A reference method for correlation of anatomic and functional brain images: validation and clinical application.

We describe a reference device that provides accurate correlation between anatomic and functional brain images. The reference device, which generates fiduciary reference points on sequential scan planes, is positioned adjacent to the canthomeatal line of the subject and held in place by a glasses-like framework anchored to the external auditory meatus. The reference system was tested on 17 subjects undergoing 99mTc hexamethylpropylene amine oxime ([99mTc]HMPAO) brain single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and cranial computed tomography (CT) scans. The centers of the caudate nuclei

Changes in Brain Volumetric Measures Associated With Type 1 Diabetes Depict an Evolutionary Adaptation Process to Developmental Cognitive Demands.

BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes mellitus has been associated with a significant risk of brain volume reduction and cognitive disorders, mainly affecting executive functioning and working memory. Therefore, an early impact of type 1 diabetes can be expected on volumetric measures and anatomic relationships among brain structures underlying these mental processes, as reflecting a process probably driven by developmental cognitive demands. With this aim, we compared volumetric measures and brain anatomical associations in young adults with type 1 diabetes and healthy controls. METHODS: Forty-one cli

Effects of Mediterranean diet and stress-reduction interventions during pregnancy on fetal brain development detected using magnetic resonance imaging.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether lifestyle interventions based on Mediterranean diet or stress reduction during pregnancy are associated with differences in fetal brain development detectable by two-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a high-risk population for small-for-gestational-age neonates. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of the randomized controlled clinical trial, Improving Mothers for a better PrenAtal Care Trial BarCeloNa (IMPACT BCN), which enrolled 1221 singleton pregnancies at high-risk for a small-for-gestational-age neonate between February 2017 and March 2020. Altered resting-state functional connectivity in the sleep-wake circuit in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy: A Seed-based fMRI study.

OBJECTIVE: Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) is characterized by myoclonic seizures mostly occurring after awakening, and sleep deprivation is a common predisposing factor. This study aims to investigate the resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) of key regions in the sleep-wake circuit in patients with JME, focusing on the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), posterior hypothalamus, and the ascending reticular activating system (ARAS). METHODS: This study involved 33 patients with JME and 40 age and gender-matched healthy controls (HCs). All participants underwent sleep and cognitive learni

Model-Based Analyses for the Causal Relationship Between Post-stroke Impairments and Functional Brain Connectivity Regarding the Effects of Kinesthetic Illusion Therapy Combined With Conventional Exercise.

Aims: Therapy with kinesthetic illusion of segmental body part induced by visual stimulation (KINVIS) may allow the treatment of severe upper limb motor deficits in post-stroke patients. Herein, we investigated: (1) whether the effects of KINVIS therapy with therapeutic exercise (TherEx) on motor functions were induced through improved spasticity, (2) the relationship between resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) and motor functions before therapy, and (3) the baseline characteristics of rs-FC in patients with the possibility of improving their motor functions. Methods: Using data from

Thalamic connectivity in patients with essential tremor treated with MR imaging-guided focused ultrasound: in vivo fiber tracking by using diffusion-tensor MR imaging.

PURPOSE: To use diffusion-tensor (DT) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in patients with essential tremor who were treated with transcranial MR imaging-guided focused ultrasound lesion inducement to identify the structural connectivity of the ventralis intermedius nucleus of the thalamus and determine how DT imaging changes correlated with tremor changes after lesion inducement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: With institutional review board approval, and with prospective informed consent, 15 patients with medication-refractory essential tremor were enrolled in a HIPAA-compliant pilot study and were tre

Early detection of ventilation-induced brain injury using magnetic resonance spectroscopy and diffusion tensor imaging: an in vivo study in preterm lambs.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: High tidal volume (VT) ventilation during resuscitation of preterm lambs results in brain injury evident histologically within hours after birth. We aimed to investigate whether magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and/or diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can be used for early in vivo detection of ventilation-induced brain injury in preterm lambs. METHODS: Newborn lambs (0.85 gestation) were stabilized with a "protective ventilation" strategy (PROT, n = 7: prophylactic Curosurf, sustained inflation, VT 7 mL/kg, positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) 5 cmH2O) or an initial 1

Adult medulloblastoma: clinical profile and treatment results of 18 patients.

The objective of this article is to examine the clinicoradiological features and surgical outcomes of adult patients (>16 years) with medulloblastoma. An attempt was made to identify the predictors of poor outcome and assess patterns of relapse and to compare these with pediatric medulloblastoma. Retrospective case record analyses were performed on 18 adults (>16 years) and 79 children (<16 years) operated upon after January 1990, who had at least 5 years of follow-up. The following variables were assessed by bivariate analyses: age, location of the lesion, brainstem invasion, extent of excisi

Early second-trimester three-dimensional transvaginal neurosonography of fetal midbrain and hindbrain: normative data and technical aspects.

OBJECTIVES: To provide a detailed description of the sonographic appearance and development of various fetal structures of the midbrain and hindbrain (MBHB) during the early second trimester, and to evaluate the impact of the frequency of the transvaginal sonography (TVS) transducer on the early recognition of these structures. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of three-dimensional volumetric datasets of the MBHB from apparently normal fetuses at 14-19 gestational weeks, acquired by TVS in the midsagittal view through the posterior fontanelle. Using a multiplanar approach, we measure

A longitudinal observation of brain structure between AD and FTLD.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) are the leading causes of dementia. To better understand the disease development of cognitive function and anatomical structure in AD and FTLD, we analyzed the changes in brain volume by MRI and the psychological test results. Here, we report a dynamic observation of brain structure. METHODS: Thirteen patients diagnosed with probable AD by the 2011 NIA-AA criteria and eight FTLD patients diagnosed by the FTLD criteria underwent MRI at baseline. All subjects were rescanned after 5 months to 3 years of follow-up

A Possible Association Between Zika Virus Infection and CDK5RAP2 Mutation.

INTRODUCTION: Flaviviridae family belongs to the Spondweni serocomplex, which is mainly transmitted by vectors from the Aedes genus. Zika virus (ZIKV) is part of this genus. It was initially reported in Brazil in December 2014 as an unknown acute generalized exanthematous disease and was subsequently identified as ZIKV infection. ZIKV became widespread all over Brazil and was linked with potential cases of microcephaly. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 28-year-old Colombian woman, who came to the Obstetric Department with an assumed conglomerate of fetal abnormalities detected via ultrasono

Cholesterol and development: the RSH ("Smith-Lemli-Opitz") syndrome and related conditions.

The half-century of lipophobia in the United States may be abating with some return of sanity on the discussion of health and dietary fat [Taubes, 2001]. The youngest victims of this collective, decades long madness are those infants deprived for one reason or another of breast milk. They are unable to speak for themselves at a time of greatest need for cholesterol during growth, the most critical period of myelination of central and peripheral nervous system, formation of bone and bile, and of every steroid hormone. Some of the commercial formulas they are fed contain only 1 or 2 mg of choles

Developmental characteristics of trisomy 19 mice.

Trisomy 19 (Ts19), the only murine trisomy compatible with survival beyond birth, allows systematic studies on the effect of an additional chromosome upon postnatal development. In this review, developmental consequences of murine Ts19 are presented. In Ts19 mice, viability is limited to a few weeks postpartum. Body weight is markedly reduced. The occurrence of malformations of the cardiovascular, skeletal and central nervous systems depends on the parental genetic background. In all organ systems examined, development is delayed by 1-2 days. Ts19 hematopoietic cells exhibit the same survival

POLR3A rare variants in a patient with intellectual disability, ataxic gait and cortical malformations: a case-report.

BACKGROUND: Recessive mutations in POLR3A exhibit considerable phenotypic diversity, spanning from severe childhood-onset hypomyelinating leukodystrophic syndrome to less severe gait disorders, which may present later in life and may be accompanied by additional non-neurological symptoms. In this study, we report a new case of rare POLR3A variants in a 6-year-old female patient sharing common genetic and neuropsychological profiles of POLR3-related disorders, although without revealing the classic MRI phenotype and severe clinical signs of POLR3-related leukodystrophy, such as diffuse hypomyel

Developing a novel dual-injection FDG-PET imaging methodology to study the functional neuroanatomy of gait.

Gait is an excellent indicator of physical, emotional, and mental health. Previous studies have shown that gait impairments in ageing are common, but the neural basis of these impairments are unclear. Existing methodologies are suboptimal and novel paradigms capable of capturing neural activation related to real walking are needed. In this study, we used a hybrid PET/MR system and measured glucose metabolism related to both walking and standing with a dual-injection paradigm in a single study session. For this study, 15 healthy older adults (10 females, age range: 60.5-70.7 years) with normal

Clinical features and genetic analysis of Dandy-Walker syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is a rare congenital malformation of the central nervous system (CNS), characterized by underdevelopment or dysplasia of the cerebellar vermis, expansion of the fourth ventricle and posterior fossa cistern. The incidence is aboutapproximately 1/25000-1/35000. At present, the etiology and pathogenesis of DWS are not completely clear. It is mostly considered to be a multifactorial genetic disease that is related to both genetic factors and environmental factors. There is no large sample size analysis of the chromosomal profile of DWS up to now. This study

Morphology and morphometry of the human early foetal brain: A three-dimensional analysis.

Morphometric analyses in the early foetal phase (9-13 postconceptional week) are critical for evaluating normal brain growth. In this study, we assessed sequential morphological and morphometric changes in the foetal brain during this period using high-resolution T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans from 21 samples preserved at Kyoto University. MRI sectional views (coronal, mid-sagittal, and horizontal sections) and 3D reconstructions of the whole brain revealed sequential changes in its external morphology and internal structures. The cerebrum's gross external view, lateral ven

Neuroimaging of the Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.

AIM: Presented is the neuroradiological signature of acute Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE), derived from different types of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences. WE results from thiamine depletion, and its most typical antecedent is chronic alcohol dependence. Brain regions observed with in vivo MRI affected in acute WE include the mammillary bodies, periaqueductal and periventricular gray matter, collicular bodies and thalamus. These affected areas are usually edematous and are best visualized and quantified with MRI sequences that highlight such tissue. Following the acute WE phase and

A wrist-walker exhibiting no "Uner Tan Syndrome": a theory for possible mechanisms of human devolution toward the atavistic walking patterns.

After discovering two families with handicapped children exhibiting the "Uner Tan syndrome," the author discovered a man exhibiting only wrist-walking with no primitive mental abilities including language. According to his mother, he had an infectious disease with high fever as a three months old baby; as a result, the left leg had been paralyzed after a penicilline injection. This paralysis most probably resulted from a viral disease, possibly poliomyelitis. He is now (2006) 36 years old; the left leg is flaccid and atrophic, with no tendon reflexes; however, sensation is normal. The boy neve

Fatal hemangioblastoma: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Hemangioblastoma (HB) is a benign tumor of the central nervous system (CNS), typically associated with a favorable prognosis following aggressive surgical resection. Spontaneous rupture and bleeding of these tumors are exceptionally rare, with only a small number of fatal cases reported. The rarity of such cases has impeded reliable epidemiological studies, underscoring the need to investigate the risk factors associated with HB-related mortality. CASE REPORT: A patient presented with a 12-hour history of headache and rapidly became comatose approximately 30 minutes after admissio
