OBJECTIVES: To examine the incidence, clinical and radiologic findings, and response to treatment of renovascular hypertension (RVHT) in moyamoya disease (MMD).
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of medical records in six RVHT cases (8.3%) among 72 MMD patients observed from November 1987 to December 1995.
RESULTS: The age at onset of MMD ranged from 9 months to 7 years 1 month (mean, 3.3 years). The most common initial manifestation of MMD was transient ischemic attack. Hypertension was detected between 4 years 4 months and 12 years 3 months (mean, 7.87 years). Unstimulated plasma renin acti

PURPOSE: To evaluate stroke risk assessment of balloon test occlusion of the internal carotid artery (ICA) with enlarged haemodynamic monitoring prior to permanent ICA occlusion.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 24 patients with cervical metastasis (n = 18), cavernous meningiomas (n = 3) or inoperable cavernous aneurysms (n = 3) were examined. The test occlusion was monitored by EEG, neurological examinations and transcranial Doppler sonography of the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery with evaluation of the cerebrovascular reserve capacity. Additionally 99mTc-HMPAO-SPECT imaging was added showing the p

Parkinsonian variant of multiple system atrophy (MSA-P) clinically presents as autonomic dysfunction with parkinsonian features. Parkinsonian features include bradykinesia, rigidity, tremor, postural instability and poor levo-dopa response. Neuropathologically, MSA-P is characterized by selective neuronal loss and gliosis mainly affecting the putamen and caudate nucleus, substantia nigra, olivopontocerebellar pathway and intermediolateral cell column of the spinal cord. Therefore, the target of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is focused on signal changes or volume reduction on putamen, includ

In a 12-month period, metastatic cancer was diagnosed in eight patients. Six of them presented with pain mimicking toothache, temporomandibular joint disorders or trigeminal neuralgia, while two showed osteopenic bone lesions in the panoramic radiography, and perimandibular swelling. Anesthesia of the lower lip was the only common clinical feature. In seven of the eight patients, a whole body bone scintigraphy and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) of the skull in combination with a whole body and SPECT anti-granulocyte (Tc-99m MAK 250/183) bone marrow scintigraphy was performe

Response prediction is an important emerging concept in oncologic imaging, with tailored, individualized treatment regimens increasingly becoming the standard of care. This review aims to define tumour response and illustrate the ways in which imaging techniques can demonstrate tumour biological characteristics that provide information on the likely benefit to be received by treatment. Two imaging approaches are described: identification of therapeutic targets and depiction of the treatment-resistant phenotype. The former approach is exemplified by the use of radionuclide imaging to confirm ta
