PURPOSE: The treatment of advanced stages of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) remains challenging. In order to improve decision making concerning the therapy, we examined the change of patients' quality of life (QoL) after surgical treatment of MRONJ stage III.
METHOD: The primary outcome variable was patients' QoL. It was preoperative (T0), 6 weeks postoperative (T1) and 6 months postoperative (T2) assessed by the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer QoL-H&N35 (EORTC QoL-H&N35) and the Oral Health Impact Factor-G14 (OHIP-G14) questionnaire in a prospe

BACKGROUND: Bisphosphonates and receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand inhibitors are currently the most widely used antiresorptive therapies in bone metabolism diseases treatment. Unfortunately they can evoke medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws. The present case series study proposes to evaluate clinical features, evolution and the surgical therapeutic approaches in three patients affected by medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw and to review the state of art regarding the management of this complication in light of the most recent literature.
METHODS: Three case

PURPOSE: This observational case registry study was designed to describe the natural history of cancer patients with medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) and evaluate the ONJ resolution rate.
METHODS: Adults with a diagnosis of cancer and with a new diagnosis of ONJ were enrolled and evaluated by a dental specialist at baseline and every 3 months for 2 years and then every 6 months for 3 years until death, consent withdrawal, or loss to follow-up. The primary endpoint was the rate and time course of ONJ resolution. Secondary endpoints included frequency of incident ONJ risk facto

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present work was to analyze a 10-year retrospective series of surgically treated medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) cases, reporting the clinical outcome and success rate for each adopted procedure in order to draw a treatment algorithm that is able to standardize clinical decision making and maximize the success of oral surgical treatment of MRONJ.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with stage 3 medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) suffer from severe complications. Chemotherapeutic agents and targeted drugs are considered to be associated with the development of MRONJ. However, little is known regarding the association of those agents with stage 3 MRONJ. The purpose of this study is to analyze the comprehensive medication history of patients with advanced-stage MRONJ (stage 2 and stage 3) and evaluate the possible risk factors for stage 3 MRONJ. Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is the most serious side effect in patients receiving bisphosphonates (BPs) for neoplastic disease and osteoporosis. The aim of this study is to propose a new dimensional stage classification, guiding the surgical treatment of BRONJ patients, and to evaluate the success rate of this new management. From 2004 to 2013, 203 neoplastic and osteoporotic patients with 266 BRONJ lesions were referred to the Odontostomatology Unit of the University of Bari. All patients underwent surgery after suspension of BPs therapy and antibiotic treatment. T

INTRODUCTION: Increased incidence of localized osteonecrosis in the jaw bones caused by bisphosphanate use and reduced quality of life of the patients led researchers to diagnose the disease in the early period and to investigate the effective treatment modality.
OBJECTIVE: Treatment of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw patients is based on individual protocols from clinical experience, as there are no definitive treatment guidelines. In view of the lack of consensus on the effectiveness of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw treatments in the literature, the aim of this stu

Osteonecrosis of the jaw induced by administration of bisphosphonates (BPs), BP-related osteonecrosis (BRONJ), typically develops after tooth extraction and is medically challenging. As BPs inhibit oral mucosal cell growth, we hypothesized that suppression of the wound healing-inhibiting effects could prevent BRONJ onset after tooth extraction. Since basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) promotes wound healing, but has a short half-life, we examined whether the initiation of BRONJ could be prevented by applying a bFGF-containing gelatin hydrogel over the extraction sockets of BRONJ model rats.

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a major problem that can occur in people taking certain medications such bisphosphonates and denosumab. It can be used to treat osteoporosis or cancer. Bisphosphonate exposure, dental diseases and procedures, age, sex, anatomical factors, medical issues, and hereditary factors are all variables that enhance the risk of MRONJ. Even though MRONJ and antiresorptive medications have a close association, the pathophysiology of MRONJ is unknown. Careful dental preparation and oral hygiene instructions significantly minimize the risk of osteonecr

Medication-induced jaw osteonecrosis (MRONJ) is a rare and serious disease with a negative impact on patients' quality of life, whose exact cause remains unclear and which may have a multifactorial origin. Although there are different therapeutic protocols, there is still no consensus. This case series evaluated three patients diagnosed with staged 2 MRONJ treated at the University of Murcia dental clinic according to the protocols described by the Spanish Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) in cancer patients presents a considerable challenge in management. Current management is primarily based on interventions in a limited number of cases assessing a single approach. Medical management typically is reported to include antimicrobial therapy with or without surgery. Advances in the understanding of pathogenesis have led to the investigation of additional medical interventions for early-stage necrosis. We present 3 patients with advanced-stage MRONJ of the maxilla using combined medical modalities including antimicrobial therapy,

PURPOSE: To assess and classify the strategies employed in various dental specialities for the prevention and management of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was conducted, acquiring studies sourced from Google Scholar and PubMed. The emphasis was on studies published in recent years, focusing on successful MRONJ prevention techniques across various dental specialties.
RESULTS: Four types of prevention were identified. Primary prevention strategies include optimizing oral hygiene, managing dental caries, and extracti

This review systematically examines the oral complications associated with conventional and novel anti-cancer therapies. It highlights that while molecularly targeted agents including monoclonal antibodies targeting the vascular endothelial growth factor and its receptor, the epidermal growth factor receptor, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, and immune checkpoint inhibitors tend to exhibit a lower overall toxicity profile compared to traditional cytotoxic chemotherapeutics, they are nonetheless linked to significant oral adverse events. These complications encompass inflammatory mucosal reactions k

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a debilitating adverse effect of bisphosphates, antiresorptive therapy or antiangiogenic agents that can potentially increase oxidative stress, leading to progressive osteonecrosis of the jaws. Despite the large number of published systematic reviews, there is a lack of potential MRONJ treatment protocols utilising photobiomodulation (PBM) as a single or adjunct therapy for preventive or therapeutic oncology or non-oncology cohort. Hence, this systematic review aimed to evaluate PBM laser efficacy and its dosimetry as a monotherapy or comb
