Surface microstructure of PEEK scaffolds regulates osteogenic differentiation via the βPIX-RAC1-NOX1 pathway.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is widely applied in orthopedic implants, yet its intrinsic surface bioinertness limits stable osseointegration. Although a nature solution is modifying its surface to enhance cellular adhesion, other pathways related to osseointegration also hold significant value. Here, we combined fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing with a two-step poly (acrylic acid)-ethylenediamine (PAA-EDA) grafting method to engineer porous PEEK scaffolds with bioactive surface microstructures. Beyond improving hydrophilicity to optimize cellular adhesion, the modified surface activat

Carbon fiber-reinforced pedicle screws reduce artifacts in magnetic resonance imaging of patients with lumbar spondylodesis.

The study investigated whether the use of carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK screw material (CF-PEEK) can reduce magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) artifact formation. Two consecutive groups of patients were treated for degenerative spinal disorders of the lumbar spine with dorsal transpedicular spinal fusion. The first group (n = 27) received titanium pedicle screws. The second group (n = 20) received CF-PEEK screws. All patients underwent an MRI assessment within the first four postoperative weeks. For each operated segment, the surface of the artifact-free vertebral body area was calculated as perc

Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Postoperative Fracture Healing Process without Metal Artifact: A Preliminary Report of a Novel Animal Model.

Background. Early radiological diagnosis and continual monitoring are of ultimate importance for timely treatment of delayed union, nonunion, and infection after bone fracture surgery. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could provide superior detailed images compared with X-ray and computed tomography (CT) without ionizing radiation, metal implants used for fracture fixation lead to abundant artifacts on MRI and thus prohibit accurate interpretation. The authors develop a novel intramedullary fixation model of rat femoral fracture using polyetheretherketone (PEEK) threaded rods and inve

Medical treatment of later-stage motor problems of Parkinson disease.

Parkinson disease progression is associated with the development of levodopa short-duration responses and dyskinesias, as well as gait freezing. Levodopa dose adjustment and adjunctive treatment with dopamine agonists form the major therapeutic strategies. Catechol O-methyltransferase inhibitors are also appropriate considerations, whereas other drugs, including selegiline, amantadine, anticholinergic agents, and propranolol, have a more minor role.

Synergistic Promotion of Vascular-Bone Regeneration with Poly (Ether-Ether-Ketone)/Calcium Silicate Composites through Surface Modification and Release of Bioactive Ions in Cranial Repair.

Bone reconstruction is a complex and continuous process that is closely related to the formation of blood vessels and bone. In this study, a strategy has been developed to fabricate the poly (ether-ether-ketone)/calcium silicate (PEEK/CS) scaffold with patterned microstructure and oxygen-containing functional groups for cranial repair through promoting angiogenesis and accelerating new bone formation. The hydrophilic property and protein adsorption of the scaffold were significantly improved due to surface modification. In vitro experiments demonstrate that the surface-modified PEEK/CS scaffol

Multifunctional Surface with Enhanced Angiogenesis for Improving Long-Term Osteogenic Fixation of Poly(ether ether ketone) Implants.

Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) is a biocompatible polymer, but the lack of angiogenesis makes the long-term osteogenic fixation of PEEK implants challenging, which has hampered their wider application in orthopedics. Herein, we develop a multifunctional micro-/nanostructured surface presenting hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoflowers and nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)2) nanoparticles on PEEK implants (sPEEK-Ni-HA) to tackle the problem. The results show that the reasonable release of Ni2+ from sPEEK-Ni-HA significantly facilitates the migration, tube formation, and angiogenic gene expression of human umbili

Comparison of the clinical and radiologic outcomes obtained with single- versus two-level anterior cervical decompression and fusion using stand-alone PEEK cages filled with allograft.

BACKGROUND: Although anterior cervical decompression and fusion with a stand-alone cage (ACDF-SAC) is accepted as a suitable procedure, the outcomes of the multi-level procedure remain controversial. The aim of this study is to compare the clinical and radiologic outcomes achieved with single versus two-level ACDF-SAC along with identification of the factors that contribute to loss in mean disc height (MDH) and change in cervical lordotic angle (CLA). METHODS: A total of 109 consecutive patients who underwent ACDF-SAC for degenerative spondylosis were reviewed. Patients were divided into two

Telescoping phenomenon in pathological gambling: association with gender and comorbidities.

The course of pathological gambling (PG) in women has been described as having a later age of initiation but a shorter time to problematic gambling ("telescoped"). This study examined evidence for telescoping and its relationship with comorbidities. Seventy-one treatment-seeking individuals with PG underwent a diagnostic interview to examine gambling behaviors, age at initiation of gambling, and time from initiation to meeting criteria for PG. The women had a higher mean age at gambling initiation compared with that of the men (mean [SD] age, 31.3 [13.0] years, compared with 22.4 [7.9] years;
