WIPI2 is a member of the human WIPI protein family (seven-bladed b-propeller proteins binding phosphatidylinositols, PROPPINs), which play a pivotal role in autophagy and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several neurological conditions. The homozygous WIPI2 variant c.745G>A; p.(Val249Met) (NM_015610.4) has recently been associated with a neurodevelopmental disorder in a single family. Using exome sequencing and Sanger segregation analysis, here, two novel homozygous WIPI2 variants [c.551T>G; p.(Val184Gly) and c.724C>T; p.(Arg242Trp) (NM_015610.4)] were identified in four individuals

Background: Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is a heterogeneous condition. Based on clinical symptoms, aMCI could be categorized into single-domain aMCI (SD-aMCI, only memory deficit) and multi-domain aMCI (MD-aMCI, one or more cognitive domain deficit). As core intrinsic functional architecture, inter-hemispheric connectivity maintains many cognitive abilities. However, few studies investigated whether SD-aMCI and MD-aMCI have different inter-hemispheric connectivity pattern. Methods: We evaluated inter-hemispheric connection pattern using fluorine-18 positron emission tomography - f

The Chiari malformations are a group of central nervous system defects that involve the posterior cranial fossa. The clinical complaints range from headache, sensory changes, vertigo, ataxia, and imbalance to hearing loss. In patients with Chiari malformation, only those with type I malformation were born grossly normal, the neurological dysfunction developing gradually as they grew up, which spurred our interest. From August 1990 to September 1998, seven patients received surgical intervention at Kaohsiung Medical College Hospital under the impression of Chiari malformations. There were 4 mal

The acyl-CoA-binding domain-containing protein 6 (ACBD6) is ubiquitously expressed, plays a role in the acylation of lipids and proteins and regulates the N-myristoylation of proteins via N-myristoyltransferase enzymes (NMTs). However, its precise function in cells is still unclear, as is the consequence of ACBD6 defects on human pathophysiology. Using exome sequencing and extensive international data sharing efforts, we identified 45 affected individuals from 28 unrelated families (consanguinity 93%) with bi-allelic pathogenic, predominantly loss-of-function (18/20) variants in ACBD6. We gene

BACKGROUND: Neurosarcoidosis manifests symptomatically in 5% of patients with sarcoidosis and diagnosis can be challenging if not clinically suspected. Cerebral mass-like presentation of neurosarcoidosis rarely reported in the literature. We presented a woman with neurosarcoidosis who had a cerebral mass-like lesion which completely disappeared after medical treatment.
DISCUSSION: A 37-year-old woman with history of pulmonary sarcoidosis referred to the emergency service of our hospital with a one-month history of progressive dizziness, nausea and seeing flashing lights. At neurologic examina

UNLABELLED: Patients with cutaneous markers in the lumbo-sacral region as well as infants with bladder and bowel dysfunction, orthopedic anomalies and progressive neurological dysfunction are at risk for spinal dysraphism and tethered cord. Three types of spinal dysraphism can be distinguished: Type I - open spinal dysraphisms with a non-skin covered back mass; type II - closed spinal dysraphisms with a skin covered back mass; type III - occult spinal dysraphisms without a back mass. All spinal dysraphisms can be associated with a tethered cord, characterized by a low position of the conus med

A number of extrastriate visual areas in the parieto-occipital cortex are known from single-cell recordings of the macaque monkey to be involved in the coding of eye-position signals in the brain. These are important for the accurate location of visual objects in extrapersonal space. It can be predicted that these areas will show increased activation during the performance of eye movements at high frequency. In the present study PET and measurements of the regional distribution of cerebral blood flow (rCBF) were used as indirect measures of neural activity. Two independent groups of normal vol

We used positron emission tomography to study motor learning by trial and error. Subjects learned sequences of eight finger movements. Tones generated by a computer told the subjects whether any particular move was correct or incorrect. A control condition was used in which the subjects generated moves, but there was no feedback to indicate success or failure, and so on learning occurred. In this condition (free selection) the subjects were required to make a finger movement on each trial and to vary the movements randomly over trials. The subjects had a free choice of which finger to move on

The authors report on 51 infants with intracranial tumours treated in an eleven-year period; these infants represent 13% of the total population of children with intracranial tumours who have been operated on in the same institution during the same period of time. Males (28 cases) were slightly more frequent. Astrocytomas (17 cases), medulloblastomas (12 cases), and ependymal tumours (5 cases) were the commonest histologic types. Signs and symptoms of increased intracranial pressure were by far the most frequent clinical manifestations, followed by seizure disorders. Thirty tumours were locali

The classification of the developmental malformations of the posterior fossa associated with hydrocephalus proposed by Chiari is systematic and comprehensive. It is based upon the relative position of cerebellum and brainstem in relation to the foramen magnum and the upper cervical canal. Types I to II are degrees of a similar abnormality in which a conical deformity of the posterior midline cerebellum and the elongated brainstem lie at or below the foramen magnum. In the Type IV deformity, in contrast, the cerebellum and brainstem lie fully within the posterior fossa and their position in rel

INDICATIONS CORRIDOR AND LIMITS OF EXPOSURE: The telovelar or transcerebellomedullary fissure approach can provide wide exposure of the cerebellomedullary fissure and fourth ventricle by separating the natural plane between the medulla and cerebellum. 1-5.
ANATOMIC ESSENTIALS NEED FOR PREOPERATIVE PLANNING AND ASSESSMENT: The cerebellar tonsil is attached to the adjacent cerebellum only by the tonsillar peduncle at its superolateral edge. 2 The posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) runs in the cerebellomedullary fissure, usually making its caudal and cranial loops. 6,7.

BACKGROUND: Brain tumours are the most common solid tumours in childhood. Half of these tumours occur in the posterior fossa, where surgical removal is complicated by the risk of cerebellar mutism syndrome, of which postoperative speech impairment (POSI) is a cardinal symptom, in up to 25% of patients. The surgical approach to midline tumours, mostly undertaken by transvermian or telovelar routes, has been proposed to influence the risk of POSI. We aimed to investigate the risk of developing POSI, the time course of its resolution, and its association with surgical approach and other clinical

BACKGROUND: Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD) is a condition often linked to excessive health anxiety and somatic symptoms. In recent years, studies have found associations between the cerebellum and various mental illnesses, including SSD. However, the microstructure of cerebellar subregions in SSD using diffusion magnetic resonance imaging has not been fully defined.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study, that included 30 SSD patients and 30 age- and gender-matched healthy controls to investigate the microstructure of the cerebellum using diffusion magnetic resonance imaging. SSD diagnosis

BACKGROUND: Developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEE) encompass a group of rare diseases with hereditary and genetic causes as well as acquired causes such as brain injuries or metabolic abnormalities. The phosphofurin acidic cluster sorting protein 2 (PACS2) is a multifunctional protein with nuclear gene expression. The first cases of the recurrent c.625G>A pathogenic variant of PACS2 gene were reported in 2018 by Olson et al. Since then, several case reports and case series have been published.
METHODS: We performed a systematic review of the PUBMED and SCOPUS databases using Prefe

INTRODUCTION: Fetal imaging has improved with the development of faster magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences, obviating the requirement for sedation. It is useful in characterising abnormality of the central nervous system in fetuses with abnormal or equivocal antenatal ultrasound findings. We reviewed all cases of fetal brain and spine MRI performed in our institution.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All cases of fetal central nervous system MRI imaging from May 2006 to December 2008 were retrospectively reviewed, including fetal MRI, postnatal MRI and autopsy findings.
RESULTS: Thirty-one fet

BACKGROUND: The neurobiological features of pediatric bipolar disorder (BD) are largely unknown. Children and adolescents with BD may be important to study with functional neuroimaging techniques because of their unique status of early-onset BD and high familial loading for the disorder. Neuroimaging studies of adults with BD have implicated the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) in the development of this disorder.
OBJECTIVES: To study children and adolescents with BD via functional magnetic resonance imaging using cognitive and affective tasks and to
