Directional Shifts in Freshwater Plankton Biomass-Size Relationships.

Body size is a master variable in ecology that can predict ecosystem-level processes and reflect environmental conditions across diverse ecosystems. In freshwater ecosystems, the relationship between body size and biomass provides a powerful tool for characterizing community structure and trophic transfer efficiency. While these relationships are well established at the whole-community level, responses within plankton functional groups with distinct ecological characteristics have yet to be explored. In this study, we analysed plankton biomass-size relationships across > 550 Canadian lakes. Fo

Carbonate aquifer promoting a diverse and carbon-active aquatic habitats in a subtropical river system.

Riverine aquatic metabolism is a key component of the global carbon cycle, while the regulatory mechanisms of biological processes and their associated carbon fluxes remain poorly understood across river reach water bodies well connected with carbonate aquifers. This study compared the biogeochemical characteristics of several various aquatic environments in a karst headwater river system, highlighting differences in biological community structure and carbon cycling mechanisms among them. The results showed that in the karst water body of ground or underground, the phytoplankton community tota

Uptake of mercury by fish in an experimental boreal reservoir.

We studied the uptake of mercury (Hg) by finescale dace (Phoxinus neogaeus) in an experimental boreal reservoir for 2 years prior to flooding and 3 years after flooding, and in a natural wetland pond over the same 5-year period. Hg uptake was much higher after flooding as compared to uptake before flooding and in the natural pond. After flooding, Hg concentrations in late summer were usually 2-3x higher than concentrations observed prior to flooding. Net uptake of Hg by fish over the summer in the experimental reservoir was 0.25 and -0.07 microg per fish in the 2 years before flooding as compa

Bioaccumulation of mercury in pelagic freshwater food webs.

Current paradigms regarding the bioaccumulation of mercury are rooted in observations that monomethyl mercury (meHg) biomagnifies along pelagic food chains. However, mechanisms regulating the formation of meHg, its initial incorporation at the base of pelagic food chains, and its subsequent trophic transfer remain controversial. Here we use field data from 15 northern Wisconsin lakes, equilibrium aqueous speciation modeling, and statistical modeling to revisit several hypotheses about the uptake, distribution, and fate of inorganic Hg (HgII) and meHg in aquatic biota. Our field data comprise d

Responses of aquatic organisms downstream from WWTPs to disinfectants and their by-products during the COVID-19 pandemic, Wuhan.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has led to the large-scale usage of chlorinated disinfectants in cities. Disinfectants and disinfection by-products (DBPs) enter rivers through urban drainage and surface runoff. We investigated the variations in residual chlorine, DBPs, and different aquatic organisms in the Hanjiang, Fuhe, and Qinglinghe Rivers in Wuhan during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sampling sites were from the wastewater treatment plant outlets to the downstream drinking water treatment plant intakes. Total residual chlorine and DBPs (dichloromethane and trichloromethane) detected in the river w

Uptake and elimination routes of inorganic mercury and methylmercury in Daphnia magna.

Mercury (Hg) is an important environmental pollutant due to its highly toxic nature and widespread occurrence in aquatic systems. The biokinetics of Hg in zooplankton have been largely ignored in previous studies. This study examines the assimilation, dissolved uptake, and efflux of inorganic mercury [Hg(II)] and methylmercury (MeHg) in a freshwater cladoceran, Daphnia magna, and models the exposure pathways of Hg(II) and MeHg in the daphnids. The assimilation efficiencies (AEs) of both Hg species decreased significantly with increasing algal carbon concentrations. The dissolved uptake of Hg(I

Sustained stoichiometric imbalance and its ecological consequences in a large oligotrophic lake.

Considerable attention is given to absolute nutrient levels in lakes, rivers, and oceans, but less is paid to their relative concentrations, their nitrogen:phosphorus (N:P) stoichiometry, and the consequences of imbalanced stoichiometry. Here, we report 38 y of nutrient dynamics in Flathead Lake, a large oligotrophic lake in Montana, and its inflows. While nutrient levels were low, the lake had sustained high total N: total P ratios (TN:TP: 60 to 90:1 molar) throughout the observation period. N and P loading to the lake as well as loading N:P ratios varied considerably among years but showed n

Mortality and skin pathology of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) caused by exposure to the jellyfish Physalia physalis in Ireland.

In October 2019, during Tropical Storm Lorenzo, an unusual bloom of Physalia physalis (commonly known as the Portuguese man o' war) appeared on the west coast of Ireland. The jellyfish were observed aggregating in high numbers surrounding salmon pens on two Atlantic salmon farms with tentacles extending underwater through the nets into the pens. Acute skin lesions and mortality were reported as a consequence of exposure to P. physalis on both sites. The impact of noxious zooplankton species such as P. physalis may pose a significant and more frequent threat in future if increased adverse weath

Global Change Reshapes Biosynthesis of LC-PUFA in Northern Lake Food Webs.

Global change is altering the physico-chemical characteristics of northern lakes through warming, shifting nutrient regimes, and increasing dissolved organic carbon (DOC). These changes are reshaping the trophic structure and nutritional quality of freshwater food webs. To investigate how such environmental gradients influence the production and trophic transfer of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA), we quantified LC-PUFA biosynthesis in 12 boreal lakes along a trophic gradient. Bayesian models were used to relate biosynthesis to phytoplankton biomass and community composition, w

Temperature and CO2 alter trophic structure of Arctic plankton assemblages.

Driven by increasing anthropogenic CO2, the impact of ongoing climate change on the marine plankton ecosystem ultimately extends to higher trophic levels and the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nutrients. However, the impacts of multiple environmental changes on trophic interactions between predator and prey have still not been fully explored. Here we conducted incubation experiments to determine the temperature and CO2 sensitivities of marine phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing in the western Arctic Ocean, where rapid climate change is taking place. The temperature sensitiv

Mercury biomagnification in the aquaculture pond ecosystem in the Pearl River Delta.

This is the first study to investigate the rate of mercury (Hg) biomagnification in the aquaculture pond ecosystem of the Pearl River Delta (PRD), China, by analyzing total mercury (THg) and methyl mercury (MeHg) concentrations in various species of fish at different trophic levels (TLs). Species representing a gradient of trophic positions in the aquaculture pond food chains were chosen for analyzing THg and MeHg concentrations. In this study, there were two kinds of the aquaculture pond food chains: (1) omnivorous (fish feeds, zooplankton, grass carp [Ctenopharyngodon idellus], and bighead c

Temporal changes in the distribution, methylation, and bioaccumulation of newly deposited mercury in an aquatic ecosystem.

Our objective was to examine how the behavior of atmospheric mercury (Hg) deposited to boreal lake mesocosms changed over time. We added inorganic Hg enriched in a different stable isotope in each of two years, which allowed us to differentiate between Hg added in the first and second year. Although inorganic Hg and methylmercury (MeHg) continued to accumulate in sediments throughout the experiment, the availability of MeHg to the food web declined within one year. This decrease was detected in periphyton, zooplankton, and water mites, but not in gomphid larvae, amphipods, or fish. We suggest

Marine-Derived Macrolides 1990-2020: An Overview of Chemical and Biological Diversity.

Macrolides are a significant family of natural products with diverse structures and bioactivities. Considerable effort has been made in recent decades to isolate additional macrolides and characterize their chemical and bioactive properties. The majority of macrolides are obtained from marine organisms, including sponges, marine microorganisms and zooplankton, cnidarians, mollusks, red algae, bryozoans, and tunicates. Sponges, fungi and dinoflagellates are the main producers of macrolides. Marine macrolides possess a wide range of bioactive properties including cytotoxic, antibacterial, antifu

Functional redundancy and structural flexibility as contrasting plankton strategies under macrotidal pulses.

Macrotidal estuaries are hydrodynamic pulse systems that continuously reconfigure coastal environments. While seasonal dynamics are well documented, the short-term mechanisms enabling plankton to persist in these hyperdynamic habitats remain poorly understood. We investigated how planktonic communities at a tropical Amazonian Ramsar site respond to high-frequency tidal oscillations. Integrating diel sampling with random forest and SHAP modeling revealed that extreme tidal energy acts as a severe ecological filter, driving a temporal decoupling between nutrient pulses during ebb flows and phyto

Effects of the drug carbamazepine on the structure and functioning of a freshwater aquatic ecosystem.

Carbamazepine, a widely used psychotropic drug, has been frequently detected in surface waters due to its poor removal in conventional wastewater treatment and slow dissipation in aquatic systems. While carbamazepine's ecotoxicological effects have frequently been researched, most research focuses on high concentrations and single species, with only a few studies including more ecological complexity and environmentally relevant concentrations. With a mesocosm experiment, we investigated the long-term ecological effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of carbamazepine (0.001-100 µg/L
