Essential oils in an antiplaque and antigingivitis dentifrice: a 6-month study.

PURPOSE: To determine if a dentifrice formulated with the fixed combination of essential oils possessed antiplaque and antigingivitis properties. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a blinded, randomized, controlled clinical trial. The 6-month study had clinical examinations at baseline, 3 and 6 months. The examinations consisted of three indices; a plaque index, the Modified Gingival Index and a bleeding index. RESULTS: At 6 months, the essential oil-containing dentifrice group had statistically significantly (P < 0.001) lower whole-mouth and interproximal mean plaque index scores exhibit

The use of a triclosan/copolymer dentifrice may retard the progression of periodontitis.

The present investigation was performed to examine if triclosan and a copolymer, incorporated in a dentifrice and used by periodontitis-susceptible subjects could influence clinical symptoms characteristic of recurrent periodontitis. 60 subjects, 34 to 67 years of age, were recruited for the study. They were randomly selected from a group of patients previously treated for advanced periodontal disease. This treatment had included oral hygiene instruction, subgingival debridement, but no surgical therapy. The patients had, during a 3-5 year period following active therapy, been enrolled in a ma

Caries prevalence and associated predisposing conditions in recently hospitalized elderly persons.

The prevalence of caries and caries risk factors was studied among 120 consecutively hospitalized elderly persons. Coronal caries was recorded using the WHO criteria, and active and inactive root caries in accordance with Fejerskov et al. The CPITN was used to evaluate the periodontal state and plaque accumulation in accordance with Löe & Silness. Of the 1212 teeth examined 5% had active coronal caries (2% inactive), 14% active root caries (2% inactive), and 10% fillings with recurrent caries. No relationship was found between caries prevalence, degree of dependence, number of medicaments, age

Nicotine replacement therapy sampling for cigarette cessation in dental care: A National Dental Practice-Based Research Network cluster randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cigarette smoking is detrimental to oral health. Oral health professionals rarely prescribe smoking cessation medications. Nicotine replacement therapy sampling (NRTS), providing brief starter courses of NRT, could improve provision of NRT and promote cessation. The aim of the Free Samples for Health (FreSH) study was to test the effectiveness of NRTS compared with enhanced usual care on long-term abstinence from combustible tobacco. DESIGN: Two-group, pragmatic, cluster (dental practice) randomized clinical trial. SETTING: The study was conducted in the Midwest and Nort

A survey was administered to 55 homeless adolescents and young adults aged 14 to 28 years who presented for care at a community health center in Seattle, Washington in 2005. Forty-five valid surveys were analyzed. The aim of the study was to identify factors associated with self-reported oral health. The most common self-reported dental problem was sensitive teeth (52.6%), followed by discolored teeth (48.6%), toothache (38.5%), or a broken tooth (37.8%). Dental problems were associated with lower self-reported oral health, while non-high school graduates, mixed race youths, and methamphetamin

Periodontal disease status of an indigenous population of Guatemala, Central America.

OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to determine the periodontal disease status of an indigenous Indian community of rural Central America (San Juan La Laguna, Guatemala), for comparison with results of similar studies in other populations, and with a view to performing future studies to address familial clustering of adult periodontitis. METHODS & RESULTS: An initial screen of 239 subjects aged 12-75 years from extended families suggested a high disease prevalence according to full-mouth pocket probing depths (PPDs), with more than 75% of subjects with one or more pockets of PPD > or =5 mm.

Longitudinal relationship between metabolic syndrome and periodontal disease among Japanese adults aged ≥70 years: the Niigata Study.

BACKGROUND: There has been little evaluation in longitudinal epidemiologic studies of the effect of metabolic syndrome (MetS) on periodontal status. The specific aim of this longitudinal study is to investigate whether MetS in the Japanese population could be a risk factor for periodontal disease. METHODS: A total of 125 older adults from Japan for whom data were available for the years 2003 to 2006 were selected for the current study. Full-mouth periodontal status, measured as clinical attachment level (CAL), was recorded at baseline and in follow-up examinations. Development of periodontal

Oral hygiene reinforcement in the simplified periodontal treatment of 1 hour.

AIM: To compare the clinical and microbiological outcome of the 1-h ultrasonic debridement of chronic periodontitis patients (CPP) with and without frequent sessions of oral hygiene reinforcement. METHODS: Clinical measurements and subgingival plaque were collected from 44 CPP at baseline, 3- and 6-months. The control group received a single session of 1-h full-mouth ultrasonic debridement, while oral hygiene instructions (OHI) were reiterated over four visits. In the test group, OHI were limited in the 1-h treatment session. At 3-months, both groups received additional debridement and OHI. T
