Demographic, epidemiological, and health transitions: are they relevant to population health patterns in Africa?

BackgroundStudies of trends in population changes and epidemiological profiles in the developing world have overwhelmingly relied upon the concepts of demographic, epidemiological, and health transitions, even though their usefulness in describing and understanding population and health trends in developing countries has been repeatedly called into question. The issue is particularly relevant for the study of population health patterns in Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, as the history and experience there differs substantially from that of Western Europe and North America, for which these conce

Twenty five years of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine - progress and priorities for future of radiation medicine and biology.

After the creation of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine in 1993 the Research Center for Radiation Medicine was among the first institutions to join the Academy (fig. 1). Estab lishing the Academy was among the first steps of the independent Ukrainian government and aimed to provide a high level health care for population. It was extremely needed for the minimization of Chornobyl medical consequences. This choice was related to a growing recognition of the scientific research in fulfilling the Сenter's mission - study of the effects of low dose radiation on human body and radiation pro

Mechanisms of development of morphological changes in mammals aboard biological satellites.

After orbital space flights lasting 19.5--22.5 days, disturbances are observed in mineral metabolism in rats, which are morphologically manifested as osteoporosis of the spongy sections of long hollow skeletal bones, periosteocytic osteolysis of them, atrophy and dystrophy of skeletal muscles, and inhibition of erythroid growth of bone marrow, which occurred and developed in weightlessness as a result of deprivation of motor activity due to removal (or reduction) of static load from the musculoskeletal system. Development of stress reaction, which is apparently intensified at certain stages of

Physiological mechanisms of adaptation to weightlessness. Data from experiments with animals in earth-orbit biosatellites.

Four experiments were carried out with mammals (white laboratory rats) in Kosmos biosatellites. The experimental results indicate that rather prolonged weightlessness does not cause pathological changes in internal organs. Changes were discovered in the metabolic and hormonal status of the organisms, allowing us to consider an 18-22-day space flight as a moderately stressful activity. Changes in the musculoskeletal system involved atrophy of particular muscle groups, adaptive transformation of the contractile properties of some of them, osteoporosis, and decreased durability of bony tissue. Experimental study of some features of the etiology and pathogenesis of motion sickness.

A study was made of vestibular stability in man as affected by acceleration in various directions and of acceleration affecting receptors of the vestibular apparatus with varying frequency. It was established that tolerance for vestibular stimulation in certain individuals may be affected by direction of acceleration and frequency of the action. Individual susceptibility to motion sickness is widely expressed under conditions of specific vestibular stimulation. The results obtained indicate that development of motion sickness does not depend on the activity of the vestibular analyzer and motio

Boron Chemicals in Drug Discovery and Development: Synthesis and Medicinal Perspective.

A standard goal of medicinal chemists has been to discover efficient and potent drug candidates with specific enzyme-inhibitor abilities. In this regard, boron-based bioactive compounds have provided amphiphilic properties to facilitate interaction with protein targets. Indeed, the spectrum of boron-based entities as drug candidates against many diseases has grown tremendously since the first clinically tested boron-based drug, Velcade. In this review, we collectively represent the current boron-containing drug candidates, boron-containing retinoids, benzoxaboroles, aminoboronic acid, carboran

Transcription Factor TBX5 Enhances Structural Complexity and Calcium Transient Synchronization in Spontaneously Active Neonatal Rat Cardiomyocyte Cultures.

Transduced cardiomyocyte-based constructs provide a promising platform for in vitro modeling cardiac disease and a source of cell products for treating cardiac diseases and, particularly, conduction system disorders. Neonatal rat cardiomyocyte cultures were transduced with a vector carrying a gene for the TBX5 transcription factor, which is involved in controlling the bioelectrical properties of cardiomyocytes. TBX5 overexpression was found to increase the number of functionally active cardiomyocyte clusters in a culture, to enhance their morphological complexity, to stimulate the establishmen

Continuous Light Exposure as Factor in Pro-Senescent Liver Remodeling: Key Role of Melatonin Deficiency.

Circadian rhythm disruption is a risk factor for metabolic and age-associated diseases. The liver is a key target of such desynchronosis. The effect of chronic continuous light exposure and the corrective effect of melatonin on the liver status were investigated in rats. Desynchronosis mediated by melatonin deficiency was shown to induce the formation of a pro-senescent and metabolically dysfunctional liver phenotype. Melatonin administration significantly reduced the severity of the identified disorders and prevented statistically significant deviations in most of the parameters under study.

Optimization of Exosome Isolation from Vitis vinifera Cell Cultures.

Plant extracellular vesicles (exosomes) are considered promising nanostructures for biomedical and biotechnological applications; however, methods for their isolation from plant cell cultures remain insufficiently optimized. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of exosome isolation from callus and suspension cultures of Vitis vinifera and to investigate the effects of culture age and extraction method on the yield of extracellular vesicles. It was demonstrated that suspension culture provides a higher exosome yield compared to callus tissue. Isolated particles were characterize

Cranial Findings of Pachycrocuta brevirostris (Hyaenidae, Carnivora) from the Taurida Cave (Crimea, Early Pleistocene).

Cranial materials of the large hyena Pachycrocuta brevirostris (Gervais, 1850) from the Early Pleistocene (~1.8-1.6 Ma) locality in the Taurida cave (Crimea) belong to individuals of different individual ages, from juvenile to senile. The relative facial length of the "short-faced hyena" P. brevirostris has been shown to be greater than that of the recent spotted hyena Crocuta сrocuta (Erxleben, 1777). As P. brevirostris matured, the facial and frontal regions increased significantly in height, and the dorsal profile line of the skull elevated noticeably. New material on P. brevirostris is of

Mellivora indosinica sp. nov. (Mustelidae, Carnivora): a Honey Badger from the Pleistocene of Vietnam.

A new honey badger, Mellivora indosinica sp. nov., is described on the basis of an isolated lower carnassial tooth from the Middle Pleistocene deposits of the Tham Hai cave in Northeast Vietnam (Lang Son Province). Judging by tooth measurements, the new species is larger than all known Mellivorini, including the medium-sized Recent Mellivora capensis, but much smaller than the Neogene giant Eomellivorini. This is the only representative of Mellivorinae in Southeast Asia and evidence for the presence of honey badgers in the Pleistocene Stegodon-Ailuropoda fauna.

First Record of Fossil Remains of Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus, Vespertilionidae, Chiroptera) in the Urals.

The paper reports a find of a left lower molar (m1) of a pipistrelle bat (Pipistrellus sp.) from Holocene deposits of the Ust-Log-5 rock shelter, which is on the right bank of the Irgina River at the boundary between Perm Krai and Sverdlovsk Oblast. Radiocarbon dating assigns the deposits containing the pipistrelle tooth to the Middle-to-Late Holocene transition. The find of Pipistrellus sp. is of considerable interest for understanding the past distribution history of bats of the genus in the Urals.

In Vivo UV-Induced Fluorescence Spectroscopy of Skin in Parkinson's Disease.

Characteristic patterns of UV-induced skin autofluorescence were determined for patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and associated with dysmetabolic alterations, such as nonenzymatic protein glycation, an increase in extracellular matrix stiffness, impaired metabolism of tissue fluorophores, mitochondrial dysfunction, and accumulation of aberrant proteins. Key differences in skin autofluorescence spectra were for the first time observed in PD, making it possible to discriminate between PD patients and healthy persons or individuals without signs of chronic neurodegeneration. Namely, skin fl

Regenerative Potential of Platelet-Rich Plasma in Diabetes Mellitus.

The regenerative potential of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) samples from patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) was studied in vitro. In a series of experiments, PRP was added to the culture medium of human dermal fibroblasts. The cells were tested for metabolic (including reactive oxygen species production), migration, and proliferative activities at several time points; growth factors and exosome levels were assessed in PRP and the medium. A lower proliferative effect, pro-oxidant properties, and toxicity were observed for PRPs from diabetic patients. Namely, treated fibroblasts showed low
