A western gray whale mitigation and monitoring program for a 3-D seismic survey, Sakhalin Island, Russia.

The introduction of anthropogenic sounds into the marine environment can impact some marine mammals. Impacts can be greatly reduced if appropriate mitigation measures and monitoring are implemented. This paper concerns such measures undertaken by Exxon Neftegas Limited, as operator of the Sakhalin-1 Consortium, during the Odoptu 3-D seismic survey conducted during 17 August-9 September 2001. The key environmental issue was protection of the critically endangered western gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus), which feeds in summer and fall primarily in the Piltun feeding area off northeast Sakhali

Mortality and long-term exposure to source-specific PM2·5: evidence from a national cohort study in China.

BACKGROUND: The hazardous effects of fine particulate matter (PM2·5) could vary by source. However, evidence regarding the long-term effects of source-specific PM2·5 on mortality is scarce, particularly in countries with high levels of pollution. We aimed to assess the associations between long-term exposure to source-specific PM2·5 and mortality in China, a low-income and middle-income country with high concentrations of PM2·5. METHODS: This nationwide cohort study used data from the 2010-11 wave of the China Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Surveillance (CCDRFS) project, which surveyed a geo

A novel 2-oxopyrrolidine derivative (LN-53) efficiently induces Nrf-2 signaling pathway activation in human epidermal keratinocytes.

BACKGROUND: The skin is a pivotal organ that serves as a physical barrier, protecting the body from harmful substances such as pathogens, allergens, and other environmental irritants. Chronic inflammation in the skin, along with the anthropogenic effects, can cause reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction. Prolonged exposure to elevated ROS levels and inadequate antioxidant defenses in the skin can contribute to the onset of various skin disorders. The nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor-2 (Nrf-2) signaling pathway plays a key role in enhancing antioxidant capacity by promoting the p

Multi-level fuzzy comprehensive evaluation of the bearing deformation process and stability of the water-isolated coal pillar under mining.

The long-term stability of water-isolated coal pillars in water-accumulated goafs within ecologically fragile mining areas is severely threatened by the coupled effects of mine water immersion and mining disturbance. In this study, triaxial loading and triaxial loading with unilateral unloading experiments were conducted to simulate the complex stress paths experienced by water-isolated coal pillars throughout their service period. Based on the bearing deformation behavior and failure mechanisms of water-immersed coal samples, the main factors influencing the stability of water-isolated coal p

Urban traffic dynamics and their impact on CO₂ emissions and temperature: a three-year GNSS-based study during the COVID-19 pandemic in Jakarta.

BACKGROUND AND METHOD: Urban traffic and air pollution remain strongly interconnected challenges for big cities. In Jakarta, transportation activity remains one of the primary contributors to carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions and urban heat stress, worsened by high-density land use and limited integration of public transportation. The COVID-19 pandemic temporarily transformed these dynamics through the policy of social mobility restriction; this study therefore aims to assess how changes in traffic volume affect CO₂ intensity and thermal level across different traffic policy and behavioral contex

Influence of COVID-19 lockdown on river water quality and assessment of environmental health in an industrialized belt of southern Western Ghats, India.

The COVID-19 pandemic and sudden lockdown have severely hampered the country's economic growth and socio-cultural activities while imparting a positive effect on the overall fitness of the environment especially air and water resources. Increased urbanization and rapid industrialization have led to rising pollution and deterioration of rivers and associated sectors such as agriculture, domestic and commercial needs. However, various available studies in different parts of the country indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the entire ecosystem. But it is noted that studies are lacking

Evaluating environmental impact and remediation potential: Bioaccumulation and translocation of potentially toxic elements in three native halophyte species in the wetlands of the Bouregreg estuary in Morocco.

This study in the Bouregreg estuary examines the accumulation and seasonal variation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in three native halophytes: Halimione portulacoides, Salicornia perennis, and Spartina maritima. PTEs concentrations of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and vanadium (V), remained below known phytotoxic thresholds, showing high tolerance across all species. S. maritima showed the highest accumulation, likely due to habitat-related factors such as submersion duration and sediment conditions. Compared to a construction-period data, current findings show in

Effects of precipitation, heat, and drought on incidence and expansion of coccidioidomycosis in western USA: a longitudinal surveillance study.

BACKGROUND: Drought is an understudied driver of infectious disease dynamics. Amidst the ongoing southwestern North American megadrought, California (USA) is having the driest multi-decadal period since 800 CE, exacerbated by anthropogenic warming. In this study, we aimed to examine the influence of drought on coccidioidomycosis, an emerging infectious disease in southwestern USA. METHODS: We analysed California census tract-level surveillance data from 2000 to 2020 using generalised additive models and distributed monthly lags on precipitation and temperature. We then developed an ensemble p

Biological activity and physicochemical parameters of marine halogenated natural products 2,3,3',4,4',5,5'-heptachloro-1'-methyl-1,2'-bipyrrole and 2,4,6-tribromoanisole.

Physicochemical parameters (vapor pressure, water solubility, Henry's law constant) and biological activities of two halogenated natural products frequently detected in marine samples and food were determined. Synthetic 2,3,3',4,4',5,5'-heptachloro-1'-methyl-1,2'-bipyrrole (Q1) and 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA) were available in pure form. The physicochemical parameters were in the range of anthropogenic chlorinated compounds of concern. The aqueous solubilities at 25 degrees C (S(w,25)) of Q1 and TBA were 4.6 microg/L and 12,200 microg/L, respectively, whereas subcooled liquid vapor pressures w

Genetic Polymorphisms and Antioxidant Reactions in Prostate Cancer.

This review aggregates the latest reports on the role of environmental factors in the male reproductive system and cancer development. We analyzed environmental pollution-related studies and disorders of mechanisms responsible for defense against the impact of xenobiotics on prostate cancer. We focused on polymorphisms that, when exposed to environmental stressors, might exacerbate an organism's defense mechanisms against the effects of xenobiotics. It is well known that environmental factors, such as toxic heavy metal pollution, xenobiotic exposure, and undue and differentiated stressors, aff

Aquatic assessment of the chelating ability of Silica-stabilized magnetite nanocomposite to lead nitrate toxicity with emphasis to their impact on hepatorenal, oxidative stress, genotoxicity, histopathological, and bioaccumulation parameters in Oreochromis niloticus and Clarias gariepinus.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, anthropogenic activities have released heavy metals and polluted the aquatic environment. This study investigated the ability of the silica-stabilized magnetite (Si-M) nanocomposite materials to dispose of lead nitrate (Pb(NO3)2) toxicity in Nile tilapia and African catfish. RESULTS: Preliminary toxicity tests were conducted and determined the median lethal concentration (LC50) of lead nitrate (Pb(NO3)2) to Nile tilapia and African catfish to be 5 mg/l. The sublethal concentration, equivalent to 1/20 of the 96-hour LC50 Pb(NO3)2, was selected for our experiment. F

Recent Nitrogen Storage and Accumulation Rates in Mangrove Soils Exceed Historic Rates in the Urbanized San Juan Bay Estuary (Puerto Rico, United States).

Tropical mangrove forests have been described as "coastal kidneys," promoting sediment deposition and filtering contaminants, including excess nutrients. Coastal areas throughout the world are experiencing increased human activities, resulting in altered geomorphology, hydrology, and nutrient inputs. To effectively manage and sustain coastal mangroves, it is important to understand nitrogen (N) storage and accumulation in systems where human activities are causing rapid changes in N inputs and cycling. We examined N storage and accumulation rates in recent (1970 - 2016) and historic (1930 - 19

Enhanced phosphorus removal from anoxic water using oxygen-carrying iron-rich biochar: Combined roles of adsorption and keystone taxa.

Anthropogenic enrichment of phosphorus (P) in water environment can cause eutrophication, harmful algal blooms, and water quality deterioration. Adsorbents are often used for the removal and recovery of P from water, however, P is highly susceptible to re-release in anoxic benthic environments. As a response, this study prepared oxygen-carrying iron-rich biochar (O-Fe-BC) as an effective oxygen micro-nanobubble carrier (Q = 8.7024 cm³/g STP at 1.5 MPa) and P adsorbent (qm = 16.7097 mg P/g, q0.1 = 3.1974 mg P/g). Over the 90-day experimental period with O-Fe-BC, dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in

A novel flood risk mapping approach with machine learning considering geomorphic and socio-economic vulnerability dimensions.

Quantifying flood hazards by employing hydraulic/hydrodynamic models for flood risk mapping is a widely implemented non-structural flood management strategy. However, the unavailability of multi-domain and multi-dimensional input data and expensive computational resources limit its application in resource-constrained regions. The fifth and sixth IPCC assessment reports recommend including vulnerability and exposure components along with hazards for capturing risk on human-environment systems from natural and anthropogenic sources. In this context, the present study showcases a novel flood risk

A Systematic Review of Changes in Marine Mammal Health in North America, 1972-2012: The Need for a Novel Integrated Approach.

Marine mammals are often cited as "sentinels of ocean health" yet accessible, synthesized data on their health changes that could effectively warn of ocean health changes are rare. The objectives of this study were to 1) perform a systematic review of published cases of marine mammal disease to determine spatial and temporal trends in disease from 1972-2012, including changes in regions and taxa affected and specific causes; and 2) compare numbers of published cases of neoplasia with known, hospital-based neoplasia records to explore the causes of discrepancy between numbers of published cases
