The prevalence of early childhood caries in 12- to 36-month-old children in Recife, Brazil.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of early childhood caries among preschool children aged between 12 and 36 months from poor communities in the city of Recife, Brazil. This prevalence was evaluated along with the type and duration of feeding, supplementary diet in terms of cariogenicity and quantity of sugar intake. Of the 468 children studied, 28.46% presented caries and the association between the variable of a cariogenic diet and caries was strongly significant (x2 = 13.36 and p < 0.001). From the results of the present study it is possible to draw the followin

The effects of periodontal therapy on serum and salivary leptin levels in chronic periodontitis patients with normal body mass index.

SUMMARY: Leptin concentrations are altered in favour of pro health after periodontal therapy. BACKGROUND: Leptin, a non-glycosylated peptide hormone, not only maintains fat stores, but is also an integral part of host defense repertoire. Leptin levels have been found to be altered in an array of inflammatory diseases including chronic periodontitis (CP), but the role of non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) in altering the leptin concentrations in saliva and serum of CP patients is yet to be ascertained. The aim of the present study is to quantify leptin levels in CP patients having normal

Assessing risk factors for dental caries: a statistical modeling approach.

The problem of identifying potential determinants and predictors of dental caries is of key importance in caries research and it has received considerable attention in the scientific literature. From the methodological side, a broad range of statistical models is currently available to analyze dental caries indices (DMFT, dmfs, etc.). These models have been applied in several studies to investigate the impact of different risk factors on the cumulative severity of dental caries experience. However, in most of the cases (i) these studies focus on a very specific subset of risk factors; and (ii)

Clinical management for epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) consists of a group of genetic hereditary disorders in which patients frequently present fragile skin and mucosa that form blisters following minor trauma. More than 20 subtypes of EB have been recognized in the literature. Specific genetic mutations are well characterized for most the different EB subtypes and variants. The most common oral manifestations of EB are painful blisters affecting all the oral surfaces. Dental treatment for patients with EB consists of palliative therapy for its oral manifestations along with typical restorative and periodontal procedures

Preventive strategies and supportive treatment.

There is a preponderance of evidence in the literature that periodontal and other oral diseases, such as caries, can be treated and controlled by thorough mechanical plaque removal by the patient, the use of antimicrobial agents and antibiotics when necessary, and participation with the therapist in a well monitored, long-range program of supportive periodontal therapy. Recent evidence suggests that the control and prevention of oral disease, especially periodontitis, is especially important for patients with various systemic conditions that can be impacted by oral infections. It is far better
