Angiographic factors influencing the success of endovascular treatment of arteriovenous malformations involving the corpus callosum.

OBJECTIVE: Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the corpus callosum are rare lesions, accounting for 9-11% of brain AVMs. Microsurgical resection of such lesions is difficult because of their deep location, and also because of possible neuropsychological disasters resulting from extended callosal resection. The introduction of endovascular and radiation therapies has fundamentally changed the outcome of these lesions. METHODS: We prospectively collected clinical and angiographic data on cerebral AVMs from 1995. We reviewed data from patients treated for an AVM of the corpus callosum and iden

Altered white matter integrity and development in children with autism: a combined voxel-based morphometry and diffusion imaging study.

BACKGROUND: A combined protocol of voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) was applied to investigate the neurodevelopment of gray and white matter in autism. METHODS: Twenty children with autism (mean age= 7 ± 2.75 years old; age range: 4-14; 2 girls) and 22 matched normally developing children (mean age = 7.68 ± 2.03 years old; age range: 4-11; 2 girls) underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). VBM was employed by applying the Template-o-Matic toolbox (TOM), a new approach which constructs the age-matched customized template for tissue segmentation. Also, the ap

Potential of the Mycoparasite, Verticillium lecanii, to Protect Citrus Fruit Against Penicillium digitatum, the Causal Agent of Green Mold: A Comparison with the Effect of Chitosan.

ABSTRACT The potential of the mycoparasite, Verticillium lecanii, at protecting citrus fruits against green mold was explored at the cellular level. Treatmentthe fruit with V. lecanii or chitosan prior to inoculation with the causal agent of green mold, Penicillium digitatum, markedly reduced disease development compared with that of nontreated control citrus fruits in which symptoms were visible by 3 days after inoculation with the pathogen. Scanning electron microscope investigations of citrus samples, collected 5 days after inoculation with the pathogen, revealed striking differences in the

Functional hyperconnectivity between corticocerebellar networks and altered decision making in young adult cannabis users: Evidence from 7T and multivariate pattern analysis.

Decision-making (DM) impairments are important predictors of cannabis initiation and continued use. In cannabis users, how decision-making abnormalities related to structural and functional connectivity in the brain are not fully understood. We employed a three-method multimodal image analysis and multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) on high dimensional 7 tesla MRI images examining functional connectivity, white matter microstructure and gray matter volume in a group of cannabis users and non-users. Neuroimaging and cognitive analyses were performed on 92 CU and 92 age- matched NU from a total

Comparison of motor recovery after neonatal and adult hemidecortication.

Hemidecortication produces a wide range of cognitive and motor symptoms in both children and lab animals that are generally far greater than smaller bilateral focal lesions of cerebral cortex. Although there have been many studies of motor functions after hemidecortication, the analyses largely have been of general motor functions rather than of more skilled motor functions such as forelimb reaching. The objective of the present experiment was to analyze the sensorimotor forelimb function of rats after infant or adult hemidecortication by utilizing multiple motor analyses. Rats were given hemi

Two Novel HSD17B4 Heterozygous Mutations in Association With D-Bifunctional Protein Deficiency: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Background: D-Bifunctional protein deficiency (D-BPD) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by peroxisomal β-oxidation defects. According to the different activities of 2-enoyl-CoA hydratase and 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase protein units, D-bifunctional protein defects can be divided into four types. The typical symptoms include hypotonia and seizures. The gene that encodes D-BP was HSD17B4, which is located in chromosome 5q23.1. Case Presentation: We report the first case of D-BPD in a Chinese patient with neonatal onset. Cosmetic malformations, severe hypotonia and seizures are promin

A Corticocortical Circuit Directly Links Retrosplenial Cortex to M2 in the Mouse.

UNLABELLED: Retrosplenial cortex (RSC) is a dorsomedial parietal area involved in a range of cognitive functions, including episodic memory, navigation, and spatial memory. Anatomically, the RSC receives inputs from dorsal hippocampal networks and in turn projects to medial neocortical areas. A particularly prominent projection extends rostrally to the posterior secondary motor cortex (M2), suggesting a functional corticocortical link from the RSC to M2 and thus a bridge between hippocampal and neocortical networks involved in mnemonic and sensorimotor aspects of navigation. We investigated th

Perceptual priming does not transfer interhemispherically in the acallosal brain.

Acallosal participants usually do not display any disconnection signs in tasks requiring an explicit or declarative type of response. They can accurately compare stimuli placed in each hand and they perform normally on lateralized recognition tasks. They, however, show impairment in tasks assessing interdependent motor control, bilateral coordination and they are also unable to intermanually transfer an implicit procedural motor skill. These deficits suggest that compensation might be limited when a motor component is involved. Alternately, it is also possible that interhemispheric transmissio

Ipsilateral inhibitory rTMS restores interhemispheric motor cortex balance and reduces phantom limb pain: an exploratory longitudinal nTMS mapping study.

BACKGROUND: Phantom limb pain (PLP) is a debilitating condition associated with maladaptive neuroplastic changes following limb amputation. The prevailing neuromodulatory approach targets the deafferented contralateral motor cortex, yet interhemispheric imbalance is increasingly recognized as a central pathophysiological feature of PLP. We investigated whether inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) applied to the ipsilateral (unaffected) hemisphere could reduce PLP and induce measurable normalization of interhemispheric cortical asymmetry. METHODS: Two individuals with

ASCL1 and OLIG2 Expression Dynamics Control Glial Cell Fate and Regional Diversity in the Dorsal Forebrain.

Gliogenesis is a multistep process in which glial progenitors are specified into migrating and proliferating precursor cells that subsequently differentiate into mature astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. How these developmental processes are coordinated to generate the diverse glial lineages across gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) remains poorly understood. Here, we show that the basic-helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor ASCL1 serves as a direct mechanistic link between these processes in the dorsal forebrain. Notably, ASCL1 is dynamically expressed in glial progenitor cells, init

Distinctive hydrocephalus-like phenotype in NOTCH2NLC-related neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease: clinicopathological features and therapeutic implications.

NOTCH2NLC-related neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with marked clinical heterogeneity and an increasingly recognized phenotypic spectrum. Although hydrocephalus-like presentations, i.e. ventriculomegaly with concomitant with cognition, motor, and/or bladder dysfunctions, have been observed in NIID sporadically, their prevalence, clinicopathological characteristics, and potential clinical implications remain poorly understood. This retrospective cohort study systematically characterized this newly recognized hydrocephalus-like phenotype.

Vestibular schwannoma associated normal pressure hydrocephalus: clinical features and shunt responsiveness compared with idiopathic NPH.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular schwannoma (VS) is commonly associated with obstructive hydrocephalus due to mass effect; however, a rarer communicating form resembling normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) has also been described, possibly related to impaired CSF absorption from elevated CSF protein. We aimed to characterize the clinical and imaging features of VS-associated NPH (VS-NPH) and compare them with those of an idiopathic NPH (iNPH) cohort. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 18 patients with VS-NPH identified between 2008 and 2024. For comparison, 41 iNPH patients were drawn from a prospect

A 2-Stage Approach in Managing Diabetic Forefoot Ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Forefoot plantar ulcers in patients with diabetic neuropathy are considered to be primarily the result of increased shear forces applied over prominent plantar bony prominences. The purpose of this article is to describe a 2-stage treatment pathway utilizing an outpatient percutaneous tendon-Achilles lengthening (TAL) as the first stage procedure and subsequent proximal metatarsal osteotomy (MTO) as a second stage procedure for a persistent or recurrent ulcer. METHODS: A consecutive 112 patients (146 feet), who presented to our Multidisciplinary Diabetic Foot Team clinics since Fe

Connectome mapping with edge density imaging differentiates pediatric mild traumatic brain injury from typically developing controls: proof of concept.

BACKGROUND: Although acute neurologic impairment might be transient, other long-term effects can be observed with mild traumatic brain injury. However, when pediatric patients with mild traumatic brain injury present for medical care, conventional imaging with CT and MR imaging often does not reveal abnormalities. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether edge density imaging can separate pediatric mild traumatic brain injury from typically developing controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects were recruited as part of the "Therapeutic Resources for Attention Improvement using Neuroimaging in Traumatic

Modulating Regional Motor Cortical Excitability with Noninvasive Brain Stimulation Results in Neurochemical Changes in Bilateral Motor Cortices.

Learning a novel motor skill is dependent both on regional changes within the primary motor cortex (M1) contralateral to the active hand and also on modulation between and within anatomically distant but functionally connected brain regions. Interregional changes are particularly important in functional recovery after stroke, when critical plastic changes underpinning behavioral improvements are observed in both ipsilesional and contralesional M1s. It is increasingly understood that reduction in GABA in the contralateral M1 is necessary to allow learning of a motor task. However, the physiolog

A case of Raine syndrome presenting with facial dysmorphy and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Raine syndrome (RS) - an extremely rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder, is caused by a biallelic mutation in the FAM20C gene. Some of the most common clinical features include generalized osteosclerosis with a periosteal bone formation, dysmorphic face, and thoracic hypoplasia. Many cases have also been reported with oro-dental abnormalities, and developmental delay. Most of the cases result in neonatal death. However, a few non-lethal RS cases have been reported where patients survive till adulthood and exhibits a heterogeneous clinical phenotype. Clinical diagnosis of RS ha

Sex differences in associations between white matter microstructure and gonadal hormones in children and adolescents with prenatal alcohol exposure.

UNLABELLED: Despite accumulating evidence from animal models demonstrating that prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) results in life-long neuroendocrine dysregulation, very little is known on this topic among humans with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). We expected that alterations in gonadal hormones might interfere with the typical development of white matter (WM) myelination, and in a sex-dependent manner, in human adolescents with FASD. In order to investigate this hypothesis, we used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to assess: 1) whether or not sex moderates the impact of PAE on WM micro

Tomato histone H2B monoubiquitination enzymes SlHUB1 and SlHUB2 contribute to disease resistance against Botrytis cinerea through modulating the balance between SA- and JA/ET-mediated signaling pathways.

BACKGROUND: Histone H2B monoubiquitination pathway has been shown to play critical roles in regulating growth/development and stress response in Arabidopsis. In the present study, we explored the involvement of the tomato histone H2B monoubiquitination pathway in defense response against Botrytis cinerea by functional analysis of SlHUB1 and SlHUB2, orthologues of the Arabidopsis AtHUB1/AtHUB2. METHODS: We used the TRV-based gene silencing system to knockdown the expression levels of SlHUB1 or SlHUB2 in tomato plants and compared the phenotype between the silenced and the control plants after
