Somatic mutations in exon 17 of the TEK gene in vascular tumors and vascular malformations.

OBJECTIVE: As a common disease, the molecular etiology of noninherited vascular anomalies is still poorly understood. Recently, somatic mutations in exon 17 of the endothelial cell tyrosine kinase receptor Tie-2 (encoded by TEK) were identified in 49.1% of patients with common sporadic venous malformation, a subtype of vascular anomalies. We assessed whether such a mutational region also had a role in the Chinese population or in other subtypes of noninherited vascular anomalies (vascular tumors and vascular malformations). METHODS: Direct sequencing of polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplifi

Two cases of infundibular squamous cell carcinoma on the nose with aggressive clinical behavior: Case report and review of the published work.

Case 1 was a 75-year-old Japanese man who presented with a poorly demarcated, dark-red nodule with a destructive defect in the center, measuring 3 cm × 2 cm on the right wing of his nose. The histological diagnosis was a common form of infundibular squamous cell carcinoma. Atypical neoplastic cells radiated from the wall of a follicular infundibulum. The majority of neoplastic cells were positive for AE1/AE3 and 34βE12. Cytokeratin 17 expression was seen in the suprabasal cells of the deeply situated neoplastic components. Case 2 was a 73-year-old Japanese man who presented with a poorly demar

Mimickers of hand infections.

A variety of local or systemic conditions may mimic an infectious process in the hand and upper extremities. Familiarity with these conditions is important so that appropriate diagnosis and management may ensue. Most of the conditions presented in this article may be successfully managed nonsurgically; however, certain conditions such as the extravasation of a chemotherapy agent or retained foreign body require surgical intervention.

Comparison of transconjunctival versus subciliary approaches for orbital fractures: a review of 60 cases.

The increasing emphasis on open reduction in the management of orbital fractures has led to an extensive debate as to which approach provides adequate exposure for these fractures. This retrospective study compares the exposure provided and the rate of complications between transconjunctival and subciliary incisions for orbital rim and floor fractures. The charts of 55 patients with orbital fractures, treated with open reduction and internal fixation, were reviewed. A total of 30 subciliary and 30 transconjunctival incisions had been performed, and the adequacy of exposure as well as intraoper

A Rare Presentation of Crohn's Disease: A Case Report.

Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic, transmural inflammatory disorder that may affect any segment of the gastrointestinal tract and is frequently associated with extraintestinal manifestations, including hepatobiliary complications. Pyogenic liver abscesses (PLAs) represent a rare extraintestinal manifestation and are exceptionally uncommon as the initial presentation of CD, with only a few cases reported to date. We describe a previously healthy 39-year-old man, an active smoker, presenting with five days of fever, shivering, myalgias, anorexia, and constipation. On admission, he was febrile, t

Intraabdominal Intravascular Papillary Endothelial Hyperplasia (Masson's Tumor): A Rare and Novel Cause of Gastrointestinal Bleeding.

Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH), or Masson's tumor, a rare benign vascular lesion, occurs mainly in the head, neck, and hands in the human population. Aberrant tumor locations have been rarely reported. We present a case of a patient with chronic abdominal pain and melena of variable severity due to a Masson's tumor, with no apparent Masson's tumor-associated comorbidities, along with a comprehensive review of the literature. Using PubMed, a search engine provided by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, we searched for all reports

Vascular anomalies in children.

Vascular anomalies are divided in two major categories: tumours (such as infantile hemangiomas) and malformations. Hemangiomas are common benign neoplasms that undergo a proliferative phase followed by stabilization and eventual spontaneous involution, whereas vascular malformations are rare structural anomalies representing morphogenetic errors of developing blood vessels and lymphatics. It is important to properly diagnose vascular anomalies early in childhood because of their distinct differences in morbidity, prognosis and need for a multidisciplinary management. We discuss a number of cha

A Comparative Study of CSF Viral RNA Loads between HIV Positive Patients with Neurological Manifestations and Neurologically Asymptomatic HIV Patients.

INTRODUCTION: There are conflicting reports in literature about correlation of CSF viral RNA levels with neurological manifestations in HIV positive patients. Many studies in animals and human subjects have shown that CSF HIV-1 RNA can be useful as a specific marker of HIV induced neuropathology. To the contrary there are studies which show that neurological disease states can occur in absence of significant increase of CSF HIV RNA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective study conducted at Base hospital Delhi Cantt, New Delhi, a tertiary care hospitals for HIV patients. The study perio

Lactobacillus acidophilus protects against Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis infection by regulating the autophagy of macrophages and maintaining gut microbiota homeostasis in C57BL/6 mice.

UNLABELLED: Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis (C. p), a facultative intracellular bacterium, is an important zoonotic pathogen that causes abscesses and pyogenic granulomas. The relationship between gut microbiota and host health or diseases has received increasing attention. However, the role of gut microbiota in the process of C. p infection is still unclear. In this study, we established a C. p infection model in C57BL/6 mice and examined the impact of preemptive oral administration Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus) on infection. Our findings revealed that C. p infection led to pr

Cutaneous epithelioid angiomatous nodule: different views or interpretations in the analysis of ten new cases.

Classification schemes proposed for vascular lesions are the subjects of significant controversy. Cutaneous epithelioid angiomatous nodule (CEAN) was described in 2004, but there is no agreement as to whether this is a distinct entity or a type of either epithelioid hemangioma or angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia. We present a typical case of CEAN and discuss nine other cases from our institution. We then provide two opposing viewpoints concerning its classification.
