Anatomical study of the connections of the primary auditory area in the rat.

The aim of the present study was to identify in the rat the overall input-output pattern of connections of the primary auditory field, with special attention to the topographical organization of the geniculocortical auditory projection. By using cytoarchitectural criteria, three temporal cortical fields were distinguished in the rat: Te1, Te2, and Te3. The primary auditory field Te1 is characterized by a relatively specific differentiation of its layers when compared with other temporal fields. The afferent and efferent connections of Te1 were identified by using the retrograde and anterograde

High Light Intensity Potentiates Bacillus amyloliquefaciens PMB05-Associated Plant Immunity and Bacterial Soft Rot Control in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Bacterial soft rot, caused by Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum, affects numerous vegetable crops. Beneficial microbes like Bacillus amyloliquefaciens PMB05 offer a sustainable alternative to traditional copper- or antibiotic-based controls, which risks the development of pathogen resistance. Bacillus amyloliquefaciens PMB05 enhances disease resistance to soft rot by intensifying PAMP-triggered immunity (PTI). Although our previous research showed that PMB05-intensified PTI correlates with a reduced photosynthetic electron transport rate under high light conditions, it remains uncl

Hydroxycinnamic Acid Amides Emerge as Multifunctional Molecules Involved in Regeneration and Volatile Signalling During Wound Responses.

Hydroxycinnamic acid amides (HCAAs) are phenylpropanoid-derived metabolites traditionally associated with antimicrobial defence and cell wall reinforcement during plant-pathogen interactions. However, their contribution to plant responses to mechanical injury, particularly in wound healing and damage-induced signalling, remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the wound-induced responses in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) using a 35S::THT system in which tyramine hydroxycinnamoyl transferase (THT), a key enzyme controlling HCAAs biosynthesis, is overexpressed. By integrating met

Linking Symptom Phenotypes to Patterns of White Matter Injury in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: A Latent Class Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) is a common public health concern with potential long-term consequences, yet its underlying pathophysiology remains poorly understood. Clinical heterogeneity of individuals having diverse extent and array of symptoms has impeded the identification of reliable imaging biomarkers. Traditional group-level analyses may obscure biologically meaningful subtypes. This study uses latent class analysis (LCA) to classify MTBI subjects into symptom-defined subgroups and examines corresponding WM microstructural alterations using advanced diffusio

Functional and proteomic characterization of Phytophthora nicotianae extracellular vesicles and putative cargo-sorting signals in filamentous pathogens.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are lipid-bound structures that transport bioactive molecules and are increasingly recognized as key mediators of plant-pathogen interactions. Although EV secretion has been reported in filamentous pathogens, their roles in plant immunity, microbial interactions and cargo-sorting mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study aimed to characterize the functional roles and composition of EVs produced by P. nicotianae, and to investigate shared EV-associated protein categories and putative cargo-sorting signals, including KFERQ-like (Lys-Phe-Glu-Arg-Gln) motifs, acr

Paternal lineage effects of prenatal ethanol exposure: Offspring neuroanatomy and behavior in a multigenerational mouse model of FASD.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) encompass a range of phenotypes in offspring exposed to ethanol via maternal consumption during pregnancy. In a series of studies, our laboratory identified deleterious effects of prenatal ethanol exposure (PrEE) in our FASD mouse model. The first filial generation (F1) of PrEE offspring exhibited abnormal neocortical gene expression, ectopic intraneocortical connectivity, altered neuroanatomy, and disrupted behavior. Our results suggest that PrEE can induce transgenerational transmission of the abnormal phenotypes, potentially via epigenetic

Multiterritory Acute Ischemic Stroke with Bilateral Middle Cerebellar Peduncle T2/FLAIR Hyperintensities in the Setting of a Fatal Systemic Arterial Thrombotic Process: A Case Report.

Ischemic stroke under 55 years presents a distinct etiological challenge with higher prevalence of non-atherosclerotic causes. We report a fatal case of multiterritory acute cerebral infarction with bilateral middle cerebellar peduncle (MCP) T2/FLAIR hyperintensities in a 50-year-old woman, pursuing two educational objectives: (1) provide a radiological framework for interpreting bilateral MCP T2/FLAIR hyperintensities without diffusion restriction in the context of basilar occlusion; and (2) illustrate a diagnostic approach to multiterritory arterial thrombosis concurrent with systemic infect

Etiology-specific diagnosis of cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum (CLOCC) in a single-center pediatric cohort: diagnostic challenges and outcome characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical and radiological characteristics of cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum (CLOCC) in a pediatric cohort. METHODS: A pediatric CLOCC cohort consisting of 16 patients was derived from the radiology database of a single tertiary institution, Ege Children's Hospital. The CLOCC diagnosis was based on previously established magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) criteria by Starkey et al.: (i) a small, round lesion centered in the splenium; (ii) a lesion centered in the splenium extending laterally through adjacent callosal fibers; or (iii) a lesion located posterio

Splenial angle on axial T1 and fluid-attenuated inversion-recovery MRI images and idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus.

OBJECTIVES: The splenial angle (SA), measured on axial DTI colour fractional anisotropy MRI, outperformed the callosal angle (CA) in predicting idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) patients from those with Alzheimer's dementia, Parkinson's disease (PD), and healthy controls (HC). We investigated its reliability and classification performance on more commonly acquired T1 magnetization-prepared rapid gradient-echo (MPRAGE) and fluid-attenuated inversion-recovery (FLAIR) images. METHODS: Splenial angle was measured on axial MPRAGE and FLAIR images in 57 subjects (19 NPH, PD and HC each

Structural brain abnormalities in Pallister-Killian syndrome: a neuroimaging study of 31 children.

BACKGROUND: Pallister-Killian syndrome (PKS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by mosaic tetrasomy of 12p with wide neurological involvement. Intellectual disability, developmental delay, behavioral problems, epilepsy, sleep disturbances, and brain malformations have been described in most individuals, with a broad phenotypic spectrum. This observational study, conducted through brain MRI scan analysis on a cohort of patients with genetically confirmed PKS, aims to systematically investigate the neuroradiological features of this syndrome and identify the possible existence of a typical patter

Physiological and molecular mechanisms of boron in alleviating cadmium toxicity in Capsicum annuum.

Soil cadmium (Cd) contamination threatens food safety and human health, particularly in developing countries. Previously, we have proposed that boron (B) could reduce Cd uptake and accumulation in hot peppers (Capsicum annuum) by regulating the expression of genes related to Cd transport in roots. However, only few studies have examined the role of B in plant leaves under Cd stress. It is unclear how B induces the expression of relevant genes and metabolites in hot pepper leaves and to what extent B is involved in leaf growth and Cd accumulation. The purpose of this study was to investigate th

Auditory spatial cueing reduces neglect after right-hemispheric stroke: A proof of concept study.

Spatial neglect after right-hemispheric stroke, characterized by the failure to attend or respond to the contralesional space, is a strong negative outcome predictor. Neglect is a supramodal syndrome affecting not only the visual but also the auditory modality. Preliminary studies used this audio-visual cross-modal effect to show short-lasting effects on attention towards the neglected space. The aim of the present study was to introduce a new technique of auditory stimulation combining the unspecific effect of music (i.e., patients choose their preferred music) with the effects of auditory sp

Quantitative imaging features predict spinal tap response in normal pressure hydrocephalus.

PURPOSE: Gait improvement following high-volume lumbar puncture (HVLP) and continuous lumbar drain (cLD) is widely used to predict shunt response in patients with suspected normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). Here, we investigate differences in MRI volumetric and traditional measures between HVLP/cLD responders and non-responders to identify imaging features that may help predict HVLP/cLD response. METHODS: Eighty-two patients with suspected NPH were studied retrospectively. Gait testing was performed before and immediately/24 h/72 h after HVLP/cLD. A positive response was defined as improve

Midbrain-hindbrain involvement in septo-optic dysplasia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Midbrain-hindbrain involvement in septo-optic dysplasia has not been well described, despite reported mutations of genes regulating brain stem patterning. We aimed to describe midbrain-hindbrain involvement in patients with septo-optic dysplasia and to identify possible clinical-neuroimaging correlations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using MR imaging, we categorized 38 patients (21 males) based on the presence (group A, 21 patients) or absence (group B, 17 patients) of visible brain stem anomalies. We measured height and anteroposterior diameter of midbrain, pons, and medull

Can syndromic macrocephaly be diagnosed in utero?

OBJECTIVES: To compare the outcomes of fetuses with apparently isolated macrocephaly and those with associated findings, and to compare prenatal findings with postnatal diagnoses in children with syndromic macrocephaly. METHODS: We reviewed the files of all patients referred for suspected fetal macrocephaly, during a 10-year period from 2000, to a large prenatal diagnosis unit with expertise in fetal neurology counseling. Macrocephaly was defined as head circumference (HC) > 2 SDs of the norm. Patients with confirmed HC > 2 SD were identified and contacted, and their development was evaluated

MeCP2 functions largely cell-autonomously, but also non-cell-autonomously, in neuronal maturation and dendritic arborization of cortical pyramidal neurons.

Rett syndrome is a human neurodevelopmental disorder presenting almost exclusively in female infants; it is the second most common cause of mental retardation in girls, after Down's syndrome. The identification in 1999 that mutation of the methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2) gene on the X chromosome causes Rett syndrome has led to a rapid increase in understanding of the neurobiological basis of the disorder. However, much about the functional role of MeCP2, and the cellular phenotype of both patients with Rett syndrome and mutant Mecp2 mouse models, remains unclear. Building on prior work in
