Development and psychometric properties of the tobacco and nicotine consequences scale (TANCS) to screen for cigarette and e-cigarette misuse in community settings.

INTRODUCTION: To date, there are no existing measures of tobacco or nicotine misuse (i.e., negative consequences). The goal of the present study was to develop and test the psychometric properties of a novel scale, the Tobacco and Nicotine Consequences Scale (TANCS) to assess tobacco and nicotine misuse among cigarette smokers and e-cig users. METHODS: This cross-sectional study collected data using an anonymous survey to assess tobacco and nicotine use expectancies, behaviors, and negative consequences of use. Of the 607 participants who attempted the survey, 491 participants (80.8%) complet

Generational Differences in Tobacco Use Patterns: Results from Wave 6 (2021) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study (United States).

OBJECTIVE: Cigarette use has declined over the last decade, yet electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) have gained popularity with younger individuals. Although age differences have been established, it is unclear if there are generational differences in ENDS and cigarette use patterns. The objective of this study was to describe tobacco use patterns by generation and examine factors associated with these patterns. METHOD: This study used data from the sixth wave of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study (PATH; N = 25,199). Adjusted multinomial logistic regression models w

Sex-specific trends in patterns of tobacco and nicotine use among young people in Denmark from 2020 to 2023: A multigroup latent class analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Research on tobacco and nicotine use patterns lacks insights into the diverse nature of tobacco and nicotine use across sexes, particularly how use patterns cluster differently over time between males and females. This study examines the changing patterns of tobacco and nicotine use among Danish young people from 2020 to 2023, focusing on sex differences. METHOD: Data were collected from five waves of repeated cross-sectional surveys among individuals aged 15-29 (n = 45,473). Multi-group latent class analysis (LCA) was applied to explore differences in tobacco and nicotine use p

Use of Tobacco and Alternative Nicotine Products Among People with HIV: A Cross-Sectional Multicenter Survey.

People with HIV (PWH) have a higher prevalence of smoking compared to the general population, which contributes to an increased risk of non-AIDS-related comorbidities. Heated tobacco products (HTPs) and electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have added complexity to tobacco use behaviors. This study aimed to investigate smoking habits, including HTPs and e-cigarettes use and to describe patterns of tobacco use. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among PWH attending five Italian University Hospitals. An anonymous questionnaire collected information on smoking status, history, use of HTPs and e

E-cigarette use among early adolescent tobacco cigarette smokers: testing the disruption and entrenchment hypotheses in two longitudinal cohorts.

OBJECTIVE: Using longitudinal data from two large-scale cohorts in the UK and USA, we examine whether e-cigarette use steers adolescent early smokers away from tobacco cigarettes (disruption hypothesis) or deepens early patterns of tobacco smoking (entrenchment hypothesis) in comparison with early smokers who do not use e-cigarettes. METHODS: Youth who smoked tobacco cigarettes by early adolescence (before age 15) were selected from the ongoing UK Millennium Cohort Study (n=1090) and the US Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (n=803) study. In regression models, the focal predictor wa

Cigarette smoking, e-cigarette use, and sociodemographic correlates of mental health and tobacco-related disease risk in the All of Us Research Program.

SIGNIFICANCE: Research on the conditions under which electronic cigarette (EC) use produces a net reduction in the population harm attributable to combusted cigarette (CC) use requires the triangulation of information from cohort(s) of smokers, non-smokers, EC users, and dual-users of all varieties. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This project utilizes data from the All of Us Research Program to contrast a panel of wellness and disease-risk indicators across a range of self-reported tobacco-use profiles, including smokers, current, and former EC users. This article focuses on the tobacco use history a

Predictors of youth e-cigarette use susceptibility in a U.S. nationally representative sample.

OBJECTIVES: Given that nicotine is one of the most addictive substances and that adolescents who are exposed to nicotine via e-cigarettes can progress to conventional cigarette smoking, there is a need to identify youth who are susceptible to e-cigarette use and prevent them from initiating e-cigarette use. Susceptibility to e-cigarette use, defined as the absence of a firm decision not to use e-cigarettes, is a useful concept that can be used to predict e-cigarette initiation and identify youth who have high risk of initiating e-cigarettes. This study was conducted to investigate factors that

Patterns of E-cigarette Use Frequency-National Adult Tobacco Survey, 2012-2014.

INTRODUCTION: Accounting for occasional or intermittent e-cigarette use has yielded higher estimates of current use among U.S. adults. However, frequency of e-cigarette use by population subgroups is not well described. This study assessed e-cigarette use frequency by sociodemographic characteristics and other tobacco product use among U.S. adults. METHODS: This study analyzed combined data from the 2012-2013 (n=60,192) and 2013-2014 (n=75,233) National Adult Tobacco Survey, a telephone-based survey of U.S. adults aged ≥18 years, to assess frequency of e-cigarette use (daily, some days, rarel

Beliefs about the relative harmfulness of electronic cigarettes compared with cigarettes among adults: findings from the ITC Israel Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Electronic cigarettes (ECs) have gained substantial popularity, yet misperceptions that ECs are equally or more harmful than combustible cigarettes are increasing. In Israel, where smoking prevalence remains high, particularly among lower socioeconomic groups and the Arab minority, population-level perceptions of EC harms are unknown. METHODS: Data were drawn from the International Tobacco Control (ITC) Israel Survey, a nationally representative survey of 659 adults conducted in March-June 2022. The study assessed perceptions of (1) the relative harmfulness of ECs compared with
