Oscillations in ciliary beat frequency and intracellular calcium concentration in rabbit tracheal epithelial cells induced by ATP.

To investigate how Ca(2+) regulates airway ciliary activity, changes in ciliary beat frequency (CBF) and intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca(2+)](i)) of rabbit tracheal ciliated cells, in response to ATP, were simultaneously quantified with high-speed phase-contrast and fast fluorescence imaging. [ATP]<or= 1 microM induced an increase in [Ca(2+)](i) and CBF that declined to the initial basal levels and was followed by irregular brief increases in [Ca(2+)](i) and CBF. [ATP] > 1 but < 16 microM induced a similar increase in [Ca(2+)](i) and CBF but this was followed by oscillations in CBF an

Flash photolytic generation of ortho-quinone methide in aqueous solution and study of its chemistry in that medium.

Flash photolysis of o-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, o-hydroxybenzyl p-cyanophenyl ether, and (o-hydroxybenzyl)trimethylammonium iodide in aqueous perchloric acid and sodium hydroxide solutions, and in acetic acid and biphosphate ion buffers, produced o-quinone methide as a short-lived transient species that underwent hydration back to benzyl alcohol in hydrogen-ion catalyzed (k(H+) = 8.4 x 10(5) M(-1) s(-1)) and hydroxide-ion catalyzed (k(HO)- = 3.0 x 10(4) M(-1) s(-1)) reactions as well as an uncatalyzed (k(UC) = 2.6 x 10(2) s(-1)) process. The hydrogen-ion catalyzed reaction gave the solvent isotop

Designing pillar-layered metal-organic frameworks with photo-induced electron transfer interactions between ligands for enhanced photodynamic sterilization and photocatalytic degradation of dyes and antibiotics.

Pollution caused by antibiotics, bacteria, and organic dyes presents global public health challenges, posing serious risks to human health. Consequently, new, efficient, fast, and simple photocatalytic systems are urgently required. To this end, 2,7-di(pyridin-4-yl)benzo[lmn][3,8]phenanthroline-1,3,6,8(2H,7H)-tetraone (NDI)-an electron acceptor-is introduced as a connecting column into a porphyrin-based metal-organic layer (2DTcpp) with excellent photocatalytic activity; this modification yields a three-dimensional pillar-layered metal-organic framework (MOF, 3DNDITcpp) with superior photocata

Photocatalytic degradation of cyclophosphamide and ifosfamide: Effects of wastewater matrix, transformation products and in silico toxicity prediction.

Antineoplastic drugs have been identified in surface water and effluents from wastewater treatment and, once in the environment, may be harmful to aquatic organisms, as these compounds are possibly mutagenic, genotoxic, cytotoxic, carcinogenic and teratogenic. This work investigated the photodegradation of cyclophosphamide (CP) and ifosfamide (IF) using ruthenium doped titanate nanowires (Ru-TNW) in distilled water (DW) and in wastewater (WW) from secondary wastewater treatment, under UV-Vis radiation. The results indicated that Ru-TNW showed photocatalytic activity for the two cytotoxic drugs

The effective photocatalysis and antibacterial properties of AgBr/Ag2MoO4@ZnO composites under visible light irradiation.

A novel Z-scheme AgBr/Ag2MoO4@ZnO photocatalyst was fabricated via a hydrothermal process and in situ growth method. X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were used to determine the structure of the photocatalyst. The results showed that the composites were tightly connected by the (101) lattice plane of ZnO, the (222) plane of Ag2MoO4 and the (200) lattice plane of AgBr. Because of the strong redox activity and good separability of photoelectrons and holes induced by the Z-scheme structure, the photodegradation rate for ciprofloxacin (CIP)

Methoprene photolytic compounds disrupt zebrafish development, producing phenocopies of mutants in the sonic hedgehog signaling pathway.

Environmental chemicals have been proposed to impact endocrine or retinoid pathways, causing developmental abnormalities in humans and other vertebrates. Presented evidence shows that exposure of zebrafish embryos to sunlight-induced photolytic products of the pesticide methoprene results in developmental defects in the head, heart, pectoral fins, and somites, and in spinal motor and optic nerve axons. Exposed embryos are phenocopies of zebrafish you-type mutants and, as in the mutant sonic-you, show underexpression of the signaling protein sonic hedgehog. Reduced expression of sonic hedgehog

A novel photocatalytic degradation of mixed dye through chemically synthesized ZnO/Fe2O3 nanocomposite.

This study reported the synthesis and assessment of zinc oxide/iron oxide (ZnO/Fe2O3) nanocomposite as photocatalysts for the degradation of a mixture of methylene red and methylene blue dyes. X-ray diffraction analysis confirms that the crystallite of zinc oxide (ZnO) has a hexagonal wurtzite phase and iron oxide (Fe2O3) has a rhombohedral phase. Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectrum confirms the presence of Zn-O vibration stretching at 428, 480 and 543 cm-1 stretching confirming Fe-O bond formation. Scanning Electron Microscope images exhibited a diverse size and shape of the nanocomposites.

Selective and Efficient Photoinactivation of Intracellular Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA with Little Accumulation of Drug Resistance: Application of a Ru(II) Complex with Photolabile Ligands.

Novel antibacterial agents capable of efficiently sterilizing intracellular Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) but with low cytotoxicity and low resistance development are quite appealing. In this work, three Ru(II) complexes with photolabile ligands were explored to realize such a goal. Complex 3 (5 μM) can inhibit more than 90% growth of S. aureus/MRSA that has invaded in J774A.1 cells upon visible light irradiation, being much more efficient than vancomycin. In similar conditions, negligible dark- and phototoxicity were found toward the host cells. The bacteric

Highly photostable fluorescent labeling of proteins in live cells using exchangeable coiled coils heterodimerization.

Fluorescent proteins are commonly used to label target proteins in live cells. However, the conventional approach based on covalent fusion of targeted proteins with fluorescent protein probes is limited by the slow rate of fluorophore maturation and irretrievable loss of fluorescence due to photobleaching. Here, we report a genetically encoded protein labeling system utilizing transient interactions of small, 21-28 residues-long helical protein tags (K/E coils, KEC). In this system, a protein of interest, covalently tagged with a single coil, is visualized through binding to a cytoplasmic fluo

Enhanced degradation of antibiotics by photo-fenton reactive membrane filtration.

Micropollution such as pharmaceutical residuals potentially compromises water quality and jeopardizes human health. This study evaluated the photo-Fenton ceramic membrane filtration toward the removal of sulfadiazine (SDZ) as a common antibiotic chemical. The batch experiments verified that the photo-Fenton reactions with as Goethite (α-FeOOH) as the photo-Fenton catalyst achieved the degradation rates of 100% within 60 min with an initial SDZ concentration of 12 mg·L-1. Meanwhile, a mineralization rate of over 80% was obtained. In continuous filtration, a negligible removal rate (e.g., 4%) of

Linkages between stratospheric ozone, UV radiation and climate change and their implications for terrestrial ecosystems.

Exposure of plants and animals to ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B; 280-315 nm) is modified by stratospheric ozone dynamics and climate change. Even though stabilisation and projected recovery of stratospheric ozone is expected to curtail future increases in UV-B radiation at the Earth's surface, on-going changes in climate are increasingly exposing plants and animals to novel combinations of UV-B radiation and other climate change factors (e.g., ultraviolet-A and visible radiation, water availability, temperature and elevated carbon dioxide). Climate change is also shifting vegetation cover, geo

Toxicological study of the degradation products of antineoplastic agent etoposide in commercial formulation treated by heterogeneous photocatalysis using SrSnO3.

Etoposide is an antineoplastic agent used for treating lung cancer, testicular cancer, breast cancer, pediatric cancers, and lymphomas. It is a pollutant due to its mutagenic and carcinogenic potential. Disposal of waste from this drug is still insufficiently safe, and there is no appropriate waste treatment. Therefore, it is important to use advanced oxidative processes (AOPs) for the treatment and disposal of medicines like this. The use of strontium stannate (SrSnO3) as a catalyst in heterogeneous photocatalysis reactions has emerged as an alternative for the removal of organic pollutants.

STABILITY OF SOLUTIONS OF 2,3-DIPHENYLCYCLOPROPENONE IN VARIOUS SOLVENTS. A NOVEL FORMULA - DIPHENYLCYCLOPROPENONE IN ISOPROPANOL MAY BE USEFUL IN TOPICAL THERAPY OF PATIENTS WITH ALOPECIA AREATA.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical stability of diphenylcyclopropenone (DCP) in var- ious solvents. DCP is being used in topical therapy in patients with alopecia areata (AA). The solvents for DCP used so far were acetone, ethanol and propylene glycol. DCP is supposed to be an immune-modulating thera- peutic agent, however the studies on it's pharmacokinetics including chemical stability are lacking. In a pres- ent study, DCP was dissolved in acetone (A), ethanol (E), propylene glycol (PG) and isopropanol (I). Solutions at two concentrations: 0.1 and 3.0% were prepared in each

Fabrication of ZnFe2O4 films and its application in photoelectrocatalytic degradation of salicylic acid.

ZnFe2O4 thin films are successfully deposited onto bare and fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) coated quartz substrate using the spray pyrolysis method. The structure and morphology of ZnFe2O4 photoelectrodes were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The X-ray diffraction pattern confirms the polycrystalline nature of films with a spinel cubic crystal structure. The AFM micrographs shows the granular nature of the films. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss shows dispersion behavior as a function of frequency measured in the range from 20Hz to 1MHz. Photoele

On the mechanism of alleviation by phenobarbital of the malfunction of an epilepsy-linked GABA(A) receptor.

A mechanism for the alleviation of the malfunction of a mutated (gamma2(K289M)) epilepsy-linked gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurotransmitter receptor by phenobarbital is presented. Compared to the wild-type receptor, the GABA-induced current is considerably reduced in the mutated (alpha1beta2gamma2(K289M)) epilepsy-linked GABA(A) receptor [Baulac, S., Huberfeld, G., Gurfinkel-An, I., Mitropoulou, G., Beranger, A., Prud'homme, J. Preliminary study on the photoproduction of hydroxyl radicals in aqueous solution with Aldrich humic acid, algae and Fe(III) under high-pressure mercury lamp irradiation.

Under a high-pressure mercury lamp (HPML) and using an exposure time of 4 h, the photoproduction of hydroxyl radicals (*OH) could be induced in an aqueous solution containing humic acid (HA). Hydroxyl radicals were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography using benzene as a probe. The results showed that *OH photoproduction increased from 1.80 to 2.74 microM by increasing the HA concentration from 10 to 40 mg L(-1) at an exposure time of 4 h (pH 6.5). Hydroxyl radical photoproduction in aqueous solutions of HA containing algae was greater than that in the aqueous solutions of HA wi
