Oral manifestations of human T-cell lymphotropic virus infection in adult patients from Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) was the first human retrovirus discovered and its pathogenesis is related to T cells infection. This study aimed to verify the presence of oral manifestations in a Brazilian population of patients who was seropositive for HTLV, and identify risk factors for oral manifestations. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: An assessment was made of 139 patients at the Emilio Ribas Institute of Infectious Diseases. RESULTS: A total of 112 (80.5%) patients were HTLV-1, 26 (18.7%) were HTLV-2+. About 35.2% of patients had myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesi

Predictors of rebellious behavior in childhood parental drug use, peers, school environment, and child personality.

This study assesses the interrelationships among several sets of variables and rebellious behavior in a sample of Puerto Rican and African American elementary school-aged children. The independent sets of variables (domains) were child personality attributes, parental attributes, including parental marijuana use, peer factors, school environment, and ethnic identification and discrimination. The dependent or outcome variable was children's rebellious behavior. Children and their mothers were interviewed in their homes. Pearson correlations and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were use

Maternal drug therapy: effect on fetal and neonatal growth and neurobehavior.

Fetal and neonatal growth retardation may result in long term neurological and mental morbidity. There are multiple causes for intrauterine growth retardation but one etiology proposed is maternal drugs. In many instances it is difficult to determine if the growth retardation is due to the drugs or it is due to the disease process for which the mother receives the drugs. Weight and FOC appear to be more adversely effected than length. Combination drug therapy, for example anticonvulsant drugs, results in a greater incidence in teratology, growth retardation and lower IQ than monotherapy. Neuro

Bayesian neural adjustment of inhibitory control predicts emergence of problem stimulant use.

Bayesian ideal observer models quantify individuals' context- and experience-dependent beliefs and expectations about their environment, which provides a powerful approach (i) to link basic behavioural mechanisms to neural processing; and (ii) to generate clinical predictors for patient populations. Here, we focus on (ii) and determine whether individual differences in the neural representation of the need to stop in an inhibitory task can predict the development of problem use (i.e. abuse or dependence) in individuals experimenting with stimulants. One hundred and fifty-seven non-dependent oc

An intriguing association between dental and mental pathology in addicted and control subjects: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Recent clinical studies suggest that substance use may be associated with an acceleration of the ageing process, possibly related to a deficit of stem cell number or function. As this clinic had access to both medical and drug dependent patients, we tested the hypothesis that there may be an association between previously identified deficits. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was performed looking at both dental and mental dysfunction. Both a dental index (DI) and a mental index (MI) were defined as previously described and utilised as summary measures of such pathology. FINDINGS

[Acute cardiovascular complications of cocaine. About two case reports].

Concerning any socioprofessional category, some addictive drugs like cocaine are responsible for many complications. The authors relate two case reports of young patients who suffered from cardiovascular accidents due to this drug. The first one was diagnosed with an ischemic stroke caused by carotid artery dissection and a leg distal vascular obliteration, the second one with a myocardial infarction with transient left ventricular dysfunction. Through these two case reports, the authors take stock of the pathophysiological and therapeutic knowledge of cardiovascular accidents after cocaine in

The etiology of community-acquired pneumonia at an urban public hospital: influence of human immunodeficiency virus infection and initial severity of illness.

In a prospective study, the etiology of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) was investigated among consecutive patients admitted to an academic, urban public hospital in Seattle. The study population was uniquely young, was predominantly male, and had high rates of homelessness, cigarette smoking, alcoholism, injection drug use, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Leading causes of CAP among HIV-negative patients were aspiration, followed by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Legionella species, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Among HIV-positive patients, Pneumocystis carinii, Mycobacterium tub

Trajectories of Prescription Drug Misuse Among US Adults From Ages 18 to 50 Years.

IMPORTANCE: US adults born from 1965 to 1996 had high exposure to controlled medications, yet little is known about how this exposure has affected them over time. Prescription drug misuse (PDM) has increased among adults in the past 2 decades, with related increases in emergency department visits, overdoses, and deaths. OBJECTIVES: To identify 32-year PDM trajectories involving opioids, stimulants, and sedatives or tranquilizers and to examine associations between these PDM trajectories and substance use disorder (SUD) symptoms in adulthood as well as between baseline characteristics and PDM

Lifestyle considerations in multiple myeloma.

As the prognosis for multiple myeloma (MM) has significantly improved and patients remain on therapy longer, there is a need for supportive care interventions to optimize patient quality of life (QOL) and functional status over the course of cancer treatment. MM is characterized by a significant symptom burden and a relatively lower QOL compared to other cancers. This review evaluates the role of healthy lifestyle behaviors in improving both the physical functioning and psychological well-being of the MM population. We (1) describe the current literature on physical activity, weight management

The Persistence of Stigma and Other Challenges Experienced by Medical Cannabis Users: A Thematic Synthesis of Qualitative Studies.

BackgroundThe legislation, practices, and guidance shaping patient and professional access to medical cannabis (MC) for managing chronic pain and other conditions vary widely across jurisdictions. Despite promising evidence of effectiveness, challenges persist for those trying to access or prescribe MC. Little is known about how patients navigate these complex environments. We aimed to understand the evidence related to personal lived experiences associated with using MC for chronic pain and other conditions in negotiating these challenges.SummaryWe used a framework by Thomas and Harden for co
