The avian circadian system is composed of the retina, the mammalian homolog region of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SNC), and the pineal gland. The retina, itself, displays many rhythmic physiological events, such as movements of photoreceptor cells, opsin expression, retinal reisomerization, and melatonin and dopamine production and secretion. Altogether, these rhythmic events are coordinated to predict environmental changes in light conditions during the day, optimizing retina function. The authors investigated the expression pattern of the melanopsin genes Opn4x and Opn4m, the clock genes Cl

Daily torpor in the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus) is a precisely timed event gated by the circadian clock situated in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of the hypothalamus. Timing-controlled hypothermia during which body temperature (Tb) decreases to approximately 15 degrees C implies temperature compensation of the circadian system. Nevertheless, it remains controversial how the molecular clockwork functions at those low Tb values and whether the torpor bout affects the circadian system. In this study, we investigated rhythmic clock and clock-related gene as well as protein expression

Shortening daylight (to 10.5 to 11 h/d) slightly reduced the rest period (the interval between last egg and first clutch), whereas feeding a low-protein diet during the 22-d period following 8 d of feed withdrawal (FW) (recovery period) markedly extended it. Feed withdrawal accompanied by a short-daylight regime and a long recovery period led to the best postmolt production. However, production per hen housed during the whole experimental period was only slightly increased. Thus, a long rest period may mask the positive effects of short daylight and recovery diet. At least 140 to 170 d were ne

One of the limiting factors in breeding and genetic research is the time required to develop pure lines. This is due, on the one hand, to the prolonged vegetative period of a single generation and, on the other hand, to the specifics of inbreeding, which typically requires 4-6 consecutive generations of self-pollination in plant material. Researchers have always sought approaches that enable the rapid development of homozygous plant lines. Consequently, methods such as greenhouse cultivation during the autumn-winter period, single-seed descent, shuttle breeding, embryo culture, and doubled hap

In mammals, the pineal gland secretes melatonin, which serves as a crucial signal for interpreting photoperiod cues. As a seasonal breeder, the giant panda typically mates during the spring. To fully elucidate melatonin's influence on the seasonal estrus of female giant pandas, we conducted an in-depth analysis of urinary hormones. First, we found that urinary melatonin and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) levels exhibit distinct seasonal variations over the annual cycle. From January to April, melatonin levels decline sharply from their annual peak, while GnRH levels rise rapidly and rem

Environmental effects on pathogen abundance and access are precursors to mastitis. Indeed, high heat and humidity, and unsanitary housing and equipment, are associated with greater pathogen load and exposure. Although less is known about effects of environment on a cow's ability to resist infection, several indicators suggest that it can affect pathogen responses. Mastitis incidence and bulk tank somatic cell count vary with season, typically peaking in summer. Recent controlled studies have revealed that heat stress exposure results in changes in the microbiome of the cow and her environment,

Hemidesmus indicus (L.) R. Br. ex Schult., commonly known as Indian sarsaparilla or Anantamul, is an ethnopharmacologically important medicinal plant from the family Apocynaceae. Biosynthesis of an array of bioactive compounds such as methoxybenzaldehydes and their derivatives has been accountable for its intensive medicinal attributes. Low seed setting, over-exploitation from natural habitat and a need for selection and preservation of elite germplasms yielding higher levels of bioactive compounds have led researchers to enquire the standardization of micropropagation techniques and quantitat

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Vitamin D and folate are highly UV sensitive, and critical for maintaining health throughout the lifecycle. This study examines whether solar irradiance during the first trimester of pregnancy influences vitamin D receptor (VDR) and nuclear folate gene variant occurrence, and whether affected genes influence late-life biochemical/clinical phenotypes.
METHODOLOGY: 228 subjects were examined for periconceptional exposure to solar irradiance, variation in vitamin D/folate genes (polymerase chain reaction (PCR)), dietary intake (food frequency questionnaire (FFQ)) and i

Broiler breeder chickens show apparently abnormal behaviours when subjected to routine quantitative food restriction during rearing. By using a combination of videorecording and radiotelemetry, this experiment addressed the question of whether such behaviours are associated with de-arousal. In each of 2 years, 3 female chickens had radiotelemetry devices (Data Sciences) implanted surgically at 12 weeks of age, for measuring putative physiological indices of arousal (heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, telencephalic EEG). Subsequently, when caged individually and moving freely, they w

Reproductive endocrine patterns were characterized in female ocelots (Leopardus pardalis; n = 3), tigrinas (Leopardus tigrinus; n = 2), and margays (Leopardus wiedii; n = 2) housed in captivity in southern Brazil. Females were maintained as singletons and exposed to natural fluctuations in photoperiod. Cyclic changes in ovarian steroids were monitored by analyzing estrogen and progestogen metabolites in fecal samples collected five times weekly for 14 to 18 months. Based on intervals between fecal estrogen peaks, mean (+/- SEM) duration of the estrous cycle was 18.4 +/- 1.6 days for the ocelot

Experiments using the dwarf Siberian hamster Phodopus sungorus were carried out to determine possible neuroendocrine consequences of one-time and repeated exposures to 60 Hz magnetic fields (MF). Animals were maintained in either a short-light (SL, 8 h light:16 h dark) or long-light (LL, 16 h light:8 h dark) photoperiod. Acute (one-time, 15 min) exposure of male SL animals to a linearly polarized, horizontally oriented, 60 Hz MF (0.1 mT) gave rise to a statistically significant (P < .005) reduction in pineal melatonin content as determined 3 and 5 h after onset of darkness. In LL animals, acut

In mammals, a master circadian clock within the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus maintains the phase coherence among a wide array of behavioral and physiological circadian rhythms. Affective disorders are typically associated with disruption of this fine-tuned "internal synchronization," but whether this internal misalignment is part of the physiopathology of mood disorders is not clear. To date, depressive-like behavior in animal models has been induced by methods that fail to specifically target the SCN regulation of internal synchronization as the mode to generate depressio

Stress during developmental stage may cause psychological morbidities, and then the studies on stress are important in adolescent rodents. Restraint is used as a common stressor in rodents and the effects of restraint during the light cycle have been studied, but those of restraint during the dark cycle have not. The present study examined the effects of restraint during the light and dark cycles on anxiety behaviors in adolescent mice. Restraint for 3h during either the light or dark cycle impaired memory function in the fear conditioning test, but did not affect locomotor activity. In the el

We studied the influence of abnormal illumination regimen on cell composition of the central and peripheral organs of the immune system in ISIAH rats and control WAG rats. In ISIAH rats, 24-h illumination for 14 days led to more pronounced inhibition of cell proliferation and differentiation in the thymus and more pronounced decrease in splenocyte proliferation and T and B cell counts in the spleen in comparison with WAG rats; however, the level of antigen-presenting cells in the spleen of ISIAH increased. We concluded that ISIAH rats are more sensitive to abnormal illumination regimen than WA

Dopamine plays diverse and important roles in vertebrate biology, impacting behavior and physiology through actions mediated by specific G-protein-coupled receptors, one of which is the dopamine receptor D4 (Drd4). Here we present studies on the >100-fold daily rhythm in rat pineal Drd4 expression. Our studies indicate that Drd4 is the dominant dopamine receptor gene expressed in the pineal gland. The gene is expressed in pinealocytes at levels which are approximately 100-fold greater than in other tissues, except the retina, in which transcript levels are similar. Pineal Drd4 expression is ci

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia continues to grapple with a persistent malaria burden, characterized by ongoing transmission and recurrent outbreaks. Human behavior influences both malaria exposure and the effectiveness of vector interventions, complicating malaria control efforts. Implementing tailored strategies that account for the complex interplay between human activities and vector behavior remains a challenge in both high- and low-transmission areas in Ethiopia, particularly for vulnerable highland populations and temporary labor migrants, due to lack of data. The aim of this study was to examine

The circadian clock located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in mammals entrains to ambient light via the retinal photoreceptors. This allows behavioral rhythms to change in synchrony with seasonal and daily changes in light period. Circadian rhythmicity is progressively disrupted in Huntington's disease (HD) and in HD mouse models such as the transgenic R6/2 line. Although retinal afferent inputs to the SCN are disrupted in R6/2 mice at late stages, they can respond to changes in light/dark cycles, as seen in jet lag and 23 h/d paradigms. To investigate photic entrainment and SCN function

While insulin secreted from pancreas plays a pivotal role in the control of glucose homeostasis, it also interacts with hypothalamic sites and negatively influences the energy balance. The present study was undertaken to reveal the functional interaction between cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART), a well-known anorexic peptide, and insulin within the framework of hypothalamus in the regulation of feeding behavior and body weight. Insulin was administered daily by intracerebroventricular (icv) route, alone or in combination with CART (icv) for a period of seven days. Immediate

PURPOSE: Intraocular pressure (IOP) fluctuates with a robust circadian rhythm, which is synchronized to organismal rhythmicity through the master circadian clock located in the suprachiasmatic nuclei. The mechanisms maintaining circadian synchrony between the suprachiasmatic nuclei and IOP rhythms are presently unknown. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the necessity and sufficiency of adrenal and glucocorticoid function for the entrainment of iris-ciliary body (iris-CB) and IOP circadian rhythms in mice.
METHODS: Iris-CB complexes were dissected from C57Bl/6J mice that were kept in 1
