Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, toxic and potentially toxic elements in Pelophylax esculentus complex embryos from the UNESCO-Protected Drava River Floodplain (Croatia).

River floodplains are dynamic ecosystems that trap and store pollutants transported through riverine processes, atmospheric deposition, and adjacent land use. Their role as sediment and nutrient retention zones also promotes the accumulation of persistent organic pollutants and (potentially) toxic elements. Amphibians, whose eggs and larvae develop directly in aquatic environments, are highly sensitive to such pollution and are therefore widely used as bioindicators of freshwater ecosystem health. This study provides a preliminary assessment of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH

Frequent Detection of Abasic Sites and O6-Methyl-2'-Deoxyguanosine and Absence of Substituted Aromatic DNA Adducts in Colorectal Tissue of Smokers and Meat-Eaters with Colorectal Cancer.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. Epidemiological studies have linked the consumption of processed and cooked red meat, as well as tobacco smoking, to increased CRC risk. Processed meats cured with nitrite contain genotoxic N-nitroso compounds (NOCs), and the consumption of both processed and unprocessed red meats can lead to endogenous NOC formation. High-temperature cooking of processed and unprocessed red meats produces genotoxic heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), many of which also arise in tobacco smoke.

Firefighter exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and black carbon during prescribed burns and wildfires.

Prescribed burns are valuable tools for landscape management, which reduce wildfire risk in fire-prone ecosystems. However, they generate smoke emissions containing hazardous pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and black carbon (BC). Here, PAHs were analyzed in atmospheric particulate matter (PM2.5) filters in firefighter's personal real-time BC monitors during prescribed burns and wildfires between 2022 and 2024 in Catalonia (NE Spain). The innovative analytical method using gas-chromatography coupled to Q-exactive Orbitrap mass spectrometry (GC-Orbitrap-MS) allows the

Cambered Bipyridyl Ligand with Extended Aryl System Enables Electrochemical Reduction of Carbon Dioxide and Bicarbonate by Mn(bpy)(CO)3Br-type Catalyst Immobilized on Carbon Nanotubes.

Heterogeneous materials containing molecular catalytic sites show promise for electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to energy-enriched carbon products. Interactions between the catalyst and the heterogeneous support increasingly are recognized as important in governing product selectivity and rate. Recent work on Mn(R-bpy)(CO)3Br type catalysts immobilized on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) demonstrated control of electrocatalytic behavior with steric modification of the molecular catalyst. Phenyl groups installed in the 4,4' positions of the bipyridine ligand (ph-bpy) maximized performance t

Assessment of the presence and risk associated with volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds in urban areas close to petrochemical parks.

This study monitored volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in urban areas near petrochemical industries using passive sampling. Sampling at six urban sites was conducted throughout 2023, with VOCs sampled every 14 days and SVOCs every 2 months, resulting in a total of 180 samples. VOCs and SVOCs were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, coupled to thermal desorption in the case of VOCs and after pressurised liquid extraction in the case of SVOCs. Alkanes were the VOCs found at the highest concentrations, with average concentrations between

Nrf2 Hyperactivation as a Driver of Radiotherapy Resistance and Suppressed Antitumor Immunity in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Alterations in the KEAP1/NFE2L2 (NRF2)/CUL3 pathway occur in ∼20% of human head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) and are associated with resistance to standard-of-care therapy. However, this pathway's role in radiotherapy resistance in HNSCC has not been well studied. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We generated genetically engineered mouse models and developed primary murine cancer cell lines harboring mutations commonly observed in human HNSCC, including inducible activation of PIK3CA and deletion of Trp53, with or without Keap1 loss. Primary tumors were initiated via 4-hydroxytamoxi

Co-exposure to phthalates and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and the risk of gestational hypertension in Chinese women.

Phthalates (PAEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are frequently detected in females of reproductive age. Many studies have found that environmental PAE and PAH levels are independent risk factors for gestational hypertension. However, exposure to both components is a more realistic scenario. To better assess the health effects of PAEs and PAHs in pregnant women, we explored the associations of exposure to both individual and combined PAEs and PAHs with gestational hypertension. This nested case-control study was a component of a prospective cohort study conducted in Beijing, China

Controlling the Photophysical Properties of a Series of Isostructural d6 Complexes Based on Cr0, MnI, and FeII.

Development of first-row transition metal complexes with similar luminescence and photoredox properties as widely used RuII polypyridines is attractive because metals from the first transition series are comparatively abundant and inexpensive. The weaker ligand field experienced by the valence d-electrons of first-row transition metals challenges the installation of the same types of metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited states as in precious metal complexes, due to rapid population of energetically lower-lying metal-centered (MC) states. In a family of isostructural tris(diisocyanide

Exosomes released by environmental pollutant-stimulated Keratinocytes/PBMCs can trigger psoriatic inflammation in recipient cells via the AhR signaling pathway.

Introduction: Exosomes, pivotal in intercellular communication during skin disease pathogenesis, have garnered substantial attention. However, the impact of environmental pollutants, such as benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and 2, 3, 7, 8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), on exosome release amid inflammatory skin diseases remains unexplored. This study addresses this gap by examining the influence of BaP and TCDD on exosome function, specifically focusing on immune-related pathway alterations in normal recipient keratinocytes and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Methods: HaCaT cells were trea

Generation, characterization, and toxicological assessment of reference ultrafine soot particles with different organic content for inhalation toxicological studies.

Ultrafine particles (UFP) are the smallest atmospheric particulate matter linked to air pollution-related diseases. The extent to which UFP's physical and chemical properties contribute to its toxicity remains unclear. It is hypothesized that UFP act as carriers for chemicals that drive biological responses. This study explores robust methods for generating reference UFP to understand these mechanisms and perform toxicological tests. Two types of combustion-related UFP with similar elemental carbon cores and physical properties but different organic loads were generated and characterized. Huma

Effects of antimicrobial peptides on membrane dynamics: A comparison of fluorescence and NMR experiments.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) represent a promising class of compounds to fight resistant infections. They are commonly thought to kill bacteria by perturbing the permeability of their cell membranes. However, bacterial killing requires a high coverage of the cell surface by bound peptides, at least in the case of cationic and amphipathic AMPs. Therefore, it is conceivable that peptide accumulation on the bacterial membranes might interfere with vital cellular functions also by perturbing bilayer dynamics, a hypothesis that has been termed "sand in the gearbox". Here we performed a systematic

Surfactant enhanced thermally activated persulfate remediating PAHs-contaminated soil: Insight into compatibility, degradation processes and mechanisms.

Although advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on persulfate (PS) is an attractive approach for repairing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated soils, limited oxidizability of PAHs and efficient in-situ activation of PS hinder its practical applications. In this study, we comprehensively examined the contributions of five representative surfactants on the oxidative remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil in terms of degradation kinetics of the pollutants, and further proposed an innovative coupling strategy of surfactant-enhanced thermally activated PS remediating PAHs-contami

Mechanistic study of ultrasound-assisted chromatography using plastic and stainless steel columns.

Based on the previous ultrasound-assisted chromatography (UAC) studies on plastic and stainless steel (SS) columns, this study explores the UAC mechanism by comparatively analyzing ultrasound effects on plastic and SS columns with C18 stationary phase when separating a mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) under various ultrasound intensities. The results showed a substantial difference in H values between the PEEK and SS columns under the influence of ultrasound agitation. Specifically, for the pyrene peak, as the ultrasonic intensity increased from 0% to 100% of 900 W, the H val

Environmental polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon exposure in relation to metabolic syndrome in US adults.

The present study examined the associations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposure with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components. Data were from 5181 US adults recruited in the National Health and Nutrition Examine Survey 2001-2012. Environmental PAH exposure was estimated as concentrations of urinary PAH metabolites. Weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and modified Poisson regression were separately conducted to estimate the associations of mixed and single PAH metabolites with MetS and its components. WQS regression analyses showed that participants with higher mixed PAH ex
