Optimized lower leg injury probability curves from postmortem human subject tests under axial impacts.

OBJECTIVE: Derive optimum injury probability curves to describe human tolerance of the lower leg using parametric survival analysis. METHODS: The study reexamined lower leg postmortem human subjects (PMHS) data from a large group of specimens. Briefly, axial loading experiments were conducted by impacting the plantar surface of the foot. Both injury and noninjury tests were included in the testing process. They were identified by pre- and posttest radiographic images and detailed dissection following the impact test. Fractures included injuries to the calcaneus and distal tibia-fibula complex

Anatomy of the iliolumbar ligament: a review of its anatomy and a magnetic resonance study.

Data of the postmortem studies of the iliolumbar ligament are controversial because of the number, complexity, and variability of the structures present in the lumbosacral region. The objective of this work was to study the anatomy of the iliolumbar ligament to resolve some clinical problems: (1) do anatomic bases exist that can explain the lumbar painful syndrome termed "iliolumbar syndrome?" (2) do iliolumbar ligament varieties exist that can influence lumbosacral joint stability? Magnetic resonance was used to analyze the anatomic structure of the iliolumbar ligament of live human beings. T

Intracapsular hip fracture and the region-specific loss of cortical bone: analysis by peripheral quantitative computed tomography.

Generalized bone loss within the femoral neck accounts for only 15% of the increase in intracapsular hip fracture risk between the ages of 60 and 80 years. Conventional histology has shown that there is no difference in cancellous bone area between cases of intracapsular fracture and age and sex-matched controls. Rather, a loss of cortical bone thickness and increased porosity is the key feature with the greatest change occurring in those regions maximally loaded during a fall (the inferoanterior [IA] to superoposterior [SP] axis). We have now reexamined this finding using peripheral quantitat

Kinematics of human cadaver cervical spine during low speed rear-end impacts.

The purposes of this study were to measure the relative linear and angular displacements of each pair of adjacent cervical vertebrae and to compute changes in distance between two adjacent facet joint landmarks during low posterior-anterior (+Gx) acceleration without significant hyperextension of the head. A total of twentysix low speed rear-end impacts were conducted using six postmortem human specimens. Each cadaver was instrumented with two to three neck targets embedded in each cervical vertebra and nine accelerometers on the head. Sequential x-ray images were collected and analyzed. Two s

Hippocampal Availability of the α7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor in Recent-Onset Psychosis.

IMPORTANCE: Studies using human postmortem tissue and imaging with positron emission tomography (PET) support a low hippocampal availability of the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7-nAChR) in psychotic conditions, particularly in schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (nonaffective psychosis). If validated further, the finding may have implications for clinical diagnosis and treatment. OBJECTIVE: To test for lower availability of the α7-nAChR in the hippocampus of individuals with recent-onset psychosis compared with healthy control individuals and its association with lower cognitiv

Retrograde ascending aortic dissection as an early complication of thoracic endovascular aortic repair.

OBJECTIVE: Retrograde ascending aortic dissection (rAAD) is a potential complication of thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR), yet little data exist regarding its occurrence. This study examines the incidence, etiology, and outcome of this event. METHODS: A prospective institutional database was used to identify cases of acute rAAD following TEVAR from a cohort of 309 consecutive procedures from March 2005 (date of initial Food and Drug Administration approval) to September 2010. The database was analyzed for the complication of rAAD as well as relevant patient and operative variables.

Persistently positive cultures and outcome in invasive neonatal candidiasis.

BACKGROUND: A persistently positive culture >24 h after starting antibiotic therapy has been correlated with adverse outcome in several invasive bacterial infections, but few reports address persistent positivity and outcome in infections caused by fungi and other pathogens that replicate more slowly and therefore may succumb less quickly to therapy. METHODS: To assess whether positive culture >24 h after achieving target doses (amphotericin > or =0.5 mg/kg/day or fluconazole > or =6 mg/kg/day) of systemic antifungal therapy predicts focal infectious complication(s) or death from infection, w

Liver alterations and detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA and proteins in COVID-19 autopsies.

The most severe alterations in Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection are seen in the lung. However, other organs also are affected. Here, we report histopathologic findings in the liver and detection of viral proteins and RNA in COVID-19 autopsies performed at the Semmelweis University (Budapest, Hungary). Between March 2020 through March 2022, 150 autopsies on patients who died of COVID-19 were analyzed. Cause-of-death categories were formed based on the association with SARS-CoV-2 as strong, contributive, or w

Skull Abnormalities in Cadavers in the Gross Anatomy Lab.

BACKGROUND: The skull encompasses and houses one of the most important organs in the body-the brain-and like all tissues in the body, it is comprised of living cells that are constantly remodeling as this maintains the strength and homeostasis of the bone. In the present study, abnormal bone growth patterns were observed and the possible causes of said findings were investigated in multiple cadaver skulls dissected during head and neck anatomy courses at Detroit Mercy Dental over the past year. There are many factors, both intrinsic and extrinsic, with differences in stimulation to the skull r

18F-AV-1451 positron emission tomography in Alzheimer's disease and progressive supranuclear palsy.

The ability to assess the distribution and extent of tau pathology in Alzheimer's disease and progressive supranuclear palsy in vivo would help to develop biomarkers for these tauopathies and clinical trials of disease-modifying therapies. New radioligands for positron emission tomography have generated considerable interest, and controversy, in their potential as tau biomarkers. We assessed the radiotracer 18F-AV-1451 with positron emission tomography imaging to compare the distribution and intensity of tau pathology in 15 patients with Alzheimer's pathology (including amyloid-positive mild c

HIV-1-associated central nervous system dysfunction.

Despite more than 15 years of extensive investigative efforts, a complete understanding of the neurological consequences of HIV-1 CNS infection remains elusive. Although the resources of numerous investigators have been focused on studies of HIV-1-associated CNS disease, the complex nature of the disease processes that underlie the clinical, pathological, and cellular manifestations of HIV-1 CNS infection have required a larger volume of studies than was initially envisioned. Several major areas remain as the focus of current research efforts. One of the more pressing issues facing researchers

Correlation of radiographic and MRI parameters to morphological and biochemical assessment of intervertebral disc degeneration.

UNLABELLED: Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is a common finding in MRI scans and X-rays. However, their correlation to morphological and biochemical changes is not well established. In this study, radiological and MRI parameters of DDD were assessed and compared with morphological and biochemical findings of disc degeneration. Thirty-nine human lumbar discs (L1-S1), age 19-86 years, were harvested from eight cadavers. Within 48 h postmortem, MRIs in various spin-echo sequences and biplanar radiographs of intact spines were obtained. Individual discs with endplates were then sectioned in the mi

Frequency and pattern of skull base and vault fracture in isolated head trauma.

PURPOSE: In the literature, the number of studies on cases of injury due to isolated head trauma is limited. In addition, there are very few studies and publications on skull base and vault fractures in the forensic literature. This study aims to investigate the frequency and pattern of skull base and vault fractures in individuals exposed to isolated fatal and non-fatal head trauma. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional and descriptive study includes 1260 cases who were injured due to isolated head trauma during the 10-year period between Jan 1, 2010 and Nov 30, 2019. In cases of fatal

Magnetic Resonance Imaging in 50 Captive Non-domestic Felids - Technique and Imaging Diagnoses.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the recognized gold standard for diagnostic imaging of the central nervous system in human and veterinary patients. Information on the use of this modality and possible imaging abnormalities in captive non-domestic felids is currently limited to individual case reports or small case series. This retrospective study provides information on technique and imaging findings in a cohort of cases undergoing MRI at an academic Veterinary Medical Center. The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine MRI database was searched for non-domestic felids under

Neuropathological Institutions of Small Amiloid Beta и Neurofibrilar Tangles in Multial Sclerosis Cortex.

A comprehensive update of extracutaneous involvement of mycosis fungoides: A narrative review of literature.

Mycosis fungoides, the most prevalent subtype of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, primarily targets areas of the skin that of not exposed to sunlight. Nevertheless, it can involve extracutaneous tissues at any disease stage, especially during its advanced phases. Research suggests that all extracutaneous organs might be susceptible, though such cases are more commonly reported in autopsy studies and less so in clinical setting. The most recent comprehensive review of such extracutaneous manifestations in mycosis fungoides occurred almost a decade ago. With the aim of enhancing clinicians' understand
