Household WIC Benefit Redemption Varies by Participant and Household Characteristics in Southern California.

BACKGROUND: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides benefits redeemable for select healthy foods, aligned with the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, to support healthy diets among pregnant and postpartum women, and their children to age 5 years, living in low-income households. WIC benefits are often not fully redeemed, limiting nutritional benefits of participation. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the associations of WIC participant, caregiver, and household characteristics with WIC food benefit redemption. DE

A Concept Analysis on Failure to Rescue in Maternal Health: Implications for Practice and Policy.

BACKGROUND: Although "Failure to Rescue" (FTR) has been widely studied in general healthcare contexts, and a few clinical specialties, its definition and implications remain underexplored within maternal health, particularly given the heightened risks for marginalized women. The quality measure was retired as a national quality metric before formal adoption into obstetric care, leaving significant gaps in maternal patient safety. High rates of preventable maternal morbidity and mortality, highlight the urgent need to explore and define this concept specifically within maternal health. OBJECTI

A Vegetable, Oil, and Fruit Dietary Pattern in Late Pregnancy is Linked to Reduced Risks of Adverse Birth Outcomes in a Predominantly Low-Income Hispanic and Latina Pregnancy Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Studies examining diet and its links to birth outcomes among socioeconomically disadvantaged populations in the United States are scarce. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify prenatal dietary patterns, examine their relationships with birth outcomes, and evaluate the variation of these associations by maternal diabetes status [no diabetes, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), preexisting diabetes]. METHODS: Women in the Maternal and Developmental Risks from Environmental and Social Stressors (MADRES) study (n = 465)-an ongoing, prospective pregnancy cohort of predominantly low-income

Vulvovaginal candidiasis in Iran: A systematic review and meta-analysis on the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, demographic characteristics, risk factors, etiologic agents and laboratory diagnosis.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis is a global issue of concern due to its association with economic costs, sexually transmitted infections, and ascending genital tract diseases. This infection affects 75% of women on at least one occasion over a lifetime. The present systematic review and meta-analysis is the first to determine the prevalence of vulvovaginal candidiasis in Iranian women. We searched national (SID, IranDoc, Iranmedex, and Magiran) and international (PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and web of science) databases for studies published between May 2000 until May 2020 reporting the epidemiol

Colorectal cancer risk factors among the population of South-East Siberia: a case-control study.

Colorectal cancer remains one of the most widespread malignancies in the world. However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies considering colorectal cancer risk factors among Russian populations, particularly in Siberia. The aim of this investigation was to determine the impact of various lifestyle, dietary, family, and socioeconomical factors on colorectal cancer risk in South-East Siberia. We recruited 185 Russian colorectal cancer cases and 210 gender-, age-, and ethnicity-matched asymptomatic controls with no history of any malignant tumor, using a specially designed questionnaire to o

The Effect of Whey on Performance, Gut Health and Bone Morphology Parameters in Broiler Chicks.

Whey is a highly nutritious byproduct of the cheese industry that can be used effectively in the animal feed industry. However, the use of whey in poultry diets is limited by its high lactose and mineral contents. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of whey in poultry diets on the performance, intestinal microbiota and physico-chemical parameters of the intestinal ecosystem, as well as on the bone morphology and its strength in broiler chicks. One hundred and twenty-eight, day-old, male broiler chicks were randomly allocated into four treat

Risk-based assessment and criteria specification of the microbial safety of wastewater reuse in food processing: Managing Listeria monocytogenes contamination in pasteurized fluid milk.

Intense pressure on water resources has led to efforts to reuse reclaimed processing wastewater for cleaning purposes in food processing plants. The milk industry produces considerable amounts of wastewater, which can be used for cleaning of equipment after appropriate treatment. However, due to naturally occurring microbiological contamination in raw milk, the wastewater is often contaminated, and therefore the reuse of reclaimed wastewater is perceived as risky. This study aims to quantify the risks of Listeria monocytogenes infection and associated disease burden when wastewater reclaimed f

Ethnophytotherapeutical research in the high Molise region (Central-Southern Italy).

BACKGROUND: In the years 2003-2005 research was carried out concerning ethno-medicine in the high Molise (central- southern Italy), a region that has been the object of very little investigation from the ethnobotanical point of view. Upper Molise is a continuation of the mountain profiles of the Abruzzi Appenines: a series of hills, steep slopes and deep fluvial valleys making communications difficult. Primordial traditions (e.g. harvest feasts) are typical of the region. METHODS: Field data were collected through open interviews in the field. These were conducted on both an individual and gr

Vitamin D Deficiency Mediates the Link Between Dietary Patterns, Inflammatory Biomarkers, and Iron Status Indicators (Ferritin and Hemoglobin) in Metabolic Syndrome.

Background/Objectives: Chronic low-grade inflammation and nutritional deficiencies, particularly vitamin D deficiency, have emerged as important contributors to Metabolic syndrome (MetS) pathogenesis but remain underexplored. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the associations between dietary intake, vitamin D status, and inflammatory biomarkers (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein -CRP- and ferritin) in patients with MetS. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 141 adult MetS patients at a Mexican hospital. Clinical, anthropometric, dietary (using a validate

Do Children Who Were Preschool Picky Eaters Eat Different Foods at School Lunch When Aged 13 Years Than Their Non-Picky Peers?

BACKGROUND: Picky eating behaviour is characterised by an unwillingness to eat familiar foods, try new foods, and/or strong food preferences. Prevalence peaks at about 3 years of age and usually declines during school years but behavioural characteristics may persist. Parental pressure may influence this. Our aim was to assess food choices in a school setting, away from the family environment, of 13-year-old children who were preschool picky eaters compared with those who were never picky eaters. METHODS: Children were recruited at birth in south-west England and followed to age 13 years. Chi

Inflammatory Cytokine Responses to 6 Wks of Increased Dairy Intake in Individuals with Overweight and Obesity-A Randomized Crossover Trial.

BACKGROUND: Dairy products are important sources of macro/micronutrients and contain bioactive components with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and musculoskeletal supporting properties. Few studies have assessed the short-term effect of consuming a variety of wholefood dairy products (as opposed to single foods/nutrients) on a range of interrelated inflammatory, metabolic, antioxidant and vascular outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To compare these physiological outcomes after 6 wks of a high mixed-dairy diet compared with 6 wks of a low dairy diet. METHODS: Using a randomly assigned crossover design, 30

Diet affects inflammatory arthritis: a Mendelian randomization study of 30 dietary patterns causally associated with inflammatory arthritis.

BACKGROUND: The causal associations between dietary intake and the risk and severity of Inflammatory Arthritis (IA) are currently unknown. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to investigate the causal relationship between nine dietary categories (30 types of diet) and IA using Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS: We analyzed data from 30 diets and IA in a genome-wide association study (GWAS). Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that could influence the results of MR analyses were screened out through the Mendelian Randomization Pleiotropy RESidual Sum and Outlier (MR-PRESSO) test. Screws or Sutures? A Pediatric Cadaveric Study of Tibial Spine Fracture Repairs.

BACKGROUND: Tibial spine fractures are common in the pediatric population because of the biomechanical properties of children's subchondral epiphyseal bone. Most studies in porcine or adult human bone suggest that suture fixation performs better than screw fixation, but these tissues may be poor surrogates for pediatric bone. No previous study has evaluated fixation methods in human pediatric knees. PURPOSE: To quantify the biomechanical properties of 2-screw and 2-suture repair of tibial spine fracture in human pediatric knees. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Cadaveric
