Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the brain, thought to begin during fetal development and undergo an unclear maturation process; most often do not become symptomatic until the patient reaches adulthood. Authors of recent prospective studies have suggested that relatively few patients present with neuropsychological abnormalities in the absence of hemorrhage. In general, neuropsychological evaluations in patients with AVMs have yielded mixed results with respect to localization of function, and the authors of most cognitive studies have not been able to demonstrate the nature and degree of

OBJECTIVE: The primary peak in the peristimulus time histogram (PSTH) reflects the initial rising phase of the excitatory post-synaptic potential (EPSP) evoked at the anterior horn cell. In ALS the primary peak is delayed in onset. increased in duration and desynchronized. abnormalities reflecting dysfunction of the corticomotoneurons. It is not known whether these abnormalities change over time in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
METHODS: PSTHs were constructed from changes in the firing probability of single, voluntarily activated motor units subjected to subthreshold transcranial magne

Recent research indicates that areas of the primary somatosensory (SI) and primary motor cortex show massive cortical reorganization after amputation of the upper arm, forearm or fingers. Most of these studies were carried out months or several years after amputation. In the present study, we describe cortical reorganization of areas in the SI of a patient who underwent amputation of the traumatized middle and ring fingers of his right hand 10 days before cortical magnetic source imaging data were obtained. Somatosensory-evoked magnetic fields (SEF) to mechanical stimuli to the finger tips wer

Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields and electrical potentials were measured in eight patients with unilateral neuropathic pain. After median nerve stimulation on the painful side, the amplitudes of the evoked responses were enhanced 2 to 3 times at a latency of about 100 ms compared to the responses of the contralateral, unaffected side. After posterior tibial nerve stimulation an enhancement was found at latencies around 110 ms and 150 ms. The scalp distribution of the magnetic field at the latencies of "abnormal" responses was dipolar and the responses could be ascribed to a current dipole.

Background Children born extremely preterm (EPT) are at significant risk for delays in language development. Language is important for the developing child not only because of its relationship with cognition and academic performance but also because of its impact on quality of life and relationships with peers and caregivers. Late talking, which can be reflective of expressive language difficulties, is particularly common in children born extremely preterm. Preterm infants born at NICHD Neonatal Research Network (NRN) centers have historically been enrolled in the NRN Generic Database (GDB) an

Cross-modal neuroplasticity is a well-studied phenomenon whereby in the absence of sensory input (e.g., in individuals who are deaf or blind), the sensory cortices of the affected modality are "taken over" by the unaffected sensory systems. This neuroplasticity is often coupled with changes in the dynamics of the unaffected primary sensory cortices themselves. Nonetheless, whether these cross-modal changes extend to those with mild-to-severe sensory loss where sensory input is degraded but not absent, as is the case for children who are hard-of-hearing (CHH), remains poorly understood. Beta and gamma oscillations are the dominant oscillatory activity in the human motor cortex (M1). However, their physiological basis and precise functional significance remain poorly understood. Here, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to examine the physiological basis and behavioral relevance of driving beta and gamma oscillatory activity in the human M1 using transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). tACS was applied using a sham-controlled crossover design at individualized intensity for 20 min and TMS was performed at rest (before, during, and after tACS) and durin

This article reports the application of non-linear analysis to biomagnetic signals recorded from fetal growth restriction, fetal brain activity, ovarian lesions, breast lesions, umbilical arteries, uterine myomas, and uterine arteries in a Greek population. The results were correlated with clinical findings. The biomagnetic measurements and the application of non-linear analysis are promising procedures in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

PURPOSE: Grasp recovery after C6-C7-spinal cord injury (SCI) requires learning "tenodesis grasp" whereby active wrist extension elicits passive thumb-to-forefinger and finger-to-palm flexion. Evidence that motor imagery (MI) promotes upper limb function after tetraplegia is growing, but whether MI potentiates grasp recovery in C6-C7-SCI individuals who have successfully learned the "tenodesis grasp" remains unknown.
METHODS: Six chronic stable C6-C7-SCI inpatients and six healthy control participants were included. C6-C7-SCI participants imagined grasping movements and controls visualized geo

Primate studies show slow ramping activity in posterior parietal cortex (PPC) neurons during perceptual decision-making. These findings have inspired a rich theoretical literature to account for this activity. These accounts are largely unrelated to Bayesian theories of perception and predictive coding, a related formulation of perceptual inference in the cortical hierarchy. Here, we tested a key prediction of such hierarchical inference, namely that the estimated precision (reliability) of information ascending the cortical hierarchy plays a key role in determining both the speed of decision-

Children born very prematurely (< or =32 weeks) often exhibit visual-perceptual difficulties at school-age, even in the absence of major neurological impairment. The alterations in functional brain activity that give rise to such problems, as well as the relationship between adverse neonatal experience and neurodevelopment, remain poorly understood. Repeated procedural pain-related stress during neonatal intensive care has been proposed to contribute to altered neurocognitive development in these children. Due to critical periods in the development of thalamocortical systems, the immature brai

Feature-based attention is known to operate in a spatially global manner, in that the selection of attended features is not bound to the spatial focus of attention. Here we used electromagnetic recordings in human observers to characterize the spatiotemporal signature of such global selection of an orientation feature. Observers performed a simple orientation-discrimination task while ignoring task-irrelevant orientation probes outside the focus of attention. We observed that global feature-based selection, indexed by the brain response to unattended orientation probes, is composed of separabl

The rapid advances in the technology of, and accumulation of pertinent data in, electrophysiological testing has increased exponentially in the past decade. This is attributable to continued advances in computer technology, biomedical engineering, and now the coregistration of the electrophysiological data with neuroimaging results. Knowledge of normal function and electrophysiological response at rest or on stimulation of the central and peripheral nervous systems is important to the neurosurgeon. Only by a basic understanding of normal and abnormal recordings may diagnoses and localizations

Data from experiments in MPTP monkeys as well as from invasive and non-invasive recordings in patients with Parkinson's disease suggest an abnormal synchronization of neuronal activity in the generation of resting tremor in Parkinson's disease. In six patients with tremor-dominant idiopathic Parkinson's disease, we recorded simultaneously surface electromyograms (EMGs) of hand muscles, and brain activity with a whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) system. Using a recently developed analysis tool (Dynamic Imaging of Coherent Sources; DICS), we determined cerebro-muscular and cerebro-cerebral

Myoclonus, defined as shock-like involuntary movement, may be physiological or caused by a very wide variety of hereditary and acquired conditions. Because myoclonus can originate from different disorders and lesions affecting quite varied levels of the central and peripheral nervous systems, it represents from many points of view a diagnostic challenge. Moreover, new entities have been recently individualized, such as cortical tremor, which deserve renewed attention. The aim of this review is to propose a rationale for a diagnostic approach based on clinical and electrophysiological grounds.

Letters of the alphabet have auditory (phonemic) and visual (graphemic) qualities. To investigate the neural representations of such audiovisual objects, we recorded neuromagnetic cortical responses to auditorily, visually, and audiovisually presented single letters. The auditory and visual brain activations first converged around 225 ms after stimulus onset and then interacted predominantly in the right temporo-occipito-parietal junction (280345 ms) and the left (380-540 ms) and right (450-535 ms) superior temporal sulci. These multisensory brain areas, playing a role in audiovisual integrati

Recent studies have found associations between auditory processing deficits and language disorders such as dyslexia; but whether the former cause the latter, or simply co-occur with them, is still an open question.

Recognition of insular epilepsy may sometimes be challenging due to the rapid speed at which insular seizures can spread throughout the cortex via extensive connections to surrounding cortices. The spectrum weighted adaptive directed transfer function, a multivariate causality-based effective connectivity measure, was applied to intracranial electroencephalography recordings to identify generators of seizure activity. A non-parametric test based on surrogate data testing was used to validate statistical significance of causal relations. Outflow and inflow of seizure activity were extracted fro

OBJECTIVE: Methods employed to determine hemispheric language dominance using magnetoencephalography (MEG) have differed significantly across studies in the choice of language-task, the nature of the physiological response studied, recording hardware, and source modeling methods. Our goal was to determine whether an analysis based on distributed source modeling can replicate the results of prior studies that have used dipole-modeling of event-related fields (ERFs) generated by an auditory word-recognition task to determine language dominance in patients with epilepsy.
METHODS: We analyzed dat
