Emergency surgical care delivery in post-earthquake Haiti: Partners in Health and Zanmi Lasante experience.

BACKGROUND: The earthquake that struck Haiti on 12 January 2010 caused significant devastation to both the country and the existing healthcare infrastructure in both urban and rural areas. Most hospital and health care facilities in Port-au-Prince and the surrounding areas were significantly damaged or destroyed. Consequently, large groups of Haitians fled Port-au-Prince for rural areas to seek emergency medical and surgical care. In partnership with the Haitian Ministry of Health, Partners in Health (PIH) and Zanmi Lasante (ZL) have developed and maintained a network of regional and district

5G/6G mobile telephone technology, methodical progress, pertinent health protection, and artificial intelligence.

Global mobile data traffic is growing rapidly. Artificial intelligence (AI) plays an important role in this growth, and safety should be a priority in all aspects of this development. Adverse effects on human health with widespread use with upcoming 5G/6G mobile networks need to be addressed. AI with its growing capabilities needs to be explored for safety strategies. We elaborate the AI-based safety measures as 'Conceptual Framework' comprising "3RRs": risk-reducing devices, risk-reducing engineering and environment; and risk-reducing personalization/habits. For devices using frequencies <6 G

Climate change and child health: The growing burden of climate-related adverse health outcomes.

Climate change is increasingly recognized not only as an environmental issue but also as a major public health threat, becoming more evident through the rising frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. Immediate exposure to climate-related hazards-such as extreme heat, wildfires, storms, and floods-results in direct health impacts, while indirect effects emerge through ecosystem disruptions and socioeconomic shifts. Climate change can introduce or intensify health risks in regions that were previously unaffected. Effective monitoring of climate-related health developments enables publ

The toll of the cyclone: mental health impacts of tropical cyclones in coastal communities of India.

With extreme weather events growing in severity and frequency, interventions aimed at preventing associated health disorders in coastal communities have become salient. Coastal communities are expected to develop coping mechanisms to climate change related stressors. However, these frontline communities may need special assistance to effectively adapt to unprecedented climatic disasters. Existing infrastructure and policy support systems may be inadequate, resulting in residual vulnerabilities that require attention. We examine whether tropical cyclones inflict adverse mental health impacts on

From Surge to Sustainment: Rethinking Civilian Care for Wartime Casualties.

The shifting geopolitical landscape introduces a credible risk of sustained, high-casualty large-scale Combat Operations (LSCO) with peer adversaries. Managing combat casualties over extended durations at scale presents a fundamentally different challenge than the episodic surge demands of past disasters or recent military contingencies. This commentary examines Section 712 of the Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which authorizes the Military-Civilian Medical Surge Program (MCMSP). The program enables the Department of War (DoW) to fulfill its Title 10 responsibiliti

Protecting breastfeeding in emergencies: a concept analysis to inform midwifery education and practice.

In humanitarian emergencies, including natural disasters, armed conflict, famine, mass displacement, and disease outbreaks, breastfeeding is a lifesaving practice for mothers and infants. As a recognised human right, it provides safe nutrition and hydration without reliance on clean water, electricity, or external supplies. Breastfeeding protects against infection and malnutrition, supports maternal health, reduces stress through oxytocin release, strengthens bonding, and promotes resilience in unstable settings. Despite this, breastfeeding is frequently undermined by misconceptions, lack of p
