BACKGROUND: Blood cultures (BCx) are the gold standard for diagnosing blood stream infections. However, contamination remains a challenge and can increase cost, hospital days, and unnecessary antibiotic use. National goals are to keep overall BCx contamination rates to ≤3%. The effect of pH on the antimicrobial activity of Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil formulations was studied. Microemulsions, liposomal dispersions, multiple emulsions and a colloidal bed of sterile clay were formulated using 5% w/w of tea tree oil. A wide range of adjuvants including alhydrogel, saponin, Corynebacterium parvum, DDAB, Pfizer CP-20,961, oil adjuvants and several MDP analogues have been compared for their adjuvant activity in protecting mice against lethal Trypanosoma cruzi infection following immunization with a T. cruzi 90K cell surface glycoprotein. Only saponin was found to be effective. Promotion did not correlate with the ability to promote a particular Ig isotype; however, saponin was unique in its ability to promote cell-mediate immunity against the 90K glycoprotein.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative central nervous system infection (PCNSI) in patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures represents a serious problem that requires immediate attention. PCNSI most commonly manifests as meningitis, subdural empyema, and/or brain abscess.
