A high-density genetic map for anchoring genome sequences and identifying QTLs associated with dwarf vine in pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima Duch.).

BACKGROUND: Pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima Duch.) is an economically important crop belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family. However, very few genomic and genetic resources are available for this species. As part of our ongoing efforts to sequence the pumpkin genome, high-density genetic map is essential for anchoring and orienting the assembled scaffolds. In addition, a saturated genetic map can facilitate quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping. RESULTS: A set of 186 F2 plants derived from the cross of pumpkin inbred lines Rimu and SQ026 were genotyped using the genotyping-by-sequencing approach. U

Reproductive and offspring developmental effects following maternal inhalation exposure to methanol in nonhuman primates.

INTRODUCTION: In an effort to improve air quality and decrease dependence on petroleum, the federal government, industry, and other groups have encouraged development of alternative fuels such as methanol to substitute for gasoline or diesel fuel. Methanol is also a candidate to provide the hydrogen for fuel cells, which are being developed for a variety of power sources (including motor vehicle engines). Before people are exposed to increased concentrations of methanol, the potential health effects of such exposures require study. Methanol, a simple alcohol containing one carbon atom, occurs

Integrated transcriptomic and biochemical analyses reveal mechanisms of drought adaptation in strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa L.).

Drought is a major abiotic stress that limits strawberry productivity worldwide, yet the underlying physiological and molecular mechanisms of cultivar-specific tolerance remains poorly understood. This study integrated physiological, biochemical, and transcriptomic analyses to dissect drought responses of two contrasting cultivars of Fragaria × ananassa: drought-tolerant 'Kara' and drought-sensitive 'E22'. Plants were exposed to both progressive water-deficit (Def) and PEG-induced osmotic stress under controlled greenhouse conditions. Physiologically, the two cultivars diverged substantially:

Bioaccumulation and Depletion of the Antibiotic Sulfadiazine 14C in Lambari (Astyanax bimaculatus).

Antibiotics are present in the environment, primarily due to their release through wastewater treatment plants, agricultural practices, and improper disposal of unused medications. In the environment, these drugs can be bioaccumulated by organisms and transferred along the food chain. This is a problem when considering the consumption of fish meat. In the United States, legislation stipulates that the maximum residue limit for sulfadiazine (SDZ) should not exceed 100 μg kg-1. Lambari fishes have potential economic importance in aquaculture, as they are relatively easy to breed and can be raise

Identification and characterization of PsFwC9 conferring Fusarium wilt resistance in pea.

Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is one of the most important edible legumes in China, with both planting area and total yield ranking among the highest in the world. Fusarium wilt, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. pisi (Fop), is a severe factor limiting pea production. The deployment of resistant pea cultivars is the most effective and sustainable strategy for controlling this disease. In the present study, a novel resistance gene PsFwC9, conferring resistance to Fop race 5, was identified in the resistant pure line Chengwan 9-8 (CW9-8), and its candidate gene Psat4g213640 was characterized and func

Efficiency of Thyme and Oregano Essential Oils in Counteracting the Hazardous Effects of Malathion in Rats.

The widespread use of MLT may pose numerous hazards to animal breeding, health, and resilience due to the presence of MLT residues in animal feedstuffs, pastures, hay, and cereals. Many medicinal plants provide what is called a generalized anti-toxic remedy. The current study examined hazardous biochemical and histological reactions to MLT and the efficiency of ThEO and OEO essential oils as anti-toxic therapies to return to a natural state after MLT exposure. A total of 75 male albino rats were randomly assigned to two groups: (i) C - MLT, comprising 25 rats, served as the control group; and

Climate changes, environment and infection: facts, scenarios and growing awareness from the public health community within Europe.

Climate change is a current global concern and, despite continuing controversy about the extent and importance of causes and of its effects, it seems likely that it will affect the incidence and prevalence of both residual and imported infections in Europe. Climate affects mainly the range of infectious diseases, whereas weather affects the timing and intensity of outbreaks. Climate change scenarios include a change distribution of infectious diseases with warming and changes in outbreaks associated with weather extremes. The largest health impact from climate change for Europe doesn't come fr

Mitigation of enteric methane production by ruminants: strategies relevant to New Zealand's pasture-based agricultural systems.

The Paris Agreement requires New Zealand to reduce its overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As a consequence, there is increased interest in reducing enteric methane (CH4), a major emission source from ruminants such as cattle and sheep. Reducing CH4 is crucial not only for climate commitments but also to meet sustainability demands from global buyers of NZ's agricultural exports. This review summarises current and future technologies for CH4 mitigation, focusing specifically on their applicability to pastoral grazing systems.Enteric CH4 is a natural microbial by-product of feed fermentatio

Whole-genome analysis reveals the tandem duplication of Cannabis sativa L. GATA and their stress-responsive expression during seed germination.

BACKGROUND: GATA transcription factors (TFs) are zinc finger proteins that regulate diverse developmental and stress-responsive processes in plants. Despite the growing economic importance of Cannabis sativa L. (hemp) as a source of fiber, seed oil, and bioactive compounds, the GATA TF gene family has not been systematically characterized in this species. This study aimed to perform a comprehensive genome-wide identification and characterization of GATA TF genes in C. sativa L. and to investigate their expression responses during early seed germination under abiotic stress conditions. Impact of Alien Chromosome Introgression from Thinopyrum ponticum on Wheat Grain Traits.

Structural variation (SV) serves as a fundamental driver of phenotypic diversity and environmental adaptation in plants and animals, significantly influencing key agronomic traits in crops. Common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), an allohexaploid species, harbors extensive chromosomal SVs and distant hybridization-induced recombination events that provide critical resources for genetic improvement. This study utilizes non-denaturing fluorescence in situ hybridization (ND-FISH) and oligonucleotide multiplex probe-based FISH (ONPM-FISH) to analyze the karyotypes of 153 BC1F4-BC1F6 lines derived fro

Investigation of the immunomodulatory effects and molecular mechanisms of cichoric acid on cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppression in mice.

Immunosuppressive diseases (ISD) are relatively common in veterinary clinical practice. The lack of therapeutic drugs for ISD severely impacts the healthy breeding of livestock and poultry. Cichoric Acid (CA), a natural active ingredient derived from traditional medicinal plants, has demonstrated a notable immunoenhancing effect. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms by which CA attenuates cyclophosphamide (CTX)-mediated immunosuppressive effects in mice have not yet been fully elucidated. In vivo, CA demonstrated a significant increase in body weight of CTX-induced immunosuppressed mice, el

Influence of pollen feeding and physiological condition on pesticide sensitivity of the honey bee Apis mellifera carnica.

In two consecutive years heavy bee mortality at end April/early May followed the use of pesticides classed as harmless for bees along road verges. It was thought that old weak winter bees had succumbed to a preparation otherwise innocuous. Extensive tests to reveal any links between the bees' physiological condition and pesticide sensitivity involved 6 hormone herbicides, 11 fungicides and 2 insecticides, all approved harmless for bees and functioning on them wholly or mainly as stomach poisons. As a rule bee sensitivity was measured as LD 50 per os, in smaller tests as percentage mortality. A

Mosquito aquatic habitat modification and manipulation interventions to control malaria.

BACKGROUND: Larval source management (LSM) may help reduce Plasmodium parasite transmission in malaria-endemic areas. LSM approaches include habitat modification (permanently or temporarily reducing mosquito breeding aquatic habitats); habitat manipulation (temporary or recurrent change to environment); or use of chemical (e.g. larviciding) or biological agents (e.g. natural predators) to breeding sites. We examined the effectiveness of habitat modification or manipulation (or both), with and without larviciding. This is an update of a review published in 2013. OBJECTIVES: 1. To describe and

Seasonal content of heavy metals in the "soil-feed-milk-manure" system in horse husbandry in Kazakhstan.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The quality of food, especially animal-based food, is crucial for human health. However, the quality of milk and other animal products has become an acute cause for concern in Kazakhstan. Technogenic dispersion of heavy metals (HMs) causes adverse effects on living organisms and creates unfavorable conditions for the existence of humans, animals, and plants. The purpose of this study was to analyze the content of several HMs in samples of soil, horse feed (hay, mixed feed, and bran), mare's milk, and manure to assess bioaccumulation and possible adverse effects on the bodie
