Ophthalmologic findings in an 18-month-old boy with focal dermal hypoplasia.

Focal dermal hypoplasia is a rare X-linked dominant disorder with in utero lethality in males. Affected patients have been reported to have several different mutations in the PORCN gene on chromosome Xp11.23. Dysplastic mesodermal and ectodermal tissue causes clinical findings in the skin, skeleton, teeth, central nervous system, and eyes of affected patients. We describe the ophthalmologic findings in an 18-month-old boy with mosaicism of a novel mutation in PORCN.

Ophthalmic manifestations of mosaic Down syndrome.

PURPOSE: The cognitive and physical stigmata of mosaic Down syndrome (DS) are often considered to be less severe than complete trisomy-21 DS. In contrast to complete trisomy-21 DS, the ophthalmic manifestations in mosaic DS have rarely been reported. The aim of the present study is to report clinically significant ophthalmic abnormalities in a cohort of individuals with mosaic DS. METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional observational case series was designed to evaluate ophthalmic manifestations of mosaic DS. Individuals with mosaic DS were recruited and examined at the biennial meeting of the

GWAS Hits for Bilateral Convergent Strabismus with Exophthalmos in Holstein Cattle Using Imputed Sequence Level Genotypes.

Bilateral convergent strabismus with exophthalmos (BCSE) is a malformation of the eyes and is recognized as a mild but progressive disorder that affects cattle in the first two years of life. This most likely inherited disorder is rarely described in cattle resembling autosomal dominantly inherited forms of human progressive external ophthalmoplegia (PEO). In German Braunvieh cattle, two linked genome regions were found that could be responsible for the development and/or progression of BCSE. The goal of this study was to phenotypically characterize BCSE in Holstein cattle from Germany and Swi

[Neglected childhood strabismus: Epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects].

INTRODUCTION: In an environment where strabismus is poorly understood and management centers rare, we studied the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects of neglected childhood strabismus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study carried out from March 1st, 2013 to September 30, 2018. Neglected childhood strabismus was defined as strabismus occurring in the first 5 years of life, for which the patient was over 7-years-old at the time of first consultation. The variables studied were age at first consultation, gender, age of onset, type of strabismus, etiology of strabis

Drift of ocular alignment following strabismus surgery. Part 2: using adjustable sutures.

AIM: To measure the drift of ocular alignment following strabismus surgery utilising adjustable sutures. METHODS: 106 patients, aged 12 to 84 years, underwent adjustable suture strabismus surgery with a follow-up of 0.5-4 years (mean 24.3 months). RESULTS: For all subjects measured on distant fixation, there was a mean undercorrection drift of 8.3 (SD 2.3) prism dioptres (PD) from week 1 to 48 months postoperatively (p = 0.005). Patients with exotropia demonstrated an undercorrection drift on distant fixation from week 1 to 2 years (mean 10.1 (3.5) PD, p = 0.023). Patients who underwent rece

Spinal leptomeningeal invasion from intracranial glioblastoma multiforme.

The cases of 2 patients with meningeal and spinal spread of primary intracranial glioblastoma are reported. While such spinal meningeal spread of intracranial glioblastoma is considered rare, it appears that such involvement is not uncommon if specifically investigated. The incidence of meningeal seeding by primary intracranial glioblastoma may be expected to rise as new therapies are directed toward the primary tumor.

The morning glory disk anomaly: case report and literature review.

Twenty cases of the morning glory disc anomaly are reviewed and compared with a new case. The relationships between optic nerve hypoplasia, optic disc colobomas, and the morning glory disc are reviewed. Some pure disc colobomas and the morning glory syndrome may both be due to the optic nerve dysplasia. Associated neurological abnormalities are uncommon. The present case demonstrated a white pupillary light reflex, grossly diminished ERG, and absence of the VER.

Comparison of orbital magnetic resonance imaging in duane syndrome and abducens palsy.

PURPOSE: To help resolve the clinical ambiguity between Duane syndrome with severe abduction deficit and abducens palsy, we performed orbital magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to qualify abnormalities of the lateral rectus (LR) muscle in these entities. DESIGN: Prospective observational case series. METHODS: Orbital MRI was performed in 13 subjects with Duane syndrome (19 eyes), 10 subjects with chronic abducens palsy (10 eyes), and 10 orthotropic control subjects (18 eyes). High-resolution, surface coil, T(1)-weighted MRI was used to obtain contiguous, 2-mm thick quasi-coronal images of the

Magnetic susceptibility artifact in orbital magnetic resonance imaging.

Case report of a 16-year-old boy presenting with total hyphema due to blunt trauma to the left eye. During a subsequent cinematic MRI scan to identify salvageable lateral rectus muscle, the attachment of the left lateral rectus was obscured by a 20-mm diameter signal void. A subsequent CT scan for a suspected metallic foreign body revealed the muscle attachment after all. The theoretical explanations for this finding are discussed.

Modifications of and special operating tricks in the classical technique of surgery against strabismus.

Even nowadays the idea of most of the operations against strabismus is based on myectomy and reposition of the rectus muscles. At the Department of Ophthalmology of the University Medical School of Debrecen we use mainly these two methods of operation. At our Department we performed 1605 operations against strabismus during the last 10 years. 1269 of our patients had convergent, 336 had divergent strabismus. The majority of the operations were performed on patients less than 6 years of age, under general anesthesia. The outcome of the operation is successful if it results in a situation, in wh

New insights on partial trisomy 3q syndrome: de novo 3q27.1-q29 duplication in a newborn with pre and postnatal overgrowth and assisted reproductive conception.

BACKGROUND: Duplications of the long arm of chromosome 3 are rare, and associated to a well-defined contiguous gene syndrome known as partial trisomy 3q syndrome. It has been first described in 1966 by Falek et al., and since then around 100 patients have been reported. Clinical manifestations include characteristic facial dysmorphic features, microcephaly, hirsutism, congenital heart disease, genitourinary anomalies, hand and feet abnormalities, growth disturbances and intellectual disability. Most of cases are due to unbalanced translocations, inherited from a parent carrying a balanced aber

Perception of Trifocal IOL Performance in Young Adults with High Astigmatism and Hyperopia and its Improvement Using Small Incision Lenticule Extraction.

BACKGROUND: Hyperopia is a kind of refractive error in which incoming light is focused behind, instead of on, the retina wall due to insufficient accommodation by the lens. It is likely affected by ethnicity, geography, and a family history of hyperopia or accommodative esotropia and is categorized as low (≤ 2.00D), moderate (2.00-4.00 D), and high (> 4.00D). Beyond hyperopia refractive error, patients may have poor accommodative function or visual perceptual skills. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to present the latest approaches to planning trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) and toric trifocal IOL
