The toll of the cyclone: mental health impacts of tropical cyclones in coastal communities of India.

With extreme weather events growing in severity and frequency, interventions aimed at preventing associated health disorders in coastal communities have become salient. Coastal communities are expected to develop coping mechanisms to climate change related stressors. However, these frontline communities may need special assistance to effectively adapt to unprecedented climatic disasters. Existing infrastructure and policy support systems may be inadequate, resulting in residual vulnerabilities that require attention. We examine whether tropical cyclones inflict adverse mental health impacts on

Strengthening and utilizing response groups for emergencies flagship: a narrative review of the roll out process and lessons from the first year of implementation.

The World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa (WHO/AFRO) faces members who encounter annual disease epidemics and natural disasters that necessitate immediate deployment and a trained health workforce to respond. The gaps in this regard, further exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, led to conceptualizing the Strengthening and Utilizing Response Group for Emergencies (SURGE) flagship in 2021. This study aimed to present the experience of the WHO/AFRO in the stepwise roll-out process and the outcome, as well as to elucidate the lessons learned across the pilot countries throughout the fi

Decommissioning and recommissioning a regional hospital in response to a COVID-19 outbreak.

CONTEXT: The COVID-19 outbreak at the North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) site in Tasmania, Australia in April 2020 was both rapid and tragic. Within 10 days of identification of the first healthcare worker infection, both hospitals had closed, and all patients were discharged or decanted to other facilities within the state. The entire hospital staff (approximately 1300 people) and their households (approximately 3000-4000 people) were furloughed for 14 days to halt the spread of infection. During the furlough period, a decommissioning, terminal clean and recommissioning process was undertake

Clinical and demographic profile of admitted victims in a tertiary hospital after the 2015 earthquake in Nepal.

BACKGROUND: In 2015, an earthquake killing 9,000 and injuring 22,000 people hit Nepal. The Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), a reference tertiary hospital, was operational immediately after the earthquake. We studied the profile of earthquake victims admitted in TUTH and assessed what factors could influence hospital length of stay. METHODS: An earthquake victim dataset was created based on patient records, with information on sex, age, date of admission and discharge, diagnosis, and surgical intervention. We performed an initial descriptive overview of the earthquake victims fol

Tenth Warren K. Sinclair keynote address-the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident and comprehensive health risk management.

Just two years have passed since the Tokyo Electric Power Company-Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) accident, a multidimensional disaster that combined to destroy the local infrastructure on which the safety system depended and gave a serious impact to the world. Countermeasures including evacuation, sheltering, and control of the food chain were implemented in a timely manner by the Japanese government. However, there is a clear need for improvement, especially in the areas of nuclear safety and protection and also in the management of the radiation health risk during and even after

Trust influences response to public health messages during a bioterrorist event.

This study builds on recent work describing African Americans' low trust in public health regarding terrorism preparedness by identifying the specific components of trust (fiduciary responsibility, honesty, competency, consistency, faith) that may influence community response to a bioterrorist attack. We used qualitative analysis of data from 75 African American adults living in Los Angeles County who participated in focus group discussions. Groups were stratified by socioeconomic status (SES; up to vs. above 200% of federal poverty guidelines) and age (18-39 years old vs. 40-65 years old). Di

Simulation and virtual reality in medical education and therapy: a protocol.

Continuing medical education has historically been provided primarily by didactic lectures, though adult learners prefer experiential or self-directed learning. Young physicians have extensive experience with computer-based or "video" games, priming them for medical education--and treating their patients--via new technologies. We report our use of standardized patients (SPs) to educate physicians on the diagnosis and treatment of biological and chemical warfare agent exposure. We trained professional actors to serve as SPs representing exposure to biological agents such as anthrax and smallpox

[Effectiveness of the contingency plan of the internal inflammatory disease unit before Covid-19 infection.].

OBJECTIVE: Decision making in hospitals, and especially in their own healthcare services, is hardly referenced in the literature. During the pandemic period, healthcare services have put in place contingency plans to minimize the consequences of the coronavirus on professionals and patients. However, the deployment of contingency plans and results are hardly shared, depriving other services of references to refute, compare or emulate the aforementioned plans. The objective of this work was the description of the implementation and evaluation of Contingency Plans in the Covid-19 pandemic in a u

Ebola Virus Disease: essential public health principles for clinicians.

Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) has become a public health emergency of international concern. The World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have developed guidance to educate and inform healthcare workers and travelers worldwide. Symptoms of EVD include abrupt onset of fever, myalgias, and headache in the early phase, followed by vomiting, diarrhea and possible progression to hemorrhagic rash, life-threatening bleeding, and multi-organ failure in the later phase. The disease is not transmitted via airborne spread like influenza, but rather from person-to-person, or an

Zoonoses likely to be used in bioterrorism.

Bioterrorism is the deliberate release of viruses, bacteria, or other agents used "to cause illness or death in people, animals, or plants. Only modest microbiologic skills are needed to produce and effectively use biologic weapons. And biological warfare has afflicted campaigns throughout military history, at times playing an important role in determining their outcomes. There is a long list of potential pathogens for use by terrorists, but only a few are easy to prepare and disperse. Of the infectious diseases, the vast majority are zoonoses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's

Terrorism preparedness: have office-based physicians been trained?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Terrorism may have a severe impact on physicians' practices. We examined terrorism preparedness training of office-based physicians. METHODS: The National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey uses a nationally representative multi-stage sampling design. In 2003 and 2004, physicians were asked if they had received training in six Category-A viral and bacterial diseases and chemical and radiological exposures. Differences were examined by age, degree, specialty, region, urbanicity, and managed care involvement. Chi-squares, t tests, and logistic regressions were performed i

Impacts of climate change on mental health and its underlying mechanisms: an umberella review.

BACKGROUND: Climate change represents a major global health challenge with potential implications for mental health. Exposure to climate-related stressors is associated with an elevated risk of psychiatric disorders, including trauma- and stressor-related disorders (e.g., PTSD), depressive disorders, and anxiety disorders. Vulnerable populations-including children, women, older adults, individuals with pre-existing mental health conditions, and communities in low-income or disaster-prone regions-may be disproportionately affected. This umbrella review synthesizes current evidence on the mental

A flexible framework for local-level estimation of the effective reproductive number in geographic regions with sparse data.

BACKGROUND: Our research focuses on local-level estimation of the effective reproductive number, which describes the transmissibility of an infectious disease and represents the average number of individuals one infectious person infects at a given time. The ability to accurately estimate the infectious disease reproductive number in geographically granular regions is critical for disaster planning and resource allocation. However, not all regions have sufficient infectious disease outcome data; this lack of data presents a significant challenge for accurate estimation. METHODS: To overcome t

Climate variability and warming in Coastal Odisha: assessing interannual temperature trends and impacts.

Coastal Odisha, strategically positioned between the Bay of Bengal and a vast inland landmass, is highly susceptible to climate change and variability impacts. This study comprehensively examines interannual temperature variability and its relationship with mean seasonal temperature using 54 years of homogenised surface meteorological data (1969-2022) from seven WMO-standard meteorological stations. To assess inter-annual variability in association with mean seasonal temperature and precipitation, a difference of standard deviations (SD) of two periods (e.g. 1969-1996 and 1995-2022) along with

Qualitative evidence syntheses of attitudes and preferences to inform guidelines on infant feeding in the context of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) transmission risk.

BACKGROUND: Breast-feeding holds considerable potential to reduce infant mortality. Feeding choices, already complex, take on additional complexity against a backdrop of the risk of transmissible Ebola Virus. This review describes the factors that influence infant feeding and attitudes of pregnant women, mothers, family members and health practitioners, policy makers and providers (midwives) concerning infant feeding when there is a risk of Mother-to-Child (MTC) transmission of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). Lightweight Deep Neural Network Method for Water Body Extraction from High-Resolution Remote Sensing Images with Multisensors.

Rapid and accurate extraction of water bodies from high-spatial-resolution remote sensing images is of great value for water resource management, water quality monitoring and natural disaster emergency response. For traditional water body extraction methods, it is difficult to select image texture and features, the shadows of buildings and other ground objects are in the same spectrum as water bodies, the existing deep convolutional neural network is difficult to train, the consumption of computing resources is large, and the methods cannot meet real-time requirements. In this paper, a water b
