Chronic oral graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) is a complex, frequent, and highly impactful complication of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT). It represents the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in long-term alloHCT survivors. cGVHD can affect almost any visceral organ system and commonly affects the skin, eyes and mouth, manifesting with signs and symptoms similar to other known immune-mediated and autoimmune diseases. Oral manifestations of GVHD include inflammation, thinning, and ulceration of oral mucosal tissues (similar to lichen planus), lymphocyte-mediated

We observed 3 patients with successive scleroderma (SS) and (what is considered to be) sarcoidosis (SA). The diagnosis SS included in the 3 patients: Raynaud's syndrome with pulpal necrosis and capillaritis, sclerodactylia and acro-osteolysis, multiple joint pain and FAN+. Also observed were: esophagus involvement (n = 3), pulmonary artery hypertension (n = 1), telangiectasia (n = 2) and anti-Scl 70 (n = 2). Initially, all patients had restrictive pulmonary disease. SS was diagnosed 5 to 9 years prior to SA in 2 patients. Diagnosis of SA was based on the following arguments: Loëfgren's syndrom

INTRODUCTION: Ectopic calcifications (ECs) and heterotopic ossifications (HOs) form in non-mineralized tissues, most often in subcutaneous and muscular areas. Local and systemic complications can cause severe disability. Systemic administration of sodium thiosulfate (STS) gives promising results but is difficult to use in clinical practice.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of topical STS in ECs and HOs.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the CATSS-O registry that included patients receiving topical STS 25 % prepared by the pharmacy of Limoges hospital during 2014-2020. The ef

The murine bleomycin (BLM)-induced fibrosis model is the most widely used in systemic sclerosis (SSc) studies. It has been reported that systemic delivery of BLM via continuous diffusion from subcutaneously implanted osmotic minipumps can cause fibrosis of the skin, lungs, and other internal organs. However, the mouse strain, dosage of BLM, administration period, and additional important features differ from one report to the next. In this study, by employing the pump model in C57BL/6J mice, we show a dose-dependent increase in lung fibrosis by day 28 and a transient increase in dermal thickne

BACKGROUND: Human parvovirus B19 is a small, single-stranded DNA virus encoding two structural capsid proteins and a nonstructural protein. It is the aetiological agent of erythema infectiosum and transient aplastic crisis in patients with haemolytic anaemia, and has been associated with fetal death, arthritis and chronic anaemia. In recent years, the possible involvement of parvovirus B19 in systemic sclerosis (SSc) has been reported.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether human parvovirus B19 DNA can be detected in SSc skin tissue specimens.
METHODS: Normal subjects (n = 97) and patients with SS

AIM: Localised scleroderma of the face (LSF) can lead to significant aesthetical and functional abnormalities. Despite their quite frequent clinical observation, the odontostomatologic complications are not thoroughly described. Aim of the study was to describe the clinical features of the most frequent odontostomatologic abnormalities of LSF and to propose clinical and radiologic criteria for the assessment and follow-up of these complications.
METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional, multicenter study involving a multidisciplinary team formed by paediatric rheumatologists, orthodontists and

The aim of this study is to objectively evaluate whether linear scleroderma (LS) follows Blaschko's lines (BL) in Korean patients using digital image processing. Thirty-two patients with LS were examined. According to the patients' clinical photographs, their skin lesions were plotted on the head and body charts. With the aid of graphics software, a digital image was produced that included an overlay of all the individual lesions and was used to compare the graphics with the published BL. To investigate the image similarity between the graphic patterns of the LS and BL, each case was analyzed

Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS) is an uncommon disorder and characterized by a slowly, an acquired progressive atrophy involving skin, soft tissue, cartilage, and bony structures. Accompanying atrophies of the other parts of the body are rarely reported. The aim of this study is to report a case that had contralateral lower extremity atrophy with PRS, and to review the related etiologic features, physiopathology, and mechanism. The patient who admitted for his facial atrophy also had atrophy of his contralateral extremity. This extremity was also short in length when compared with other extremity

A 24 year old woman in the 33rd week of pregnancy developed progressive neurological complications with right sided hemiparesis in association with the occurrence of linear scleroderma "en coup de sabre" (LSCS) and pre-existing plaque-morphea, already being treated by balneophototherapy. Further progression of neurological symptoms led to a caesarean section with the delivery of a healthy child. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed focal T2 signal increases in the left frontoparietal region directly adjacent to the area of LSCS. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed oligoclonal bands,

Study of 18 biopsy specimens in 11 patients with L-tryptophan-related eosinophiliamyalgia (fasciitis) syndrome showed hyaline sclerodermoid changes. Dermal scleroderma was found in eight of nine punch biopsy specimens and eight of nine excisional biopsy specimens. Fascial scleroderma was found in eight excisional biopsy specimens. One specimen obtained by excision had no fascia present. Eleven biopsy specimens showed edema of the dermis, and 13 showed dilated lymphatic structures; thus, the clinical picture of edematous sclerosis was confirmed. Mucinous fasciitis was present in five excisional

In Wegener's granulomatosis peripheral nerves are more often involved than central nervous structures; functional psychoses are secondary e.g. to renal complications. Neurologic-psychiatric symptoms are varied and result from local spread from the upper respiratory tract with separate granulomata and vasculitis. Striped muscle is involved in about 10% of cases. Specific vegetative disturbances of function do not appear to occur. This is also true for Granuloma gangrenescens. Its multicentric inflammatory, ulcerating and necrotic foci involve midline structures and often start at the anterior n

Corticosteroids are the first-line treatment for patients with inflammatory myopathies. Myositis can be a clinical feature of scleroderma (polymyositis-scleroderma overlap syndrome), and treatment of this syndrome is a challenge for clinicians because moderate to high doses of corticosteroids are considered a risk factor for development of acute kidney injury in affected patients. We report here the case of a 56-year-old woman with scleroderma who developed polymyositis and was successfully treated with rituximab. Initial treatment of the polymyositis with prednisolone 40 mg/day was rapidly ta

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus and the prediabetic state are associated with a number of skin manifestations. This study is a systematic review of the following manifestations: acanthosis nigricans (AN), skin tags (ST), diabetic dermopathy (DD), rubeosis faciei (RF), pruritus (PR), granuloma annulare (GA), necrobiosis lipoidica (NL), scleroedema diabeticorum (SD) and bullosis diabeticorum (BD). These conditions possibly relate to underlying diabetogenic mechanisms. Our aim was to determine whether skin signs are feasible as cutaneous markers for the prediabetic or diabetic state.
METHODS: Da

In Systemic Sclerosis (SSc), digital ulcers (DU) are painful, difficult to heal, and frequently infected. To reduce the risk of bacterial infection and to prevent chronicity, it is essential to carefully remove necrotic tissue from DU, with maximum patient comfort. Debridement, although very efficacious, is invasive and causes local pain: lidocaine is a local anesthetic commonly used as to fight pain during debridement procedures. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of lidocaine 4 % in pain control during debridement procedure of DU in SSc. One hundred eight DU characterized by p

A 32-year-old woman and her 35-year-old sister presented with plaques of scleroderma en coup de sabre. The younger sister's disease was more severe and preceded the older sister's by 10 years. This is the second reported case of familial en coup de sabre, and the first case of horizontal transmission. Treatment of the younger sister with antimalarials and narrow-band ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) phototherapy slowed disease progression and reversed hair loss. The observation that NB-UVB was effective in this case of linear scleroderma suggests that it may be indicated as a therapy for cutaneous scler

We presented two cases with symptoms of diffuse swelling of subcutaneous tissue, stiffness and tenderness of involved areas, fever, eosinophilia and hypergammaglobulinemia. The inflammatory infiltrates consisting of lymphocytes, plasma cells and eosinophils were yielded in fascia. The difficulties in differentition of the symptoms between eosinophilic fasciitis and "eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome" are discussed.
