Physiological biodistribution of 18F-fluciclovine PET in the head: as a baseline for interpretation in patients with suspected glioma.

INTRODUCTION: Anti-1-amino-3-[18F] fluorocyclobutane-1-carboxylic acid (18F-fluciclovine; anti-3-[18F] FACBC) is an amino acid positron emission tomography (PET) tracer used for the evaluation of brain tumors in cases of suspected or diagnosed glioma. While its uptake characteristics in brain tumors have been reported, systematic data on background uptake in normal-appearing head tissues including extracranial structures remain limited. The purpose of this study was to characterize the background uptake of 18F-fluciclovine in intracranial and extracranial head tissues in patients with suspecte

Functional brain activity in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment: an rs-fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is an early stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Regional homogeneity (ReHo) and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) are employed to explore spontaneous brain function in patients with aMCI. This study applied ALFF and ReHo indicators to analyze the neural mechanism of aMCI by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). METHODS: Twenty-six patients with aMCI were included and assigned to the aMCI group. The other 26 healthy subjects were included as a healthy control (HC) group. Rs-fMRI was performed for all part

Maternal ART throughout gestation prevents caudate volume reductions in neonates who are HIV exposed but uninfected.

INTRODUCTION: Successful programmes for prevention of vertical HIV transmission have reduced the risk of infant HIV infection in South Africa from 8% in 2008 to below 1% in 2018/2019, resulting in an increasing population of children exposed to HIV perinatally but who are uninfected (HEU). However, the long-term effects of HIV and antiretroviral treatment (ART) exposure on the developing brain are not well understood. Whereas children who are HEU perform better than their HIV-infected counterparts, they demonstrate greater neurodevelopmental delay than children who are HIV unexposed and uninfe

A Novel Homozygous Mutation in SPTBN2 Leads to Spinocerebellar Ataxia in a Consanguineous Family: Report of a New Infantile-Onset Case and Brief Review of the Literature.

The objective of this study was the identification of likely genes and mutations associated with an autosomal recessive (AR) rare spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) phenotype in two patients with infantile onset, from a consanguineous family. Using genome-wide SNP screening, autozygosity mapping, targeted Sanger sequencing and nextgen sequencing, family segregation analysis, and comprehensive neuropanel, we discovered a novel mutation in SPTBN2. Next, we utilized multiple sequence alignment of amino acids from various species as well as crystal structures provided by protein data bank (PDB# 1WYQ and

Permanent neuronal deficits in rats exposed to alcohol during the brain growth spurt.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether developmental alcohol exposure could induce permanent neuronal deficits, whether the peak blood alcohol concentration (BAC) influences the severity of the effects, and whether the effects are gender related. Rat pups were reared artificially over postnatal days (PD) 4 through 11 (a period of rapid brain growth, comparable to part of the human third trimester). Alcohol treatments were administered on PD 4 through 9. Patterns of alcohol exposure that produce different peak BACs have been shown to affect differentially the amount of brain weight

Air pollution and fetal brain morphological development: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: There is a scarcity of evidence of the influence of exposure to air pollution during pregnancy on the human fetal brain characterised prenatally. We aimed to evaluate the association of exposure to air pollution with fetal brain morphology. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, we used data from the Barcelona Life Study Cohort, Spain, which recruited 1080 pregnant women at 8-14 weeks of gestation between Oct 16, 2018, and April 14, 2021, from three major university hospitals in Barcelona. Eligible participants were aged 18-45 years, had a singleton pregnancy, and had a fetus

Novel LRPPRC compound heterozygous mutation in a child with early-onset Leigh syndrome French-Canadian type: case report of an Italian patient.

BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial diseases, also known as oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) disorders, with a prevalence rate of 1:5000, are the most frequent inherited metabolic diseases. Leigh Syndrome French Canadian type (LSFC), is caused by mutations in the nuclear gene (2p16) leucine-rich pentatricopeptide repeat-containing (LRPPRC). It is an autosomal recessive neurogenetic OXPHOS disorder, phenotypically distinct from other types of Leigh syndrome, with a carrier frequency up to 1:23 and an incidence of 1:2063 in the Saguenay-Lac-St Jean region of Quebec. Recently, LSFC has also been reported

Association between fetal brain diffusion-weighted imaging and postnatal neurodevelopmental outcome after prenatal myelomeningocele repair.

OBJECTIVE: Myelomeningocele (MMC) is associated with significant alterations of the brain microstructure, which can impair long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. By measuring the random displacement of water molecules within the brain, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) can provide objective metrics, such as apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values, which allow the fetal brain microstructure to be characterized. The aim of this study was to compare prenatal brain ADC values, obtained using MRI-DWI, between infants with prenatally repaired MMC who had nor

[Does proprioception of the extrinsic eye muscles participate in equilibrium, vision and oculomotor action?].

Extrinsic eye muscles respond to both proprioceptive and visual impulses. Histology of ocular proprioceptive receptors shows them to be qualitatively and original, neuromuscular bundles are found in primates, and so called "palisade sensory nerve endings" in felines. Golgi's osteotendinous receptors are apparently absent. The number of muscle receptors is high and their proportion in relation to muscle weight even more so. The afferent pathway for this sensory system initially accompanies the motor fibers of oculomotor III, IV, ans VI nerves. Some fibers continue with these nerves to the brain

Vertical transmission of a large calvarial ossification defect due to heterozygous variants of ALX4 and TWIST1.

ALX4 is a homeobox gene expressed in the mesenchyme of developing bone and is known to play an important role in the regulation of osteogenesis. Enlarged parietal foramina (EPF) is a phenotype of delayed intramembranous ossification of calvarial bones due to variants of ALX4. The contrasting phenotype of premature ossification of sutures is observed with heterozygous loss-of-function variants of TWIST1, which is an important regulator of osteoblast differentiation. Here, we describe an individual with a large cranium defect, with dominant transmission from the mother, both carrying disease cau

Disability profiles in progressive multiple sclerosis reflect pathology distribution, independent of clinical phenotype.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a clinically heterogeneous disease affecting both neurological and cognitive functions. In this study, we defined clinical profiles based on combined cognitive and motor assessments in progressive MS patients, examined their overlap with classical progressive phenotypes and linked each profile to MRI measures of network disconnection and grey matter atrophy. We analyzed baseline data from 580 participants [277 primary progressive (PP)MS, 303 secondary progressive (SP)MS] in the phase 3b CONSONANCE (NCT03523858) study. Clinical assessments included Expanded Disability

From convergence insufficiency to functional reorganization: A longitudinal randomized controlled trial of treatment-induced connectivity plasticity.

INTRODUCTION: Convergence Insufficiency (CI) is the most prevalent oculomotor dysfunction of binocular vision that negatively impacts quality of life when performing visual near tasks. Decreased resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) is reported in the CI participants compared to binocularly normal control participants. Studies report that therapeutic interventions such as office-based vergence and accommodative therapy (OBVAT) can improve CI participants' clinical signs, visual symptoms, and task-related functional activity. However, longitudinal studies investigating the RSFC changes a

Exploring Neural Correlates of Different Dimensions in Drug Craving Self-Reports among Heroin Dependents.

INTRODUCTION: Drug craving could be described as a motivational state which drives drug dependents towards drug seeking and use. Different types of self-reports such as craving feeling, desire and intention, wanting and need, imagery of use, and negative affect have been attributed to this motivational state. By using subjective self-reports for different correlates of drug craving along with functional neuroimaging with cue exposure paradigm, we investigated the brain regions that could correspond to different dimensions of subjective reports for heroin craving. METHODS: A total of 25 crysta

Clinical characteristics and genetic analysis of different Dandy-Walker malformation.

BACKGROUND: Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) is a rare congenital malformation of the central nervous system (CNS). It is characterized by variable hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis, cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle, with or without an enlarged cisterna magna. Given that large-sample genetic analysis of DWM has not been conducted to date, this study aims to provide more comprehensive genetic counseling for prenatal diagnosis by summarizing the clinical features and genetic findings of DWM. METHODS: Between January 2010 and May 2025, among 22,048 pregnant women, there were 487 cases

MRI Findings in Third-Trimester Opioid-Exposed Fetuses, With Focus on Brain Measurements: A Prospective Multicenter Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND. The opioid epidemic has profoundly affected infants born in the United States, as in utero opioid exposure increases the risk of cognitive and behavioral problems in childhood. Scarce literature has evaluated prenatal brain development in fetuses with opioid exposure in utero (hereafter opioid-exposed fetuses). OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study is to compare opioid-exposed fetuses and fetuses without opioid exposure (hereafter unexposed fetuses) in terms of 2D biometric measurements of the brain and additional pregnancy-related assessments on fetal MRI. METHODS. This prospective
