BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in dairy production systems poses a major public health threat, particularly under the One Health framework. Raw milk can act as a reservoir for multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens, especially in regions like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Pakistan, where unregulated antibiotic use and insufficient surveillance have promoted high-risk resistance hotspots. This study analyzed 172 bacterial isolates from raw milk, focusing on key pathogens, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, to assess their prevalence, resistance profiles, and epidemiological distrib

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus species (MRSS) are a global public health threat, causing substantial morbidity, mortality, and economic burden. Understanding the characteristics of MRSS from various niches can support the control of these bacterial species. Herein, we examined the prevalence, biofilm formation, hemolytic activity, and selected aminoglycoside resistance genes in MRSS isolates from potable water and clinical samples in Dutsin-Ma, northwestern Nigeria.
METHODS: A total of 200 samples, including 100 water and 100 clinical samples, were collected and analyzed. St

BACKGROUND: The dissemination of multi-drug-resistant bacteria, particularly Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), necessitates exploring new alternatives for their control. Bacteriophages are promising antibiotic alternatives with unique features. Here, we have performed a comprehensive characterization of a newly isolated bacteriophage (PSK) and compared its therapeutic potential with vancomycin in vivo.
METHODS: Sewage samples were processed and enriched with the MRSA S. aureus SK1 strain in a search for isolation of a lytic bacteriophage. The isolated bacteriophage was asses

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global health, exacerbated by the protective mechanisms of biofilms formed by drug-resistant bacteria. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) produced by bacteria in biofilms serve as a formidable shield, impeding the efficacy of antimicrobial agents. Here, we investigated the potential of vitamin C (sodium ascorbate) to disrupt biofilm formation in drug-resistant bacteria isolated from diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) patients and studied the antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity of vitamin C on these bacteria.
RESULTS: Out

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV7/10/13) have reduced vaccine-serotype disease and resistance globally, including indirect effects in unvaccinated populations. Nigeria introduced PCV10 in 2016, but its impact on serotype distribution and resistance in Delta State remains poorly defined. AIM: To determine the prevalence of Streptococcus pneumoniae, the circulating serotypes, and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns among children and adults ~ 3 years post PCV10 introduction in Delta State, Nigeria. METHODS: We processed 622 clinical specimens (July 2019–November 2020) fro

OBJECTIVES: Streptococcus agalactiae, or group B Streptococcus (GBS), is a significant pathogen associated with severe infections in neonates, particularly sepsis and meningitis. The increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance among GBS strains is a growing public health concern, necessitating a comprehensive meta-analysis to evaluate the prevalence of this resistance globally.
METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive systematic search across four major scientific databases: Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE, targeting articles published until December 13, 2023. This meta-analysis fo

INTRODUCTION: Tropical myositis - also known as pyomyositis - is a subacute, primary infection of skeletal muscle. Long considered a diagnosis exclusive to tropical climates, recently it has been reported increasingly in historically nontropical climates. We present a case of tropical myositis in Madison, Wisconsin, occurring in a febrile type 1 diabetic patient without travel or known exposure.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old male with a history of von Willebrand disease, type 1 diabetes, and financial insecurity resulting in insulin rationing presented with 2 weeks of generalized weakness.

BACKGROUND: Continuous monitoring of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Uganda involves testing bacterial isolates from clinical samples at national and regional hospitals. Although the National Microbiology Reference Laboratory (NMRL) analyzes these isolates for official AMR surveillance data, there's limited integration into public health planning. To enhance the utilization of NMRL data to better inform drug selection and public health strategies in combating antibiotic resistance, we evaluated the trends and spatial distribution of AMR to common antibiotics used in Uganda.
METHODS: We anal

The World Health Organization released a statement warning of increased risk for the incidence of multidrug resistant microorganisms and the absence of new drugs to control such infections soon. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the prescription of antimicrobial agents has increased and may have accelerated the emergence of multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria. This study aimed to evaluate maternal and pediatric infections within a hospital from January 2019 to December 2021. An observational retrospective cohort study was performed at a quaternary referral hospital in a metropolitan

Proteus penneri (P. penneri) is a bacillus-shaped, gram-negative, facultative anaerobe bacterium that is primarily an invasive pathogen and the etiological agent of several hospital-associated infections. P. penneri strains are naturally resistant to macrolides, amoxicillin, oxacillin, penicillin G, and cephalosporins; in addition, no vaccines are available against these strains. This warrants efforts to propose a theoretical based multi-epitope vaccine construct to prevent pathogen infections. In this research, reverse vaccinology bioinformatics and immunoinformatics approaches were adopted f

Healthcare-associated infections caused by Staphylococcus, particularly Staphylococcus aureus, represent a high risk for human and animal health. Staphylococcus can be easily transmitted through direct contact with individual carriers or fomites, such as medical and non-medical equipment. The risk increases if S. aureus strains carry antibiotic resistance genes and show a phenotypic multidrug resistance behavior. The aim of the study was to identify and characterize methicillin resistant coagulase-positive staphylococci (MRSA) and coagulase-negative staphylococci (MRCoNS) in equine patients an
