Tumour growth, phagocytic activity and antibody response in Corynebacterium parvum-treated mice.

Serum from both normal and T cell-deprived female adult CBA mice shows a background titre of antibody to Corynebacterium parvum of about 2–4 log2 units by a latex agglutination test. Intraperitoneal injection of C. parvum causes a marked rise in titre which reaches its peak after about a month, and a second injection at that time evokes a further response. Treatment with mercaptoethanol reduces the background titre, and also the titre 1–3 weeks after immunization by 1–2 log units. Subcutaneous injection of C. parvum on the other hand evokes little or no antibody response. Both the antitumour e

Analysis of 16S rRNA Gene Sequence of Nasopharyngeal Exudate Reveals Changes in Key Microbial Communities Associated with Aging.

Functional or compositional perturbations of the microbiome can occur at different sites, of the body and this dysbiosis has been linked to various diseases. Changes in the nasopharyngeal microbiome are associated to patient's susceptibility to multiple viral infections, supporting the idea that the nasopharynx may be playing an important role in health and disease. Most studies on the nasopharyngeal microbiome have focused on a specific period in the lifespan, such as infancy or the old age, or have other limitations such as low sample size. Therefore, detailed studies analyzing the age- and

The immunological and structural epidermal barrier dysfunction and skin microbiome in atopic dermatitis-an update.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common, chronic and relapsing inflammatory skin disease with various clinical presentations and combinations of symptoms. The pathophysiology of AD is complex and multifactorial. There are several factors involved in the etiopathogenesis of AD including structural and immunological epidermal barrier defect, imbalance of the skin microbiome, genetic background and environmental factors. Alterations in structural proteins, lipids, proteases, and their inhibitors, lead to the impairment of the stratum corneum which is associated with the increased skin penetration and

Prevalence of Foodborne Pathogens in Pacific Northwest Beef Feedlot Cattle Fed Two Different Direct-Fed Microbials.

In recent years, there has been an increased interest in beef cattle shedding of foodborne pathogens due to the potential to contaminate surrounding food crops; however, the number of studies published on this topic has declined as the majority of research has emphasized on postharvest mitigation efforts. A field study was conducted to determine the prevalence of pathogens and indicator bacteria in beef cattle fed two different direct-fed microbials (DFMs). Fecal samples from a total of 3,708 crossbred yearling cattle randomly assigned to 16 pens and two treatment groups at a commercial cattle

Comparative analysis of the gut microbiota of sand fly vectors of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL) in Iran; host-environment interplay shapes diversity.

The development of Leishmania parasites within sand fly vectors occurs entirely in the insect gut lumen, in the presence of symbiotic and commensal bacteria. The impacts of host species and environment on the gut microbiome are currently poorly understood. We employed MiSeq sequencing of the V3-16S rRNA gene amplicons to characterize and compare the gut microbiota of field-collected populations of Phlebotomus kandelakii, P. perfiliewi, P. alexandri, and P. major, the primary or secondary vectors of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL) in three distinct regions of Iran where ZVL is endemic. Prevalence of Occult Infections in Posterior Instrumented Spinal Fusion.

STUDY DESIGN: This is a prospective observational study. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine the rate of occult infection after instrumented spine surgery in presumed aseptic patients. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The reported incidence rate of delayed/occult infection determined by positive culture swabs after instrumented spine surgery in prospective studies is 0.2%-6.9%. However, this rate may be higher as delayed infections are challenging to diagnose. Fever can be absent and inflammatory markers are often normal. If indolent organisms exist in low concentrations surrounding

1H-NMR Metabolomics and LC-MS Analysis to Determine Seasonal Variation in a Cosmeceutical Plant Leucosidea sericea.

Leucosidea sericea is an evergreen shrub belonging to the Rosaceae family with previous studies that indicated that L. sericea extracts exhibited strong anti-bacterial properties against Propionibacterium acnes, showing potential as a cosmeceutical. The plant is traditionally used as a vermifuge, as an astringent and to treat conjunctivitis. Commercial production is, however, not possible as no information is available on cultivation and the effect of external environmental factors such as seasonal variation on the medicinal properties of the plant. Seasonal variation was investigated and it w

Antibiotic resistant Cutibacterium acnes among acne patients in Jordan: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotics have been used for decades against Cutibacterium acnes (previously known as Propionibacterium acnes; C. acnes). Alarmingly, antibiotic resistance to this bacterium has become a worldwide problem in recent years. No studies are available on the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of C. acnes among Jordanian acne patients and how that is influenced by antibiotic use. This study aims to assess antibiotic resistance patterns of C. acnes clinical isolates and neighboring Gram-positive normal flora of the skin obtained from acne patients attending dermatology clinics in Amman

Breast Implant Illness: A Biofilm Hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: "Breast implant illness" (BII) is a poorly defined cluster of nonspecific symptoms, attributed by patients as being caused by their breast implants. These symptoms can include joint pain, skin and hair changes, concentration, and fatigue. Many patients complaining of BII symptoms are dismissed as psychosomatic. There are currently over 10,000 peer-reviewed articles on breast implants, but at the time of commencing this study, only 2 articles discussed this entity. At the same time, mainstream media and social media are exploding with nonscientific discussion about BII. METHODS: We

Perinatal probiotic intervention prevented allergic disease in a Caesarean-delivered subgroup at 13-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: The long-term effects of probiotic intervention for primary prevention of allergic diseases are not well known. We previously reported less eczema until 10 years in our probiotic intervention trial. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of early probiotic intervention on the prevalence of allergic diseases up to 13 years of age. METHODS: Pregnant women (n = 1223) carrying a child at a high risk of allergy (at least one parent with allergic disease) were randomized to receive a mixture of probiotics (Lactobacillus rhamnosusGG and LC705, Bifidobacterium breve Bb99 and Propionibacter

Active Trachoma Cases in the Solomon Islands Have Varied Polymicrobial Community Structures but Do Not Associate with Individual Non-Chlamydial Pathogens of the Eye.

BACKGROUND: Several non-chlamydial microbial pathogens are associated with clinical signs of active trachoma in trachoma-endemic communities with a low prevalence of ocular Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) infection. In the Solomon Islands, the prevalence of Ct among children is low despite the prevalence of active trachoma being moderate. Therefore, we set out to investigate whether active trachoma was associated with a common non-chlamydial infection or with a dominant polymicrobial community dysbiosis in the Solomon Islands. METHODS: We studied DNA from conjunctival swabs collected from 257 Solo

Pregnant women carrying microcephaly foetuses and Zika virus contain potentially pathogenic microbes and parasites in their amniotic fluid.

BACKGROUND: Microcephaly has become a major public health problem in Brazil. The total number of newborns with microcephaly was reported to be >4000 in June 2016. Studies suggest that Zika Virus is a major cause of new microcephaly cases in Brazil. Inside the uterus, the foetus is surrounded by the Amniotic Fluid, a proximal fluid that contains foetal and maternal cells as well as microorganisms and where Zika Virus was already found. CASE PRESENTATION: A previous study reported the presence of the Zika Virus in the amniotic fluid (collected in the 28th gestational week) of two pregnant women

Anaerobic prosthetic joint infection.

In an effort to improve mobility and alleviate pain from degenerative and connective tissue joint disease, an increasing number of individuals are undergoing prosthetic joint replacement in the United States. Joint replacement is a highly effective intervention, resulting in improved quality of life and increased independence [1]. By 2030, it is predicted that approximately 4 million total hip and knee arthroplasties will be performed yearly in the United States [2]. One of the major complications associated with this procedure is prosthetic joint infection (PJI), occurring at a rate of 1-2% [

Development of antimicrobial resistance in the normal anaerobic microbiota during one year after administration of clindamycin or ciprofloxacin.

Thirty healthy subjects (15 males and 15 females) were randomly assigned in three groups and clindamycin (150 mg qid) or ciprofloxacin (500 mg bid) or placebo was given for a 10-day period. Skin, nasal, saliva, faeces samples were collected at day - 1, day 11, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months and 12 months post administration for microbiological analysis. Ciprofloxacin or clindamycin had no impact on the anaerobic skin microbiota and the proportions of antibiotic resistant anaerobic bacteria were similar as in the placebo group. Ciprofloxacin had impact on the Propionibacterium acnes in the nasal m

Bacterial epidemiology of osteoarticular infections in a referent center: 10-year study.

INTRODUCTION: Management of osteoarticular infections combines surgical treatment with antibiotic therapy. For some teams the immediate postoperative regimen requires at least partly wide-spectrum probabilistic treatment while waiting for the microbiological results. This protocol exposes the patient to the selection of resistant bacteria and the hospital unit to a modification of its bacterial ecology. The objective of this study was to retrospectively describe the microbial epidemiology of the Traumatology and Orthopaedics Department of the Lille University Hospital over 10 years (2002-2011)

Coagulase-negative staphylococci are the most common bacteria found in cultures from the deep portions of hidradenitis suppurativa lesions, as obtained by carbon dioxide laser surgery.

The significance of bacterial findings in hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is controversial. Interpretation of the results of bacteriological examinations from the surface of HS lesions is obscured by the possible contamination of resident skin bacteria. Bacteriological analysis of aspirates from deeper parts of HS is liable to show low sensitivity. We used a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser method to evaporate the diseased tissue level by level from the surface downwards, allowing concurrent sampling of bacteriological cultures from each level and thereby minimizing contamination with bacteria from th

Dissolvable silk microneedles delivering minocycline-loaded ZIF-8 nanoparticles for targeted modulation of sebocyte metabolism and improved acne therapy.

BACKGROUND: Acne Vulgaris (AV) lesions exhibit an acidic, sebum-rich, and inflammation-prone microenvironment in which conventional minocycline therapy is constrained by the stratum-corneum barrier and systemic exposure. Here, we present the fabrication and application of dissolvable silk fibroin microneedles encapsulating minocycline-loaded zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (Mino@ZIF-8/SF MNs) to achieve sebaceous gland-targeted, pH-responsive delivery and multimodal therapy. RESULTS: The Mino@ZIF-8/SF MNs display uniform conical morphology, excellent mechanical robustness (peak failure force

The Inflammatory Basis of Acne Pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Acne is a common inflammatory and genetically influenced skin disease. Previous genome-wide association studies and epigenome-wide association studies have demonstrated that genetic factors constitute an important basis for acne susceptibility, while recurrent and persistent local inflammatory responses contribute to its chronic and relapsing nature. SUMMARY: Infection with Cutibacterium acnes, activation of Toll-like receptors and the NLRP3 inflammasome, and dysregulation of the IL-6/STAT3 and Notch signaling pathways induce the release of inflammatory mediators and immune activa

A rocking biologic prosthetic valve: Cutibacterium acnes prosthetic valve endocarditis.

Cutibacterium acnes is a low-virulence pathogen that can cause prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE), presenting significant diagnostic challenges due to its slow growth and indolent clinical course. We report a case of a 57-year-old male with a history of tissue aortic valve replacement, who presented with 6 months of intermittent fever and a nonproductive cough. Initial tests showed elevated inflammatory markers and moderate aortic regurgitation, but no vegetations were identified on transthoracic or transoesophageal echocardiography. After 13 months of symptoms, a PET scan showed significant
